Abstract: Aviation sector discharges approximately 2% of the global anthropogenic CO2, and the proportion is growing. The search for cost-effective and environmental-friendly bio-jet fuels derived from natural resources is gaining momentum. The microalgae cultivation conditions including temperature, pH, light intensity and nutrients have shown significant influence on the microalgae growth rate and chemical composition, which create the opportunities to enhance the yield and quality of microalgae bio-jet fuel. This review is focused on the hydroprocessing method for converting microalgae oil into bio-jet fuel, as well as the novel conceptual approaches for bio-jet fuel production such as gasification with Fischer-Tropsch and sugar-to-jet. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of biomass is one of the best alternative ways to replace natural aviation fuel due to the high maximum energy efficiency and low emission of greenhouse gas. In addition, hydroprocessing with the aid of Ni and zeolites catalysts has successfully converted the microalgae biodiesel to bio-jet fuel with high yield and alkane selectivity. Among these techniques, hydroprocessing used the lowest production cost with the longest duration, whereas the bio-jet fuel with high selectivity (C8–C16) could be produced by using gasification with the Fischer-Tropsch process. Consequently, gasification and Fischer-Tropsch and sugar-to-jet can become the future alternative process to convert microalgae to bio-jet fuel. The development of microalgae bio-jet fuel will increase the security of energy supply and reduce the fuel expenses in aviation industry.

Abstract: Thin-wall tubes made of zirconia stabilized by 8 mol% of yttria and of ceria doped by 10 mol% of gadolinia were prepared by thermoplastic extrusion. The rheological behaviour of the ceramic mixtures prepared and the effect of rheological properties on the deformation of tubes were studied. After sintering, the diameter of tubes was 10.5 mm and their wall thickness ranged from 270 to 420 μm. The deformation and shape irregularity of sintered tubes were determined. The tubes, which were sintered at a temperature of 1500 °C, had a relative density of more than 98% t.d. Flexural strength and fracture toughness of sintered ceramics were determined on test bars prepared by injection moulding from thermoplastic mixtures identical to those used for extrusion. The fracture toughness established was 1.7 MPa m 0.5 for yttria-stabilized zirconia, and 1.1 MPa m 0.5 for gadolinia-doped ceria.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to introduce and characterize, both experimentally and numerically, three classes of non-traditional 3D infill patterns at three scales as an alternative to classical 2D infill patterns in the context of additive manufacturing and structural applications. The investigated 3D infill patterns are biologically inspired and include Gyroid, Schwarz D and Schwarz P. Their selection was based on their beneficial mechanical properties, such as double curvature. They are not only known from nature but also emerge from numerical topology optimization. A classical 2D hexagonal pattern has been used as a reference. The mechanical performance of 14 cylindrical specimens in compression is quantitatively related to stiffness, peak load and weight. Digital image correlation provides accurate full-field deformation measurements and insights into periodic features of the surface strain field. The associated variability, which is inherent to the production and testing process, has been evaluated for 3 identical Gyroid specimens. The nonlinear material model for the preliminary FEM analysis is based on tensile test specimens with 3 different slicing strategies. The 3D infill patterns are generally useful when the extrusion orientation cannot be aligned with the build orientation and the principal stress field, i.e., in case of generative design, such as the presented branching structure, or any complex shape and boundary condition.

Abstract: This paper evaluates the performance of face and speaker verification techniques in the context of a mobile environment. The mobile environment was chosen as it provides a realistic and challenging test-bed for biometric person verification techniques to operate. For instance the audio environment is quite noisy and there is limited control over the illumination conditions and the pose of the subject for the video. To conduct this evaluation, a part of a database captured during the "Mobile Biometry" (MOBIO) European Project was used. In total there were nine participants to the evaluation who submitted a face verification system and five participants who submitted speaker verification systems. The results have shown that the best performing face and speaker verification systems obtained the same level of performance, respectively 10.9% and 10.6% of HTER.
