Abstract: The Kolmogorov entropy is an important measure which describes the degree of chaoticity of systems. It gives the average rate of information loss about a position of the phase point on the attractor. Numerically, the Kolmogorov entropy can be estimated as the Renyi entropy. A special case of Renyi entropy is the information theory of Shannon entropy. The product of Shannon entropy and Boltzmann constant is the thermodynamic entropy. Fractal structures are characterized by their fractal dimension. There exists an infinite family of fractal dimensions. A generalized fractal dimension can be defined in an E-dimensional space. The Renyi entropy and generalized fractal dimension are connected by a straight relation.

Abstract: Inhabitants of the Indonesian island of Sumatra are faced with the problem of insufficient food supplies and the consequent risk of undernourishment and health issues. Edible insects as a traditional and readily available food source could be part of the solution. The nutritional value of insects depends on many factors, e.g., species, developmental stage, sex, diet, and climatic conditions. However, edible insects bred in Sumatra for human consumption have never before been assessed with regard to their nutritional value. Our study involved analyses of crude protein, chitin, fat and selected fatty acid contents of giant mealworm larvae (Zophobas morio), larvae of the common mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) and nymphs of the field cricket (Gryllus assimilis). Crude protein content in the samples ranged from 46% to 56%. Highest (35%) and lowest (31%) amounts of fat were recorded in giant mealworm larvae and larvae of the common mealworm, respectively. Chitin amounts ranged from 6% to 13%. Based on these values, which are comparable to those known from other food insects reared in different regions of the world, the edible species bred in Sumatra could become food sources with a potential to help stave off hunger and undernourishment.

Abstract: In this paper, we describe the “Spoken Web Search” Task, which was held as part of the 2011 MediaEval benchmark campaign. The purpose of this task was to perform audio search with audio input in four languages, with very few resources being available in each language. The data was taken from “spoken web” material collected over mobile phone connections by IBM India. We present results from several independent systems, developed by five teams and using different approaches, compare them, and provide analysis and directions for future research.

Abstract: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polyesters accumulated by numerous prokaryotes in the form of intracellular granules, have been for decades considered being predominantly storage molecules. However, numerous recent discoveries revealed and emphasized their complex biological role for microbial cells. Most of all, it was repeatedly reported and confirmed that the presence of PHA granules in prokaryotic cells enhances stress resistance and robustness of microbes against various environmental stress factors such as high or low temperature, freezing, oxidative, and osmotic pressure. It seems that protective mechanisms of PHA granules are associated with their extraordinary architecture and biophysical properties as well as with the complex and deeply interconnected nature of PHA metabolism. Therefore, this review aims at describing novel and unexpected properties of PHA granules with respect to their contribution to stress tolerance of various prokaryotes including common mesophilic heterotrophic bacteria, but also extremophiles or photo-autotrophic cyanobacteria. • PHA granules present in bacterial cells reveal unique properties and functions. • PHA enhances stress robustness of bacterial cells.
