TL;DR: Semisolid metal (SSM) processing is a relatively new technology for metal forming as discussed by the authors, which deals with semisolid slurries, in which non-dendritic solid particles are dispersed in a liquid matrix.
Abstract: Semisolid metal (SSM) processingis a relatively new technology for metal forming. Different from the conventional metal forming technologies which use either solid metals (solid state processing) or liquid metals (casting) as starting materials, SSM processing deals with semisolid slurries, in which non-dendritic solid particles are dispersed in a liquid matrix. Semisolid metal slurries exhibit distinctive rheological characteristics: the steady state behaviour is pseudoplastic (or shear thinning), while the transient state behaviour is thixotropic. All the currently available technologies for SSM processing have been developed based on those unique rheological properties, which in turn originate from their non-dendritic microstructures. Year 2001 marks the 30th anniversary of the concept of SSM processing. Today, SSM processing has established itself as a scientifically sound and commercially viable technology for production of metallic components with high integrity, improved mechanical properti...

TL;DR: If experimental glycation is an adequate model of tissue damage occurring in diabetes mellitus, then these studies indicate a therapeutic role for antioxidants.
Abstract: Protein exposed to glucose is cleaved, undergoes conformational change and develops fluorescent adducts (‘glycofluorophores’). These changes are presumed to result from the covalent attachment of glucose to amino groups. We have demonstrated, however, that the fragmentation and conformational changes observed are dependent upon hydroxyl radicals produced by glucose autoxidation, or some closely related process, and that antioxidants dissociate structural damage caused by the exposure of glucose to protein from the incorporation of monosaccharide into protein. We have also provided further evidence that glycofluorophore formation is dependent upon metal-catalysed oxidative processes associated with ketoaldehyde formation. If experimental glycation is an adequate model of tissue damage occurring in diabetes mellitus, then these studies indicate a therapeutic role for antioxidants.

TL;DR: The genetic mechanisms underpinning oocyte and embryo growth and development are a priority for research and the products synthesized in ovoand the mechanisms controlling their expression are likely to play a central role in determining egg quality.
Abstract: Factors affecting egg quality are determined by the intrinsic properties of the egg itself and the environment in which the egg is fertilized and subsequently incubated. Egg quality in fish is very variable. Some of the factors affecting egg quality in fish are known, but many (probably most) are unknown. Components that do affect egg quality include the endocrine status of the female during the growth of the oocyte in the ovary, the diet of the broodfish, the complement of nutrients deposited into the oocyte, and the physiochemical conditions of the water in which the eggs are subsequently incubated. In captive broodfish, the husbandry practices to which fish are subjected are probably a major contributory factor affecting egg quality. Our knowledge of the genetic influences on egg quality is very limited indeed. We know that parental genes strongly influence both fecundity and egg quality, but almost nothing is known about gene expression and/or mRNA translation in fish oocytes/embryos. This is surprising because the products synthesized in ovoand the mechanisms controlling their expression are likely to play a central role in determining egg quality. The genetic mechanisms underpinning oocyte and embryo growth and development are a priority for research

TL;DR: BABAR as discussed by the authors is a detector for the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric e+e-B Factory operating at the upsilon 4S resonance, which allows comprehensive studies of CP-violation in B-meson decays.
Abstract: BABAR, the detector for the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric e+e- B Factory operating at the upsilon 4S resonance, was designed to allow comprehensive studies of CP-violation in B-meson decays. Charged particle tracks are measured in a multi-layer silicon vertex tracker surrounded by a cylindrical wire drift chamber. Electromagentic showers from electrons and photons are detected in an array of CsI crystals located just inside the solenoidal coil of a superconducting magnet. Muons and neutral hadrons are identified by arrays of resistive plate chambers inserted into gaps in the steel flux return of the magnet. Charged hadrons are identified by dE/dx measurements in the tracking detectors and in a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector surrounding the drift chamber. The trigger, data acquisition and data-monitoring systems, VME- and network-based, are controlled by custom-designed online software. Details of the layout and performance of the detector components and their associated electronics and software are presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported results from searches for the standard model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at square root(s) = 7 TeV in five decay modes: gamma pair, b-quark pair, tau lepton pair, W pair, and Z pair.
Abstract: Combined results are reported from searches for the standard model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV in five Higgs boson decay modes: gamma pair, b-quark pair, tau lepton pair, W pair, and Z pair. The explored Higgs boson mass range is 110-600 GeV. The analysed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6-4.8 inverse femtobarns. The expected excluded mass range in the absence of the standard model Higgs boson is 118-543 GeV at 95% CL. The observed results exclude the standard model Higgs boson in the mass range 127-600 GeV at 95% CL, and in the mass range 129-525 GeV at 99% CL. An excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed at the low end of the explored mass range making the observed limits weaker than expected in the absence of a signal. The largest excess, with a local significance of 3.1 sigma, is observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV. The global significance of observing an excess with a local significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-600 (110-145) GeV is estimated to be 1.5 sigma (2.1 sigma). More data are required to ascertain the origin of this excess.
