TL;DR: This article argued that the standard Western concept of "history" is culturally particular and not necessarily the best tool for cross-cultural investigations and pointed out that the past, present and future are mutually implicated.
Abstract: This article seeks to clarify the concept of “historicity” and how it might guide ethnographic research. The argument is developed with particular reference to the eight studies of historicity in diverse societies ranging from the Pacific to North America contained in this special issue. The authors contend that the standard Western concept of “history” is culturally particular and not necessarily the best tool for cross‐cultural investigations. Western history is generally predicated on the principle of historicism: the idea that the “past” is separated from the present. People around the world, including Western historians, recognize, however, that the past, present and future are mutually implicated. The notion of “historicity” is intended to open out the temporal focus to a “past‐present‐future”. Studies of historicity address the diverse modes through which people form their presents in world societies.

TL;DR: This paper investigates the benefits of a systematic and interdisciplinary approach to research in knowledge management, particularly in investigating technical (hard), organizational (soft), as well as philosophical (abstract) aspects of the concept.
Abstract: Companies are often unaware of the potential value of corporate information and extent of data held in their systems. It is increasingly argued that analysis of such data and information can be transformed into knowledge that in turn can be used to gain business benefits such as a competitive advantage, minimization of costs, improved quality, responsiveness, or improved service to customers. This paper investigates the benefits of a systematic and interdisciplinary approach to research in knowledge management, particularly in investigating technical (hard), organizational (soft), as well as philosophical (abstract) aspects of the concept. It describes in detail the framework used in research undertaken by the Centre for Knowledge and Business Process Management at Brunel University. We argue that this framework is useful to researchers and practitioners alike as it contributes to a systematic and more effective knowledge management approach.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined global and regional spillovers in local emerging stock markets and found that spillovers from regional and global markets are present in the vast majority of emerging market economies.
Abstract: This paper examines global (mature market) and regional (emerging market) spillovers in local emerging stock markets. Tri-variate VAR GARCH(1,1)-in-mean models are estimated for 41 emerging market economies (EMEs) in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. The models capture a range of possible transmission channels: Spillovers in mean returns, volatility, and cross-market GARCH-in-mean effects. Hypotheses about the importance of different channels are tested. The results suggest that spillovers from regional and global markets are present in the vast majority of EMEs. However, the nature of crossmarket linkages varies across countries and regions. While spillovers in mean returns dominate in emerging Asia and Latin America, spillovers in variance appear to play a key role in emerging Europe. There is also some evidence of cross-market GARCH-in-mean effects. The relative importance of regional and global spillovers varies too, with global spillovers dominating in Asia, and regional spillovers in Latin America and the Middle East.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on diesel engine combustion and exhaust emissions were identified and investigated experimentally: the reduction in oxygen supply to the engine, participation in the combustion process of carbon dioxide and water vapour present in the EGR, increase in the specific heat capacity of the engine inlet charge, increased INLET charge temperature and reduction in the inLET charge mass flowrate arising from the use of hot EGR.
Abstract: An investigation was conducted with the aim of identifying and quantifying the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on diesel engine combustion and exhaust emissions. Five effects of EGR were identified and investigated experimentally: the reduction in oxygen supply to the engine, participation in the combustion process of carbon dioxide and water vapour present in the EGR, increase in the specific heat capacity of the engine inlet charge, increased inlet charge temperature and reduction in the inlet charge mass flowrate arising from the use of hot EGR. The experimental methodology developed allowed each one of these effects to be investigated and quantified separately. The investigation was carried out on a high-speed, direct injection diesel engine, running at an intermediate speed and load. A limited number of tests were also conducted in an optically accessible diesel engine, which established the effects of EGR on local flame temperature. Finally, tests were conducted with simulated EGR...
