Abstract: A meta-analysis is conducted on a set of empirical studies of information visualization. To be included in the meta-analysis, a study must meet a set of selection criteria. The meta-analysis synthesizes significant levels and effect sizes, tests the heterogeneity of findings from individual studies included and tests the linear trends over a range of information visualization features with ascending visual-spatial complexity. Recommendations for future experimental studies of information visualizations are included.

Abstract: Cultural differences in three aspects of "probabilistic thinking" were studied. The study re-presents part of earlier work in Hong Kong and Britain and combines it with the results from a further study in Indonesia and Malaysia. The largest cultural difference was found between Asian and British student groups. The British adopted a more finely differentiated view of uncertainty, both verbally and numerically, than the Asians in response to uncertain situations. These differences are predictable neither on the basis of the relative abundance of probability expressions in the Indonesian language nor by the Malay samples' ability to discriminate English probability words on a meaningful probability discrimination dimension. For numerical probabilities assigned to almanac questions, the British were less extreme and better calibrated than the Asian students. Abstract: The increasing interest in the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of human disease has led to an increased need for techniques to measure free radicals and their reactions in vivo and, most importantly, in the clinical situation. Free radicals are extremely reactive and thus short lived. Consequently, free radicals are not amenable to direct assay and free radical activity is usually assessed by indirect methods such as measurement of the various end products of reactions with lipids, proteins and DNA. A vast array of analytical techniques has been developed to measure these end products though not all of them are applicable to the clinical situation where the only samples normally available are blood, urine and expired breath. Lipid peroxidation is the most intensively studied process and provides a number of possibilities for assays. Protein and nucleic acid oxidation are attracting increasing attention at the present time. The techniques currently available, however, are limited to semi-quantitative assays of damage to broad classes of biomolecules and there is an urgent need for more specific and informative methods.

Abstract: The Approaches to Studying Questionnaire (ASQ) was devised to measure individual differences in terms of four major study orientations. It achieves satisfactory levels of reliability and the distinction between a meaning orientation and a reproducing orientation has been consistently demonstrated across a variety of student groups. However, the validity of the remaining study orientations and of the constituent subscales is open to question. A shorm form of the ASQ is described, based upon the eight subscales that have been consistently identified with meaning orientation and reproducing orientation. The reliability and replicability of this new questionnaire are considered in the light of a critical evaluation of the analytic methods employed in previous research. Satisfactory levels of internal consistency and test-retest reliability are demonstrated, and factor analysis successfully retrieves the two primary study orientations.
