Abstract: This article presents an analysis of the talk of child counsellors in interaction with young children (4-12 years). The data consist of recordings of counselling sessions offered to children whose parents are in the process of separation or divorce. The ostensible aim of the service was to provide normalizing interventions rather than dealing with clinical referrals. The focus of the article is on the practice of what is known in counselling psychology as active listening. This refers to the ways in which counsellors seek to show responsivity to what the child is saying. Based on analysis of naturally occurring child counselling talk, this article shows how the conversational practice of formulation is utilized to achieve some of the complex interactional work involved in active listening.

Abstract: A measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry in inclusive pp to WX production at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV is presented based on data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. This high precision measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry, performed in both the W to e nu and W to mu nu channels, provides new insights into parton distribution functions.

Abstract: This paper is about the broadband development in South Korea (henceforth Korea). Korea is considered to be a world leader in this field. Based on various sources including a study trip to Seoul that took place in July 2002, the reasons for this success are offered in this paper. The purpose of the study trip was to investigate how Korea achieved such a relatively fast penetration rate in a time span of approximately 4 years. Using documentary secondary data such as, written documents published materials, and primary data, such as interviews, the paper explores and presents the factors contributing to this development. The factors covered include government leadership, fierce competition, low prices due to the competition, cultural aspects, and geographic and demographic aspects. Although some strategies and success factors are Korea specific, there are general lessons that can be drawn. Anyone considering the deployment of broadband and other future innovations will benefit from this investigation into the successful strategies undertaken in Korea. Abstract: A statistical combination of several searches for the electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented. All searches use proton-proton collision data at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$. In addition to the combination of previous searches, a targeted analysis requiring three or more charged leptons (electrons or muons) is presented, focusing on the challenging scenario in which the difference in mass between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson. The results are interpreted in simplified models of chargino-neutralino or neutralino pair production. For chargino-neutralino production, in the case when the lightest neutralino is massless, the combination yields an observed (expected) limit at the 95% confidence level on the chargino mass of up to 650 (570) GeV, improving upon the individual analysis limits by up to 40 GeV. If the mass difference between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson in the chargino-neutralino model, the targeted search requiring three or more leptons obtains observed and expected exclusion limits of around 225 GeV on the second neutralino mass and 125 GeV on the lightest neutralino mass, improving the observed limit by about 60 GeV in both masses compared to the previous CMS result. In the neutralino pair production model, the combined observed (expected) exclusion limit on the neutralino mass extends up to 650–750 (550–750) GeV, depending on the branching fraction assumed. This extends the observed exclusion achieved in the individual analyses by up to 200 GeV. The combined result additionally excludes some intermediate gaps in the mass coverage of the individual analyses.

Abstract: . Dynamic models with parameters that are allowed to depend on the state of a hidden Markov chain have become a popular tool for modelling time series subject to changes in regime. An important question that arises in applications involving such models is how to determine the number of states required for the model to be an adequate characterization of the observed data. In this paper, we investigate the properties of alternative procedures that can be used to determine the state dimension of a Markov-switching autoregressive model. These include procedures that exploit the ARMA representation which Markov-switching processes admit, as well as procedures that are based on optimization of complexity-penalized likelihood measures. Our Monte Carlo analysis reveals that such procedures estimate the state dimension correctly, provided that the parameter changes are not too small and the hidden Markov chain is fairly persistent. The use of the various methods is also illustrated by means of empirical examples.
