Abstract: Four labdane-type diterpenic acids and syringaldehyde were isolated and identified from Brazilian propolis. All the compounds exhibit antibacterial activity. The diterpenes, found for the first time in propolis, are typical for some Araucaria species and thus indicate a possible plant source of Brazilian propolis.

Abstract: The antiviral activity of six synthetic substances, esters of substituted cinnamic acids, identical with or analogous to some of the constituents of the Et2O fraction of propolis was studied in vitro. One of them, isopentyl ferulate, inhibited significantly the infectious activity of influenza virus A/Hong Kong (H3N2) in vitro and the production of hemagglutinins in ovo. By the use of diverse experimental patterns, it was found that the maximal inhibition of viral reproduction was observed when test substances were present in the medium during the whole infectious process.

Abstract: The authors propose a software system for pathological voice analysis and screening of laryngeal diseases that has the following properties: a) The analysis is totally noninvasive-the microphone is about 30 cm from the patient's mouth, and contact microphones or laryngophones are not used. b) The system is built around a low-cost personal computer (PC). The additional hardware consists of a standard sound card such as "Sound Blaster" (Creative Technology Inc., Paris, France). The card also includes a microphone. Any other analog-to-digital converter board allowing a sampling rate higher than 16 kHz, with 16 bit resolution (Sound Blaster and OROS have been already tested), and a linear phase condenser or electret microphone can be used to minimize the distortions during capture of the signal. c) The software is graphics-driven and user-friendly, therefore no special training is needed in using the system. d) The system is electrically safe since there is no electrical link between patient and PC.

Abstract: We investigate the polarization properties of holographic gratings in side-chain azobenzene polyesters in which an anisotropic grating that is due to photoinduced linear and circular birefringence is recorded in the volume of the material and a relief grating appears on the surface. A theoretical model is proposed to explain the experimental results, making it possible to understand the influence of the different photoinduced effects. It is shown that at low intensity the polarization properties of the diffraction at these gratings are determined by the interaction of the linear and circular photobirefringences, and at larger intensity the influence of the surface relief dominates the effect of the circular anisotropy. Owing to the high recording efficiency of the polyesters, the ±1-order diffracted waves change the polarization interference pattern during the holographic recording, resulting in the appearance of a surface relief with doubled frequency.
