14 Nov 2001TL;DR: In this article, a method of preparing a dispersion of a fumed metal oxide in a liquid carrier comprising the following sequential steps is presented: (a) providing a liquid container at a pH that effects dissolution of the metal oxide at a rate the same as or greater than the metal dioxide dissolution rate in water at a depth of about 8, mixing with the liquid carrier, in any order, one or more aliquots of both a fuming metal oxide and a metal ion source, such that the dispersion does not coagulate, and optionally adjusting the pH of
Abstract: The invention provides a method of preparing a dispersion of a fumed metal oxide in a liquid carrier comprising the following sequential steps: (a) providing a liquid carrier at a pH that effects dissolution of the metal oxide at a rate the same as or greater than the metal oxide dissolution rate in water at a pH of about 8, (b) mixing with the liquid carrier, in any order, one or more aliquots of both a fumed metal oxide and a metal ion source to form a dispersion, such that the dispersion does not coagulate, and (c) optionally adjusting the pH of the dispersion to the pH of the liquid carrier in step (a). The method allows for the preparation of the dispersion to be done with a high solids loading and at a high pH. Furthermore, the dispersion can have a shelf-life of at least about 1 hour or more at 25° C.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new instrument for measurement of extensional viscosity was designed and employed in the evaluation of SBR compounds containing carbon black and other non-black fillers.
Abstract: A new instrument for measurement of extensional viscosity was designed and employed in the evaluation of SBR compounds containing carbon black and other non-black fillers. It was shown that carbon black filled rubbers generally do not reach steady-state viscosity ; the stress continues to increase with increasing strain up to the point of rupture, due to rapid orientation of molecular chains during extensional flow. The data was evaluated in terms of the Denn-Marrucci equation, and the effect of carbon black on the two adjustable parameters was found. It was found that higher carbon black loading or structure increases only the viscosity coefficient, i.e., it changes the relative level of the flow curve without changing its shape. On the other hand, an increase in surface area increases both the viscosity coefficient and the relaxation time, i.e., it increases the upward curvature of the flow curve. A very good correlation was observed between Mooney viscosity values and calculated viscosity coef...

TL;DR: In this article, a readily flowable carbon black slurry is prepared without the use of surface-active dispersing agents by dispersing carbon black in a predominantly aqueous medium under conditions of high shear in an amount which is sufficient to produce a viscosity of at least 150 centipoises and which is preferably 10-25% by weight of the slurry and subjecting the resultant slurry from (a) to conditions of mild shear.
Abstract: A readily-flowable carbon black slurry is prepared without the use of surface-active dispersing agents by (a) dispersing carbon black in a predominantly aqueous medium under conditions of "high shear" in an amount which is sufficient to produce a viscosity of at least 150 centipoises and which is preferably 10-25% by weight of the slurry and (b) subjecting the resultant slurry from (a) to conditions of "mild shear." "High shear" is defined as that mixing sufficient to produce in a slurry of 7% by weight standard HAF carbon black in water a viscosity of at least 150 centipoises, and "mild shear" as that mixing which is insufficient so to do. The high shear may be provided for example in a quart Waring Blendor operating at 5000 r.p.m., and the mild shear either in the same Blendor at 3000 r.p.m. or less, or in a peristaltic pump which transports the slurry from the high shear mixer. The slurry may also contain 10-60 parts oil per 100 parts carbon black. Rubber masterbatches may be produced by combining the slurry obtained from (b) with latex and coagulating the product.ALSO:Rubber masterbatches are produced by combining with latex a readily-flowable carbon black slurry, prepared without the use of surface-active dispersing agents, and coagulating the product. The slurry may also contain 10-60 parts oil per 100 parts carbon black.
