TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that the internal area arising from pores in an oxidized carbon black does not contribute to performance characteristics in rubber, while the external area is accessible to an elastomer molecule.
Abstract: It is generally accepted that the internal area arising from pores in an oxidized carbon black does not contribute to performance characteristics in rubber. While such pores are available to nitrogen, commonly used in evaluating surface area, they do not appear to be accessible to an elastomer molecule. Thus in predicting performance from area measurements one should consider the external area. Of course, for a non porous black the external and total (BET) area will be identical. In the past, the electron microscope provided the only independent means of evaluating external area. However, with the development of oil furnace blacks, particularly the more recent grades of high structure, identification and measurement of individual particles becomes more difficult and the electron microscope procedure less reliable. However, in recent years the so called “t curve” procedure has come into prominence and appears to provide a useful comparative method for detecting porosity and, to a degree, its exten...

Abstract: Carbon blacks having a CTAB of greater than 155 m2 /g; an I2 No. of greater than 180 mg/g; a N2 SA of greater than 160 m2 /g; a Tint value of greater than 145%; a CDBP of 90-105 cc/100 g; a DBP of 115-140 cc/100 g; a ΔDBP (ΔDBP=DBP-CDBP) of 20-35 cc/100 g; a ΔD50 of less than 40 nm; a Dmode of 40-65 nm; ΔD50/Dmode ratio of 0.55-0.67; and an ASTM Aggregate Volume less than 137,000 (nm)3. Also disclosed are rubber compositions containing the carbon blacks which exhibit superior handling and cornering performance properties, increased abrasion resistance and improved traction.

27 Jul 1994TL;DR: In this article, a consumable electrode is coated with at least a first alloy layer by means which provide for uniform thickness, and sufficient power is applied to the electrode body to induce arcing to cause the starting metal and alloy layers to melt and pool in a crucible.
Abstract: A method for forming a wrought product from a starting metal such as tantalum, niobium, and alloys thereof. A consumable electrode is coated with at least a first alloy layer by means which provide for uniform thickness. Sufficient power is applied to the electrode body to induce arcing to cause the starting metal and alloy layers to melt and pool in a crucible. The uniform layer on the electrode body provides a means for delivering minute quantities of alloy into a larger quantity of starting metal and facilitates a uniform and consistent arc which promotes mixing of the alloy and starting material in the crucible. The electrode body is consumed at an improved rate without an associated decrease in the final ingot yield weight. The pooled metal is allowed to solidify into an ingot. The ingot is then formed into a wrought product.

28 Feb 2011TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a coating comprising fumed silica particles, wherein the fumed particles comprise aggregates of primary particles, where the primary particles have a bimodal or multimodal particle size distribution representing populations of particles having at least a smallest average primary particle size and a largest average primary size.
Abstract: The invention provides a coating comprising fumed silica particles, wherein the fumed silica particles comprise aggregates of primary particles, wherein (a) the primary particles have a bimodal or multimodal particle size distribution representing populations of particles having at least a smallest average primary particle size and a largest average primary particle size, and wherein primary particles having a smaller average primary particle size are attached to primary particles having a larger average primary particle size, or (b) the aggregates have a bi-modal or multi-modal aggregate size distribution, and a carrier. The invention additionally provides a method for preparing a coated article comprising the coating.
