Abstract: Tantalum powder capable of providing a small-sized tantalum electrolytic capacitor while maintaining capacity is described. Tantalum powder in the present invention can be characterized in that the CV value is from 200,000 to 800,000 μFV/g, when measured by the following measuring method. Pellets are produced by forming tantalum powder such that the density is 4.5 g/cm3, then the pellets are chemically converted in a phosphoric acid aqueous solution of concentration 0.1 vol. % at a voltage of 6V and a current of 90 mA/g, and the chemically converted pellets are used as measuring samples to measure the CV value in a sulfuric acid aqueous solution of concentration 30.5 vol. % at a temperature of 25° C. under a frequency of 120 Hz and a voltage of 1.5V.

Abstract: Disclosed are elastomeric compounds including an elastomer and a silicon-treated carbon black, and optionally including a coupling agent. The elastomeric compound exhibits poorer abrasion resistance, lower hysteresis at high temperature and comparable or increased hysteresis at low temperature compared to an elastomer containing an untreated carbon black. A variety of elastomers and formulations employing such elastomers are contemplated and disclosed. Elastomeric compounds incorporating an elastomer and an oxidized, silicon-treated carbon black are also disclosed. Also disclosed is method for preparing elastomers compounded with the treated carbon black.

Abstract: Coatings are often subjected to physical deformations caused by car wash brushes, tree limbs, keys, fingernails, and the like, which may result in mechanical abrasion. The resistance of the coating to scratches imposed by such mechanical abrasions has been studied through the utilization of laboratory tests such as nanoindentors, crockmeters, scanning probe microscopes, and taber abraders. Little emphasis, however, has been placed on the influence of coating attributes on measured scratch resistance. In this study we attempt to relate the effect of coating glass transition temperature, crosslink density, and crosslink type in a series of formulated waterborne polyurethane dispersion clearcoats on resultant scratch resistance. Methods utilized to impart the scratches, e.g., scanning probe microscopy, weighted fingernail, and crockmeter, as well as related coating physical properties measured, e.g., viscoelastic behavior, hardness, and tensile strength, are discussed. The scratch resistance of model coating systems analyzed was found to be dependent upon the base resin Tg, which affected the surface hardness of the coating and the toughness of the crosslinked network, as measured by the method of essential work. Coatings that exhibited both hard surfaces and tough-elastic network integrity afforded the optimized scratch resistance behavior.

Abstract: Stress relaxation in rubber stocks containing various fillers was measured at room temperature, and an empirical equation found for relating decrease in tension, ft, over a period of time from 0.1 sec. to 6 months, namely: where f1.0 is force after 1 min. of relaxation, n is the relaxation rate of material (by definition) and t is time in minutes. Raw rubbers were examined under compression, and cured rubbers were tested under tension. In both cured and raw butadiene rubbers, stress relaxation was found to be a viscous-controlled process. In raw rubbers, reinforcing carbon blacks decrease the rate of relaxation, while in cured rubbers the effect of carbon black is very small. However, in swollen (to VR = 0.25), cured rubbers, the rate of relaxation increases with increasing carbon black loading, indicating a slippage and/or breakage of some carbon black-polymer attachments.
