TL;DR: A highly significant positive correlation was found between the surface-plate, MPN and total cell counts, but the MPN estimations approximated total cellcounts much more closely.
Abstract: SUMMARY The common methods of counting Azotobacter spp. in soil, colony counts and MPN, were compared using cell suspensions of densities determined by direct microscopic counts. A highly significant positive correlation was found between the surface-plate, MPN and total cell counts, but the MPN estimations approximated total cell counts much more closely. Inclusion of 1-1.5 g of agar/l of the liquid medium enhanced multiplication of azotobacters and facilitated the recording of growth in MPN estimations.

TL;DR: In this article, the line intensities in the L2MM and L3MM spectra of argon were calculated using the transition amplitudes computed byRubenstein, and the inner shell vacancy was given in inj-j notation, whereas the final double double vacancy in the outer shell is given in Russell-Saunders coupling.
Abstract: Expressions for the line intensities in theL2MM andL3MM spectra of elements of lowZ are given. For such elements the inner shell vacancy is given inj-j notation whereas the final double vacancy in the outer shell is given in Russell-Saunders coupling. Line intensities in theL2MM andL3MM spectra of argon are calculated using the transition amplitudes computed byRubenstein. No configuration interaction is considered.

TL;DR: Intravenous pyelography in 5 patients with severe haematuria revealed bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureters with multiple bladder filling defects, and it is suggested that these schistosomal granulomatous lesions of the bladder may be the main source of bleeding.
Abstract: In 18 patients with Schistosoma haematobium infection the urinary blood loss was measured by labelling the red blood cells in vivo with 59Fe 9 of the 18 had recurrent severe haematuria with bright to dark red urine; the other 9 had occasional terminal haematuria and clear urine In those with severe haematuria the daily blood loss ranged from 2·6 to 126 ml, and the daily iron loss from 0·6 to 37·3 mg There was no calculated blood loss in the patients with occasional terminal haematuria and clear urine The severest iron-deficiency anaemia occurred in patients with obvious haematuria and combined S mansoni and A duodenale infections No relationship was found between the worm burden, estimated by the daily egg output by Bell's egg counting technique, and the amount of urinary blood loss Intravenous pyelography in 5 patients with severe haematuria revealed bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureters with multiple bladder filling defects, and it is suggested that these schistosomal granulomatous lesions of the bladder may be the main source of bleeding

TL;DR: Cross resistance was found to amphotericin B and nystatin in one strain of Candida tropicalis but not in isolates of five other Candida species resistant to one or other of these two antibiotics.
Abstract: POLYENE resistant strains of fungi have been reported by several workers In several instances these strains have been tested for cross resistance to other polyenes1–3: strains of Candida albicans isolated as resistant to candidin were also resistant to amphotericin B and vice versa1, but neither type was resistant to nystatin Cross resistance was found to amphotericin B and nystatin in one strain of Candida tropicalis but not in isolates of five other Candida species resistant to one or other of these two antibiotics2 In contrast, a nystatin-resistant isolate of Candida stellatoidea was also resistant to amphotericin A, amphotericin B, endomycin, filipin and pimaricin3

TL;DR: High uric acid in Eremina is an adaptation for terrestrial desert habitats, compared with that of Lanistes, where the main predominationg nitrogenous constituent was ammonia, urea or both together.
Abstract: 1. In Eremina, during activity, either ammonia or urea was the main nitrogenous constituent of the excreta forming 51.83% to 76.54% of the total nitrogen (T.N.). After aestivation, both products were completely absent. 2. Uric acid N which formed from 7.94% to 16.93% of the T.N. in Eremina during activity, formed 46.36% of the T.N. in the first sample obtained after aestivation. 3. In Lanistes the main predominationg nitrogenous constituent was ammonia, urea or both together. Uric acid was very low forming not more than 2 % of the T.N. in the majority of samples analysed. 4. Nephridial uric acid content was very high in Eremina compared with that of Lanistes. The lowest uric acid N content/gm nephridia was 11.25 mg in Eremina, while it was not more than 0.22 mg in Lanistes. High uric acid in Eremina is an adaptation for terrestrial desert habitats.

TL;DR: The acid-base properties of Chromotrope 2 B have been studied, in an attempt to apply it as a metallochromic, a chromophoric or an acid base indicator as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The acid-base properties of Chromotrope 2 B have been studied, in an attempt to apply it as a metallochromic, a chromophoric or an acid-base indicator. The pK values corresponding to the four steps of ionization of the free acid are evaluated and the modes of dissociation and chelation are elucidated. As an acid-base indicator Chromotrope 2 B has proved to be similar in behaviour to phenol-phthalein with a determined pH interval of 7.5–9.5.

TL;DR: Investigation of the possibility that some intestinal helminths may induce disordered tryptophan metabolism in the human host revealed that infection with either A. lumbricoides or Ancylostoma duodenale induced functional pyridoxine deficiency in the host, which did not manifest itself by clinical symptoms of pellagra in theHost.
Abstract: Tryptophan is metabolized to nicotinic acid in man through the formylkynurenine pathway. Disordered metabolism of this amino acid with the accumulation of intermediate metabolites (some of which are carcinogenic) had been encountered in patients with bilharzia. The aim of this work was to investigate the possibility that some intestinal helminths— Ascaris lumbricoides and Ancylostoma duodenale —may induce disordered tryptophan metabolism in the human host. Results revealed that infection with either A. lumbricoides (7 cases), or A. duodenale (8 cases) induced functional pyridoxine deficiency in the host. This deficiency was evidenced by the accumulation of certain metabolites along the tryptophan-nicotinic-acid pathway. The abnormal pattern encountered in these cases could be partially improved by pyridoxine supplements. Furthermore, this impairment in the reactions leading to the formation of nicotinic acid from its precursor, did not manifest itself by clinical symptoms of pellagra in the host.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the size of the family of schizophrenics is a function not only of the age of onset of the disease, determining the length of the premorbid period of marriage, but also of the course of the illness determining the degree of chronicity and residual manifestations.
Abstract: The incidence and method of marriage, as well as the fertility of 132 schizophrenics (67 males and 65 females) and 108 manic-depressives (40 males and 68 females) were compared to those found in 120 control medical cases (60 males and 60 females) within the same range of age, social class and educational status in the outpatient clinic of Kasr-El-Aini hospital, Cairo. Schizophrenics were found to have fewer marriages and to show a diminished incidence of love marriage. Some schizophrenic men married by the forced method which was not encountered in males of the manic-depressive or control groups. Forced marriage did not protect against the onset of schizophrenia. — Schizophrenics have a smaller number of children than manic-depressives and controls and show a significant diminution of the proportion of children they have after the onset of the disease when compared to manic-depressives. On the other hand, manic-depressives did not differ significantly from controls in any of the points investigated in this study. — It is suggested that the size of the family of schizophrenics is a function not only of the age of onset of the disease, determining the length of the premorbid period of marriage, but also of the course of the illness determining the degree of chronicity and residual manifestations.

TL;DR: In fumigated soils the counts ofNitrosomonas andNitrobacter were markedly reduced and remained lower than the counts in the untreated soils for the 30 days duration of the experiment, and the inhibitory effects of DD were to some extent influenced by soil type, being most marked in sandy and loam and least in calcareous soils.
Abstract: The application of DD, a 1∶1 mixture of 1,3-dichloropropene and 1,2-dichloropropane, at field rate, to soil had neither stimulatory nor suppressive effects on bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi and cellulose decomposing bacteria. The toxic effect of the nematocide onAzotobacter and nitrogen-fixing clostridia was slight, the organisms recovering in a very short time. In fumigated soils the counts ofNitrosomonas andNitrobacter were markedly reduced and remained lower than the counts in the untreated soils for the 30 days duration of the experiment. The inhibitory effects of DD were to some extent influenced by soil type, being most marked in sandy and loam and least in calcareous soils.

TL;DR: An alga which is attached to the snail Biomphalaria boissyi was identified as Cladophora glomerata and the presence of the algae affected the fecundity of snails by reducing the number of egg masses laid per week, number of fertilized eggs per mass and hatchability.
Abstract: 1. An alga which is attached to the snail Biomphalaria boissyi was identified as Cladophora glomerata. 2. This alga may produce a substance (probably acrylic acid) which causes high mortality of affected as well as unaffected snails. An acrid smell was detected in affected dead snails. 3. The presence of the algae affected the fecundity of snails by reducing the number of egg masses laid per week, the number of fertilized eggs per mass and hatchability.
