TL;DR: When compared to controls, culture bound neurotics were found to have significantly higher proportions of the husbandless, the childless and those experiencing threats of husband loss.
Abstract: Sixty female patients exhibiting the quadrad of neurotic symptoms: giddiness, palpitation, nausea and general fatigue were compared to a control group of forty female neurotics whose symptoms did not show this constellation. The syndrome for which the name culture bound neurosis has been employed is an exceedingly chronic syndrome occurring mostly in females who cannot satisfy the social criteria of women's role fulfilment according to Qatari value systems. The syndrome is initiated, bound and maintained by sociocultural expectations. When compared to controls, culture bound neurotics were found to have significantly higher proportions of the husbandless, the childless and those experiencing threats of husband loss. The significance of the somatic symptoms constituting culture bound neurosis in forsaking its psychosocial roots is discussed. The social role failure is erroneously ascribed by the patients to the apparent physical dysfunction.

TL;DR: In this article, two active RC oscillator circuits suitable for integration are given, one of a second order and using two opposite polarity current conveyors and the other of a third-order oscillator with the advantage of using only one current conveyor.
Abstract: Two novel active RC oscillator circuits suitable for integration are given. The active building block used is the current conveyor. Both networks have the advantage of using earthed capacitors. One circuit is of a second order and uses two opposite polarity current conveyors and the other is a third-order oscillator with the advantage of using only one current conveyor.

TL;DR: Schistosome infection of the snails Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus affected their citric acid cycle pathways; especially those concerned with succinic and cytochrome oxidases as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: 1. 1. Schistosome infection of the snails Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus affected their citric acid cycle pathways; especially those concerned with succinic and cytochrome oxidases. 2. 2. The rate of gluconeogenesis was decreased in schistosome-infected snails to 62 per cent for Bulinus truncatus and to 45 per cent for Biomphalaria alexandrina. 3. 3. Lactic acid production was increased in schistosome-infected snails to 52 and 73 per cent that of uninfected B. alexandrina and B. truncatus respectively. 4. 4. Schistosome infection caused a marked decrease in the glycogen content of the tissues of both snail species. 5. 5. The effect of schistosome infection on the intermediary metabolism of both snails is discussed.

TL;DR: Although the growth of the immature stages of C. capreolus was accompanied by an increasing consumption of prey, yet their total consumption was less than 30% of that of the female adult, cannibalism occurred during shortage of food.
Abstract: Cunaxa capreolus Berlese failed to develop on diets of plant material but developed equally well on diets of booklice (Psocoptera) or of the citrus brown mite,Eutetranychus orientalis (Klein), which were eaten in their active stages and not as eggs. Cannibalism occurred during shortage of food. Although the growth of the immature stages ofC. capreolus was accompanied by an increasing consumption of prey, yet their total consumption was less than 30% of that of the female adult. The number of prey individuals consumed byC. capreolus was inversely related to temperature but consumption rate increased slightly with increasing temperature.

TL;DR: The pyrazolo[1,5-Diamino-4-phenylazo-pyrazoles (1a-1c) react with acetylacetone and with ethyl acetoacetate to yield the corresponding pyrimidine derivatives 2a-2c and 3a-3c, respectively.
Abstract: 3,5-Diamino-4-phenylazo-pyrazoles (1a–1c) react with acetylacetone and with ethyl acetoacetate to yield the corresponding pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives 2a–2c and 3a–3c, respectively. Whereas 1a–1c add readily to methyl acrylate yielding the 4,5,6,7-tetrahydropyrazolo[1,5-a]-pyrimidine derivatives 5a–5c, 1a–1c add to methylacrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate only under drastic conditions to yield 5d–5f. The pyrimido[1,2:2′,3′]pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives 10a–10c are prepared by the action of acrylonitrile on 2a–2c. Compounds 10a–10c are readily converted into the corresponding oxo derivatives 12a–12c on treatment with acetic acid-hydrochloric acid mixture.

TL;DR: Investigation of the effect of ascorbic acid and five amino acids and their use is suggested to improve the availability of the Fe content of everyday diets and supplementation of haematinic therapy with these compounds is recommended.
Abstract: 1. Studies were done on the effect of ascorbic acid and five amino acids (histidine, cystine, cysteine, valine and glutamic acid) on intestinal iron absorption in a group of ninety Egyptian infants and young children, of which fifty-seven were healthy controls and thirty-three were suffering from Fe-deficiency anaemia. 2. Supplements tested promoted Fe absorption in healthy controls in the following order: valine larger than histidine larger than ascorbic acid. Cysteine, glutamic acid and cystine were found to have no significant effect. 3. Supplementation with valine, ascorbic acid and histidine also increased intestinal Fe absorption in anaemic subjects, but to a lesser extent than in controls. 4. Supplementation of haematinic therapy with these compounds is recommended. Their use is also suggested to improve the availability of the Fe content of everday diets.

TL;DR: A novel Y-circulator, constructed from operational amplifier (op-amp) weighted summers, consists of three op-amps and a few resistors and is integrable and able to be designed for zero or finite gain.
Abstract: A novel Y-circulator, constructed from operational amplifier (op-amp) weighted summers, consists of three op-amps and a few resistors and is integrable. It can be designed for three different or equal, complex or real, balanced or grounded terminations. The small leakage to the "isolated" port is caused by the finite common mode rejection of the op-amp and the sensitivity of the circuit to component deviations. One important merit of the new circulator is its ability to be designed for zero or finite gain, the gain-bandwidth product being, for a matched circulator, half that of the op-map. The circulator consists effectively of three "stages" or "active hybrid networks." Measurements confirm the analytical expectations. Finally, circuits are suggested for the use in the telephone set, at the ends of long distance telephone transmission circuits, in bidirectional repeaters, in filter connection, and in gyrator realization.

TL;DR: Overall homogeneity of the three samples, closer similarity in the coastal region to adjacent North African populations, and Negroid influence in the Sahara Libyans were revealed.
Abstract: Anthropological studies were done on 1276 Libyans from the Mediterranean cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, and from Sabha southward in The Sahara. The incidences of hemoglobin (Hb)-S and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency were low in the coastal areas and significantly high in Sabha. Hb-C occurred sporadically in Tripoli and Sabha, and was absent from Benghazi in the east. One case of Hb-J Benghazi was noted. There were no significant differences in the ABO blood group and Rh0 (D) type distributions in the three localities. G-6-PD gene GdA frequency was significantly high in Sabha. The lowest value of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD) gene PGDA frequency and highest value of the gene PGDC were in Sabha. Adenylate kinase (AK) gene AK2 was only detectable in Tripoli. Acid phosphatase (AP) gene Pa frequency in Sabha was more than twice that in Tripoli and Benghazi, while Pc was distinctly lower in Sabha than in the northern cities. Haptoglobin gene Hp1 frequency was almost identical in all areas. Anthropometric measurements revealed overall homogeneity of the three samples, closer similarity in the coastal region to adjacent North African populations, and Negroid influence in the Saharan Libyans. Anthropometry substantiated findings from blood markers.

TL;DR: A new metabolite, 2-sulphanilamido-4-hydroxyprimidine, which comprised about 15% of the total sulphonamide in urine was isolated and was isolated following intravenous administration of sulphadiazine to goats.
Abstract: 1. Following intravenous administration of sulphadiazine (2-sulphanilamido-pyrimidine) to goats, unchanged sulphadiazine comprised the major part of the total sulphonamide in blood plasma, milk and urine samples.2. Relatively small amounts of N4-acetylsulphadiazine were excreted in milk and urine. The amount of conjugated metabolites in urine was small, but was comparatively large in the milk samples.3. A new metabolite, 2-sulphanilamido-4-hydroxypyrirnidine, which comprised about 15% of the total sulphonamide in urine was isolated.

TL;DR: In this paper, the radial part of the wave functions were calculated using the parametric potential method and the least squares fit of energy levels was applied to obtain the angular part of wave functions.
Abstract: Line strengths for 5s2 5p4 6s−5s2 5p4 6p transition in xenon are calculated in intermediate coupling scheme. The parametric potential method is used in calculating the radial part of the wave functions while the method of least squares fit of energy levels is applied in obtaining the angular part of the wave functions. Lifetimes of the 6p states obtained using these methods show a good agreement with data from electron-impact experiments.

TL;DR: In this article, an extraction study was performed on tracer concentrations of cadmium halides in absence and presence of sulphuric acid, and the mechanism of extraction has been discussed in light of the obtained results.
Abstract: An extraction study was performed on tracer concentrations of cadmium halides in absence and presence of sulphuric acid. Inert solvents, nitrobenzene, a long chain amine (Amberlite LA-2) and organophosphorus solvents (TBP and HDEHP) have been investigated. The comparative stability of cadmium chloride and bromide TBP solvates were determined. The presence of sulphuric acid was found to enhance considerably the extraction of cadmium halides by nitrobenzene, Amberlite LA-2 and TBP. The mechanism of extraction has been discussed in light of the obtained results.

TL;DR: In this article, selective hydrogenation of ergosterol or its acetate in solution in different solvents over Raney nickel to give 5α-ergost-7,22-dien-3β-ol or their acetate can be controlled by the addition of paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, and dimethylaniline, the latter 2 giving the best yield.
Abstract: Selective hydrogenation of ergosterol or its acetate in solution in different solvents over Raney nickel to give 5α-ergosta-7,22-dien-3β-ol or its acetate can be controlled by the addition of paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, and dimethylaniline, the latter 2 giving the best yield. When using pure solvents 5α-ergost-7-en-3β-ol or its acetate can be obtained in almost quantitative yield.

TL;DR: In this paper, the instability of a uniform cantilever compressed by a follower force at its free tip is investigated and it is found that the cantilevers becomes unstable by flutter and that the critical force and the critical frequency depend on both damping coefficient and foundation modulus.
Abstract: The instability of a uniform cantilever compressed by a follower force at its free tip is investigated. The cantilever is supported on an elastic foundation and subjected to external viscous damping. The differential equation of lateral vibration of the cantilever is solved simply by Galerkin's method and the instability boundary is determined by applying Routh's criterion. It is found that the cantilever becomes unstable by flutter and that the critical force and the critical frequency depend on both damping coefficient and foundation modulus. Only with no damping is the critical force independent of foundation modulus, a phenomenon reported by other investigators.

TL;DR: Two colorimetric micromethods are described for the determination of atropine-hyoscyamine and hyoscine (scopolamine) using p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and citric acid-acetic anhydride as the color reagents.
Abstract: Two colorimetric micromethods are described for the determination of atropine-hyoscyamine and hyoscine (scopolamine), using p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and citric acid-acetic anhydride as the color reagents. These methods are sensitive to 60-1200 and 10-360 mug alkaloid/10 ml. The colorimetric methods were also successfully applied after a preliminary thin layer chromatographic separation of the alkaloids. A gas-liquid chromatographic procedure was also developed, which yielded comparable results with the colorimetric methods.

TL;DR: In this paper, the breakdown strength of metal/anodic-oxide/metal structures appear to have an upper bound at values close to the so-called formation field, which is suggested to be real and is due to field enhancement at the cathode in the MIM structure resulting from ionic transport in the oxide.
Abstract: Experimental data are reported illustrating that the breakdown strength of metal/anodic-oxide/metal structures appear to have an upper bound at values close to the so-called formation field. It is suggested that this effect is real and is due to field enhancement at the cathode in the MIM structure resulting from ionic transport in the oxide. This, in turn, causes increased injection current as the electric field in the oxide reaches a critical value.
