TL;DR: In this paper, the static load-carrying capacity of scarf and stepped-lap adhesive-bonded joints is derived for most practical geometries and materials, including a simple algebraic formula which serves as a close lower bound, within a small fraction of a per cent of the true answer.
Abstract: Continuum mechanics solutions are derived for the static load-carrying capacity of scarf and stepped-lap adhesive-bonded joints. The analyses account for adhesive plasticity and adherend stiffness imbalance and thermal mismatch. The scarf joint solutions include a simple algebraic formula which serves as a close lower bound, within a small fraction of a per cent of the true answer for most practical geometries and materials. Digital computer programs were developed and, for the stepped-lap joints, the critical adherend and adhesive stresses are computed for each step. The scarf joint solutions exhibit grossly different behavior from that for double-lap joints for long overlaps inasmuch as that the potential bond shear strength continues to increase with indefinitely long overlaps on the scarf joints. The stepped-lap joint solutions exhibit some characteristics of both the scarf and double-lap joints. The stepped-lap computer program handles arbitrary (different) step lengths and thickness and the solutions obtained have clarified potentially weak design details and the remedies. The program has been used effectively to optimize the joint proportions.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of social change on the role relationships and adjustment of Chinese Americans are discussed, and some of the changes in the psychological and social characteristics of the Chinese are examined from empirical studies.
Abstract: This article is concerned with the effects of social change on the role relationships and adjustment of Chinese Americans. The influences of cultural and social assimilation have undermined the commitment of Chinese youths to traditional cultural norms, and social disequilibrium can be seen within the family as well as outside the home. The changing sex role of females has affected their relationships with their parents and the opposite sex. Chinese vary in the extent to which they have become progressively removed from their parental culture, and the social distances between Chinese with different life styles have segregated them into a variety of disparate groups. Some of the changes in the psychological and social characteristics of the Chinese are examined from empirical studies.

TL;DR: The mechanism (s) which produce hypopigmentation in tinea versicolor infections has not been systematically studied, but the depigmentation of the genital area in Negro Jamaican babies secondary to tineaVersicolor infection, and the recent report of multiple hypopIGmented macules of tinea Versicolor on the shaft of the penis make this hypothesis unlikely.
Abstract: The mechanism (s) which produce hypopigmentation in tinea versicolor infections has not been systematically studied. It is generally considered that the fungus may filter ultraviolet light and prevent tanning of the infected area.i' 2 However, the depigmentation of the genital area in Negro Jamaican babies secondary to tinea versicolor infection,^ the recent report of multiple hypopigmented macules of tinea versicolor on the shaft of the penis'* and our clinical observation of sunburning limited to hypopigmented patches of tinea versicolor noted in Vietnam returnees make this hypothesis unlikely. Other theories which attempt to explain this phenomenon include failure in melanin granule transfer caused by increased keratinization,^ or a thinning of the stratum cornevun with subsequent loss of melanin granules contained within this legion.^ However, no

Abstract: A pulse quaternary modulator especially to enable laser communication systems when working at high data rates to be able to operate on less laser power and on a modulation format that improves modulation efficiency. The subject modulation means can be used in transmitters and receivers and include means that make use of polarization changes in the modulator to create selective high speed electronically controlled optical time delays, and it also includes means for using a combination of polarization state and pulse position information to represent information choices. The subject means are also able to achieve M-ARY modulation when using as a source a mode-lock laser which produces output laser pulses.

TL;DR: Hyperbaric oxygenation from the study reported here appears to offer a new type of treatment for these resistant cases of osteomyelitis.
Abstract: Hyperbaric oxygen was used in the treatment of intractable osteomyelitis of the mandible. Dentists are frequently called on to manage postoperative bone infections. In spite of comprehensive antibiotic therapy, the occurrence of osteomyelitis after tooth extraction is not infrequent. The dentist is then faced with management of an intractable infection of the bone that seems to resist all conventional therapy. Hyperbaric oxygenation from the study reported here appears to offer a new type of treatment for these resistant cases of osteomyelitis.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the parameter a is not a universal constant, but that K is, at least according to the calculations done by Huffman and Bradshaw.
Abstract: with A = A + v(tw/p)~]-/2, and showed that when Eqs. (3) (with a = 0.0168) and (5) were used as the eddy- viscosity formulation in the solution of the boundary-layer equations, the agreement with experiment was improved. Bushnell and Morris6 made measurements in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers at low Reynolds numbers. They observed that when they calculated the eddy-viscosity distribution from their data, the variations with Reynolds number of the parameters K and a in the inner and the outer eddy-viscosity formulas were similar to those in Refs. 5 and 4. Recently Huffman and Bradshaw7 concluded, after examining a large number of experimental data, that the parameter K in Eq. (5) was a constant. As may be seen from all these studies, the question of the universality of these constants is not settled. In the present Note we attempt to settle the question by showing that the parameter a is not a universal constant, but that K is— at least according to the calculations done by the author.

TL;DR: The authors found that narrow stereotypic perceptions of and prejudice toward the Chinese have been so pervasive and tenable that Americans of Chinese ancestry do not perceive themselves with a meaningful identity, and there is rising protest and counterresponse to the restrictive perceptions among younger Asian Americans who seek the identity and acceptance they have been denied by others and themselves.
Abstract: Americans have perpetuated inaccurate images and attitudes concerning the Chinese that suggest the operation of social-psychological anomalies and prevent the growth of healthy human relations. Narrow stereotypic perceptions of and prejudice toward the Chinese have been so pervasive and tenable that Americans of Chinese ancestry do not perceive themselves with a meaningful identity. Examination of American social studies textbooks for elementary and secondary schools shows that Asian studies and the involvement of Asians in American history are barely mentioned or neglected completely; furthermore what information is given reinforces stereotypic illusions. There is rising protest and counterresponse to the restrictive perceptions among younger Asian Americans who seek the identity and acceptance they have been denied by others and themselves.

TL;DR: In this paper, a stress coining fastened joint for minimizing stress concentration in a wall of an aperture in a metallic structural member, the tool being a rigid elongated shaft adapted for forcible insertion through the aperture.
Abstract: A stress coining fastened joint, for minimizing stress concentration in a wall of an aperture in a metallic structural member, the tool being a rigid elongated shaft adapted for forcible insertion through the aperture. The shaft has end portions and is provided with a plurality of different diameter, annular protuberances spaced intermediate the end portions. The largest of the protuberances has a diameter of such predetermined relationship to the diameter of the aperture, that upon a forced insertion thereof through the aperture the material forming the wall of the aperture is displaced radially substantially the difference between the diameter of the largest protuberance and the diameter of the aperture. The displaced material will thereafter rebound approximately one-half of the initial displacement. The stress coining tool may be combined with a conventional fastener to provide a simultaneous stress coining and fastening operation.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a whole-saliva calcium and potassium product over 300 in subjects on digoxin with normal renal function correlates with a diagnosis of digitalis toxicity.
Abstract: Stimulated whole saliva was collected from 118 subjects: 36 were not receiving digitalis; 40 received digitalis but were nontoxic; 14 were digitalis-toxic; 24 had impaired renal function; and four subjects were followed during the administration of digitalis. Saliva calcium and potassium products in the digitalis-toxic group were significantly higher than in the nontoxic group. Subjects with impaired renal function had a significantly higher saliva calcium and potassium product than those with normal renal function. The subjects followed during the administration of digoxin showed an apparent correlation between electrocardiogram changes and an elevated saliva calcium and potassium product. This study has demonstrated that a whole-saliva calcium and potassium product over 300 in subjects on digoxin with normal renal function correlates with a diagnosis of digitalis toxicity.

TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-stage, well-drilling mast assembly, particularly adapted to mobile drilling platforms, such as drilling vessels, is presented, the assembly having a main stage mast and an auxiliary mast, both pivoted to the platform for swinging movements between horizontal and vertical positions.
Abstract: A multi-stage, well-drilling mast assembly, particularly adapted to mobile drilling platforms, such as drilling vessels, the assembly having a main stage mast and an auxiliary mast, both pivoted to the platform for swinging movements between horizontal and vertical positions. The main stage carries well pipe hoisting equipment, and the auxiliary stage carries rack equipment for vertically storing well pipe, and racker equipment for moving the well pipe between the rack and the center line of the mast assembly. Slings operated by the hoisting equipment swing the stages between horizontal and vertical positions. A low profile and a low center of gravity are achieved when the stages are horizontally disposed. The distribution of the weight of the hoist, the rack, and the rackers between the stages of the mast assembly provides a multi-stage mast assembly in which the individual stages may be conveniently swung between reclined and vertical, well-drilling positions.

TL;DR: In this article, a bearing housing for high speed rotating shafts is constructed in two parts with the bearing being of the semi-floating type, where one part of the bearing housing presses against the bearing to resist any axial thrust that may be exerted on the bearing during high speed operation.
Abstract: A bearing housing for high speed rotating shafts wherein the bearing housing is constructed in two parts with the bearing being of the semi-floating type. One part of the bearing housing presses against the bearing to resist any axial thrust that may be exerted on the bearing during high speed operation. The bearing is floating on a lubricant around its outer diameter in the other portion of the two part bearing housing. With the bearing being stationary in the housing, the only critical surface becomes the internal surface between the bearing and the shaft itself. By varying the position of the two parts of the bearing housing, the passage for the lubricant to enter the bearing housing can be located at a near vertical position while permitting desired orientation of the end of the bearing housing.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the efficiency, speed, and accuracy of a three-dimensional numerical method together with the turbulence models for the Reynolds stresses for 3D boundary layer flows over general configurations.
Abstract: An accurate solution of the three-dimensional boundary layer equations over general configurations such as those encountered in aircraft and space shuttle design requires a very efficient, fast, and accurate numerical method with suitable turbulence models for the Reynolds stresses. The efficiency, speed, and accuracy of a three-dimensional numerical method together with the turbulence models for the Reynolds stresses are examined. The numerical method is the implicit two-point finite difference approach (Box Method) developed by Keller and applied to the boundary layer equations by Keller and Cebeci. In addition, a study of some of the problems that may arise in the solution of these equations for three-dimensional boundary layer flows over general configurations.

TL;DR: Both of the organisms showed evidence of the tricarboxylic acid cycle as a secondary pathway for the oxidation of carbohydrates in Microcyclus aquaticus and M. flavus.
Abstract: Radiorespirometric and enzymatic studies were conducted to determine primary and secondary pathways of carbohydrate catabolism in Microcyclus aquaticus and M. flavus. M. aquaticus catabolizes both glucose and gluconate mainly via the Entner-Doudoroff and pentose phosphate pathways with some concurrent participation of the Embden-Meyerhof pathway. M. flavus, however, oxidizes glucose mainly via the Embden-Meyerhof pathway and gluconate via the Entner-Doudoroff pathway with some simultaneous operation of the pentose phosphate pathway. Both of the organisms showed evidence of the tricarboxylic acid cycle as a secondary pathway for the oxidation of carbohydrates.
