TL;DR: In this paper, the structure and the process for making a metallic sandwich structure in which metal worksheets, preferably made from titanium alloy, are joined in a preselected pattern by an intermittent or discontinuous weld.
Abstract: The structure and the process for making a metallic sandwich structure in which metal worksheets, preferably made from titanium alloy, are joined in a preselected pattern by an intermittent or discontinuous weld. The joined sheets are sealed by a continuous weld to form an expandable envelope. Application of inert gas pressure to the envelope in a limiting fixture superplastically produces the sandwich structure as the expanded structure diffusion bonds to itself or other worksheets. Core configuration of the structure is determined by the intermittent weld pattern. Face sheets of the sandwich structure may be formed from one sheet of the envelope or may be inserted in the limiting fixture and the envelope expanded against the face sheets. Additionally, the face sheets may be preformed or formed concurrently with the core to produce the desired core and sandwich shape in a single operation.

TL;DR: Results suggest this coordinated gold compound exerts a significant inhibitory effect on essential biological processes and functions.
Abstract: Auranofin (AF), a recently introduced oral antirheumatic coordinated gold compound, was investigated for its antitumor potential. Due to certain similarities with the antitumor-coordinated compound, cis-Diamminedichloroplatinum II, we studied the effects of AF on cell proliferation. These studies included assessing DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis as measured by incorporation of 3H-thymidine, 3H-uridine, and 3H-leucine, respectively, into HeLa cells. AF was shown to exert a dose-dependent inhibition on DNA synthesis and to inhibit 3H-thymidine uptake more rapidly and persistently than 3H-uridine or 3H-leucine uptake at a gold concentration of 75--100 micrograms/dl. These three parameters were inhibited with a 24-hour exposure to 100 micrograms/dl. The inhibition of 3H-thymidine uptake in HeLa pretreated for 6 hours with 50 or 100 micrograms/dl of gold was found to be irreversible. No change in tracer uptake was observed in the acid-soluble pool or in the uptake of 3H-2-deoxy-D-glucose in these cells. Furthermore, HeLa cells demonstrated marked reductions in viability and oxygen uptake after exposure to AF. Dose-dependent surface morphological changes, e.g., blebbing, pitting, were noted in these cells after a brief treatment period. These results suggest this coordinated gold compount exerts a significant inhibitory effect on essential biological processes and functions.

Abstract: An unusually short close-up imaging system about 8.5 cm (3⅜ in.) long has been developed for document copiers, oscilloscope cameras, and computer peripheral hard-copy cameras. Arrays of simple lenses are molded in rows and columns on two parallel plastic lens plates. Each lens on the first lens plate forms a demagnified, inverted, intermediate image of a small area of the object in the space between lens plates. Each lens in the second plate erects and magnifies an intermediate image and places the resulting final image in partially overlapped registration with adjacent images, forming an erect uniform composite image of the whole object.

TL;DR: Findings suggest that PTFE could be a useful fascial buttress in inguinal hernia repair where Marlex mesh is now used.
Abstract: A new prosthetic material, microporous expanded Teflon (PTFE) was compared with Marlex mesh in the experimental animal. Triangular pieces of each material were placed beneath the transversalis fascia in the right and left groins of seven white New Zealand rabbits (mean weight, 8 kg). The animals were sacrificed are two week intervals. PTFE was found to retain its position and shape without local or peritoneal reaction. By contrast, Marlex mesh showed marked inflammatory reaction and scarring with complete distortion of the graft. Microscopically, PTFE was completely invaded by fibroblast at eight weeks, with flat orientation of graft to the fibrous tissue forming a "neofascia". In contrast, Marlex mesh lacked fibroblastic incorporation of the graft with marked scarring and distortion. These findings suggest that PTFE could be a useful fascial buttress in inguinal hernia repair where Marlex mesh is now used.

TL;DR: Patients with chronotropic incompetence, defined as a failure of the heart rate response to exercise to rise to within two standard deviations of the expected increase with exercise, were studied and compared to patients with known coronary disease by angiogram with and without ST segment depression.
Abstract: Patients with chronotropic incompetence, defined as a failure of the heart rate response to exercise to rise to within two standard deviations of the expected increase with exercise, where studied and compared to patients with known coronary disease by angiogram with and without ST segment depression. 72% of the patients with chronotropic incompetence but without ST depression had significant coronary heart disease. The demonstration of chronotropic incompetence in exercise testing has important predictive implications and should be looked upon as carefully as ST segment changes. There was no evidence of SA node ischemia in these patients. Intrinsic heart rate measurements done in this study suggest autonomic dysfunction as a possible pathophysiologic mechanism for chronotropic incompetence. The heart rate response to exercise may be a useful predictor of the presence and severity of coronary disease. Therefore, a predicted heart rate response with standard deviation for age and sex should be included as part of the stress test protocol.

TL;DR: In this article, the leachability of B and salts from two fly ash-amended soils was conducted in a column leaching experiment, where fly ash was applied to the surface 3 cm of a Baywood sand and an Arizo (calcareous) sandy, loam at 5% by weight; the columns were continously leached with Colorado River water at two different pH's.
Abstract: The leachability of B and salts from two fly ash-amended soils was conducted in a column leaching experiment. Fly ash was applied to the surface 3 cm of a Baywood (acid) sand and an Arizo (calcareous) sandy, loam at 5% by weight; the columns were continously leached with Colorado River water at two different pH's. Boron from fly ash was solubilized more readily in the Baywood than in the Arizo soil. Addition of fly ash increased B levels in the leachates from 0.25 to 2.35 μg ml−1 (Baywood) and 0.93 μg ml−1 (Arizo). Acidified leaching water had no significant effect on B leaching patterns but resulted in leaching higher soluble salts. Approximately 348 and 161 cm of water for the Arizo and the Baywood soils respectively, would be required to reduce the B concentration below a critical limit for B sensitive crops. It is suggested that crops planted when fly ash is applied for disposal/recycling on land should be both salt and B tolerant.

TL;DR: The Heads-Up Display System as mentioned in this paper uses a pitch ladder system based on Euler angle data which eliminates the erratic motion or "flip-flop" of the typical pitch ladder which is inherent and unavoidable when pitching near plus or minus 90°.
Abstract: A Heads-Up Display system which displays an attitude reference to pilots in order to provide a reference display system as a primary flight instrument The Heads-up Display system uses a pitch ladder system based on Euler angle data which eliminates the erratic motion or "flip-flop" of the typical pitch ladder which is inherent and unavoidable when pitching near plus or minus 90°, by utilizing a flexible graphics display which presents the pilot with a heads-up view as if he were located inside and at the center of an imaginary sphere which has heading and pitch angle information marked on its inner surface The display of appropriately curved bars as opposed to a straight bar pitch ladder for attitude reference more realistically depicts to the pilot the aircraft situation relative to the outside world This presentation is more easily and more reliably interpreted by the pilot and simplifies the recognition and recovery from unusual attitudes In addition, ground track, yaw rate, turn rate information is available over the entire HUD field-of-view, thus there is no need for the pilot to redirect his attention away from his primary point of interest, the velocity vector, to obtain heading and track information Appropriate equations are evaluated to obtain line-of-sight angles from the aircraft longitudinal axis to the desired pitch and heading points on the pitch ladder display Such equations are solved by computer techniques for a sufficient number of intersecting points to complete the display and the graphics hardware connects the points to form the segments of the pitch ladder which represent the imaginary lines on the sphere and displays the same in the pilot's field-of-view

Abstract: A galvanically compatible flanged sleeve is inserted within a close fitting hole in a structural joint wherein at least one of the structural members is a composite laminate. The sleeve is then expanded outwardly into a high interference fit by the insertion of a fastener therethrough. The sleeve may be of the split type and when such is used, a washer can be provided underneath the flange to prevent damage to the underlying laminate surface. Teflon coated shims may be placed between the mating surfaces of the adjacent structural members heldtogether by the joint when the stress excursions are to be applied to high levels and/or with frequency. Joints so formed of graphite/epoxy laminate have fatigue strengths approaching the ultimate static strength of the joint.

TL;DR: For urine specimens with gram-negative bacilluria, this system permitted detection, quantitation, identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing in four to six hours with reasonable, though not complete, accuracy.
Abstract: This study evaluates a new direct rapid system for urine cultures, including detection and quantitation of positive specimens by Gram stain, direct identification by 4--6-hour incubation of sediment with reagent strips, and antibiotic susceptibility testing by direct (3--4-hour) disk-elution methods. Of 987 routine urine specimens, 121 had significant (less than or equal to 10(5) colony-forming units/ml) gram-negative bacilluria, of which 89% were detected by the Gram stain. Direct rapid identification was correct in 94%. Results of direct disk-elution antimicrobial tests showed overall agreement with results of standard disk diffusion of 93% of tests, and major discrepancies in 4%. For urine specimens with gram-negative bacilluria, this system permitted detection, quantitation, identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing in four to six hours with reasonable, though not complete, accuracy.

TL;DR: In this article, the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (Bem, 1974) was used to identify the four dimensions of sex-role identity and leadership style as independent concepts, and a connection between masculine characteristics and structuring behavior as a leader was found.
Abstract: This study represents an attempt to show a relationship between leader behavior and sex-role identification. Leadership style is measured by the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (Stogdill, Goode, & Day, 1962) and sex-role identification by the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (Bem, 1974). Subjects register a strong preference for a “masculine team” manager. Results support a connection between masculine characteristics and structuring behavior as a leader, but do not uphold hypotheses for the relationship between sex-role identity and leadership style. It is suggested that research should attempt to study each of the four dimensions of sex-role identity and leadership style as independent concepts.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a field effect transconductance amplifier with improved linearity and noise rejection characteristics to provide an amplifier output having excellent temporal coherence with the input signal.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of amplifiers comprising one or more field effect devices as the active amplifying element and/or as load devices in amplifier circuits The drawbacks to using prior art techniques are many Very high voltage gains are not possible without power supply voltages which greatly exceed the drain-source voltage Further, prior amplifiers are relatively non-linear, and because the amplifier is unsymmetrical, the distortion of an AC input is also unsymmetrical, giving rise not only to high-third and other odd harmonics, but also high-second and other even harmonics Also, obviously, the output is highly sensitive to power supply fluctuations The present invention overcomes these deficiencies by providing a field effect transconductance amplifier having improved linearity and noise rejection characteristics to provide an amplifier output having excellent temporal coherence with the input signal The amplifiers utilize a series connection of two field effect devices, actual or emulated, preferably appropriately biased in a carrier velocity limited region to maximize linearity of the output A high level of rejection of power supply noise may be achieved by a third series field effect device Various embodiments including high gain and power amplifier embodiments are disclosed

TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical model was developed to predict the noise levels inside propeller-driven aircraft during cruise at M = 0.8, and two classes of noise control treatments were investigated: add-on treatments which can be added to existing structures, and advanced concepts which would require changes to the fuselage primary structure.
Abstract: An analytical model was developed to predict the noise levels inside propeller-driven aircraft during cruise at M = 0.8. The model was applied to three study aircraft with fuselages of different size (wide body, narrow body and small diameter) in order to determine the noise reductions required to achieve the goal of an A-weighted sound level which does not exceed 80 dB. The model was then used to determine noise control methods which could achieve the required noise reductions. Two classes of noise control treatments were investigated: add-on treatments which can be added to existing structures, and advanced concepts which would require changes to the fuselage primary structure. Only one treatment, a double wall with limp panel, provided the required noise reductions. Weight penalties associated with the treatment were estimated for the three study aircraft.

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical method for calculating the symmetric wakes of two-dimensional bodies for incompressible laminar and turbulent flows is presented, where the appropriate thin shear layer equations are solved by using Keller's two-point finite-difference method.
Abstract: A numerical method is presented for calculating the symmetric wakes of two-dimensional bodies for incompressible laminar and turbulent flows. The appropriate thin shear layer equations are solved by using Keller's two-point finite-difference method. To account for the inner shear layer generated by the change of boundary conditions from no slip on the body to smooth flow on the axis of symmetry, a double-structured numerical scheme is used at the trailing edge. The Reynolds shear stress term is modeled by a modified version of the algebraic eddy viscosity approach of Cebeci and Smith. A comparison of centerline velocities for laminar wake flows with zero pressure gradient indicates excellent agreement with those given by Goldstein. In addition, several laminar temperature profiles past a flat plate are computed for several Prandtl numbers. Similar calculations for turbulent wake flows also indicate excellent agreement with the experimental data of Chevray and Kovasznay and show that the centerline velocit...

TL;DR: In patients with upsloping S-T segment depression, a Q-Tc interval of 1.08 or more in the immediate postexercise period is a useful measurement in predicting coronary artery disease.
Abstract: The sensitivity, specificity and predictive value for Q-X Q-T ratio, Q-Tc interval, S-T segment depression, R wave change and various combinations of these criteria were compared in 50 healthy, normal persons and 50 persons with angiographic coronary artery disease defined as 70 percent or greater stenosis of one or more major coronary vessels. Use of a positive S-T segment response and an increase or no change in R wave amplitude as criteria for coronary artery disease resulted in 84 percent sensitivity and 96 percent specificity levels and a 95 percent predictive value. The Q-X Q-T and Q-Tc criteria offered no improvement in sensitivity, specificity or predictive value over S-T segment depression. When the study group was limited to 74 persons, 36 without and 38 with angiographically significant coronary artery disease, a Q-Tc interval of 1.08 or more in combination with either slowly or rapidly upsloping S-T depression after exercise predicted coronary disease at a sensitivity level of 76 percent compared with 50 percent with use of the S-T segment alone (P 0.05). Use of the R wave response with the presence of upsloping S-T segment depression of 1.5 mm or more 80 msec from the J point improved the sensitivity level from 50 percent for S-T depression alone to 76 percent (P 0.05]). The Q-X Q-T ratio could be measured in only 55 patients (74 percent) and offered no improvement over S-T segment depression. Upsloping S-T segment depression of 1.5 mm or more 80 msec from the J point in the immediate postexercise period is most likely a positive test for ischemia. An increase or no change in R wave amplitude in response to exercise in these patients regardless of the degree of S-T segment depression is probably indicative of coronary artery disease. In patients with upsloping S-T segment depression, a Q-Tc interval of 1.08 or more in the immediate postexercise period is a useful measurement in predicting coronary artery disease.
