TL;DR: In this paper, a process and system for vacuum impregnation of a fiber reinforcement, such as carbon cloth, with a resin to produce a resin-fiber composite is described. But it is not shown how to apply it to a mold.
Abstract: A process and system for vacuum impregnation of a fiber reinforcement, such as carbon cloth, with a resin to produce a resin-fiber composite. Liquid resin enters in arrangement or system comprising a fiber reinforcement layer on a tool or mold and is directed via a system of flow paths to impregnate the fiber reinforcement layer uniformly across the width thereof and along the length of the fiber reinforcement layer. According to one embodiment, a fiber reinforcement layer, e.g., carbon cloth, is placed on a tool. A porous paring film is applied over the fiber reinforcement layer and a bleeder layer, e.g., fiberglass, is applied over the parting film. A non-pourous film is placed over the bleeder layer, a breather cloth, e.g., fiberglass, is then applied over the non-porous film, and a vacuum bag is placed over the entire assembly and sealed to the mold surface. Liquid resin is fed to the assembly within the vacuum bag. Resin spreader means, e.g., a transverse strip of fiberglass cloth, or mechanical means, such as a slotted tube, receives the liquid resin and distributes it initially across the panel adjacent one end of the reinforcement layer after the vacuum has been applied to the assembly. The liquid resin is drawn through the bleeder cloth and through the fiber reinforcement layer from one end to the opposite thereof to completely impregnate same. The resin system is designed so that it will commence to gel when the liquid resin has completely impregnated the fiber reinforcement layer.

TL;DR: The effective thoracic and lumbar pedicle diameter as related to screw size for that pedicle was studied in six fresh-frozen human cadaver spines using axial and coronal reformatted computed tomographic images.
Abstract: The effective thoracic and lumbar pedicle diameter as related to screw size for that pedicle was studied in six fresh-frozen human cadaver spines. Measurements of the pedicle were obtained before screw insertion using axial and coronal reformatted computed tomographic (CT) images, as well as graduated sounding of the pedicle. After sequentially loading each pedicle with increasingly larger screws, measurements were taken of the outer cortical diameters. Plastic deformation of the pedicle preceded pedicle fracture or cutout when the screw thread diameter became larger than the endosteal diameter or within 80% of the outer cortical diameter as measured from the CT scan. Pedicle screws did not obtain cortical purchase within the pedicle.

TL;DR: The results of this study support the potential benefit in pain reduction by use of a Hot/Ice Thermal Blanket in the postopera tive recovery of patients undergoing ACL reconstruc tion.
Abstract: This prospective study assessed 54 consecutive arthroscopically assisted ACL reconstructions for the amount of postoperative pain relief provided by cold therapy, using the Hot/Ice Thermal Blanket. Twenty-six randomly selected patients undergoing this procedure were compared to a control group consisting of 28 patients having the identical procedure in which the Hot/Ice unit was not used postoperatively. The initial ACL injury in both groups was sports related with the exception of three patients whose injury occurred while on the job. The Hot/Ice Thermal Blanket consists of two rubber pads (blankets) connected by a hose to the main cooling unit. The pads were applied to either side of the operated knee in the operative suite. The pads received fluid which was circulated from the main unit. The temperature of the fluid was set at 50 degrees in the recovery room and the unit was run continuously until the time of discharge, which was approximately 4 days. Hot/Ice patients required 53% less injectable Demerol and 67% less oral Vistaril than patients in the control group. Hot/Ice patients had made the conversion from injectable to oral pain medication an average of 1.2 days sooner than did their non-Hot/Ice counterparts. There was no appreciable difference in length of hospital stay. Physical therapy and nursing records documented a greater percentage of compliant patients in the Hot/Ice group. According to these records the Hot/Ice patients were more helpful in self-assistance, were out of bed and ambulating in the halls more quickly, and did their range of motion exercises with greater ease.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

TL;DR: In this article, a sample of 574 college students constructed messages resisting one of four teacher compliance-gaining scenarios and were then labeled as compliant or non-conformity.
Abstract: Instruction in the college classroom is commonly, but inaccurately described as “easy to manage”; simply because students are supposed to have outgrown aggravating behaviors unique to adolescents. In fact, what college instructors face are new types of student resistance to their attempts to motivate on‐task learning behavior. Examining student resistance to teacher compliance‐gaining efforts, this investigation inductively derived a typology of students’ compliance‐resistance strategies that are frequently used in the college classroom. A sample of 574 college students constructed messages resisting one of four teacher compliance‐gaining scenarios. The unitizing and subsequent coding of 2,916 messages resulted in 19 separate categories which were then labeled. Research questions probed the impact of teacher immediacy and type of strategy employed by teachers on student message generation and whether likelihood of resistance was related to the number of messages generated.

TL;DR: Once the bony changes in the capitellum are detected, and pain remains despite conservative management, it is found that symptoms can be improved with surgery, but persist in female gymnasts, and the return to high-level competitive gymnastics is unlikely.
Abstract: Ten cases of osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral capitellum are reviewed in seven high-performance female gymnasts, ranging in age from 10 to 17 years old. All but one were evaluated and treated with arthroscopy and/or arthrotomy, with curettage of loose articular margins, drilling of the lesion, and removal of loose bodies. The average length of follow-up is 2.9 years, and includes interview, physical examination, and roentgenographic evaluation. This injury has been previously described in relation to compressive forces across the radiocapitellar joint from repetitive valgus loading in a developing epiphysis. Only one of the athletes, at the time of follow-up, was still in competitive gymnastics. Each has a minimal limitation in range of motion, with crepitus and often catching noted by history and on examination. These cases double the limited literature on this injury in young, female gymnasts. They stimulate concern for the proper and early evaluation and treatment of elbow injuries in this at risk group. Once the bony changes in the capitellum are detected, and pain remains despite conservative management, we have found that symptoms can be improved with surgery, but persist in female gymnasts. Our experience in this more-advanced group is that the return to high-level competitive gymnastics is unlikely.

TL;DR: Electrical findings in myasthenia gravis, Lambert–Eatonmyasthenic syndrome, and botulinum intoxication are discussed from the subcellular level via the cellular level (SFEMG) to the integrated responses of whole muscle (RNS) as a rational means of understanding the technique of clinical repetitive nerve stimulation.
Abstract: Clinical testing for neuromuscular dysfunction is supported by an extensive amount of excellent basic information about normal and abnormal subcellular physiology and ultrastructure. This information provides an essential frame of reference for describing the rationale of single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG). SFEMG in turn helps to explain the more conventional clinical testing of neuromuscular function by repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS). Electrical findings in myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, and botulinum intoxication are discussed from the subcellular level via the cellular level (SFEMG) to the integrated responses of whole muscle (RNS) as a rational means of understanding the technique of clinical repetitive nerve stimulation.

TL;DR: In this sample of women with premenstrual depression, there was no significant effect of menstrual cycle phase on the timing of temperature minima, and sleep EEG alterations similar to those reported in some patients with major depressive disorder were not found.
Abstract: After a 2-month evaluation period, eight women with moderate to severe premenstrual depression and eight age- and sex-matched controls underwent sleep electroencephalographic (EEG) and temperature recordings 2 nights a week over the course of one menstrual cycle. Overall, patients had more Stage 2 (%) sleep and less rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (% and minutes) than normal controls. Stage 3 sleep and number of intermittent awakenings varied with phases of the menstrual cycle. Temperature minima were earlier in patients compared with controls, but this difference was not statistically significant, and there was no significant effect of menstrual cycle phase on the timing of temperature minima. Wrist motor activity did not change during the menstrual cycle in patients or controls. Thus, in this sample of women with premenstrual depression, we did not find sleep EEG alterations similar to those reported in some patients with major depressive disorder. In light of the small number of subjects and the large individual variability, the absence of marked changes with the menstrual cycle may be a function of a Type II error.

Abstract: For a sample of 147 fifth-year students enrolled in a teacher training program at the elementary school level, both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses involving orthogonal and oblique solutions were carried out on a correlation matrix of scores on 22 items from a self-report inventory of teacher burnout that was adapted with permission from the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The modifications incorporated within the new instrument, which is referred to as the College Student Survey (CSS), constituted the substitution of words within several item statements that would be more suitable in a teaching context than were the statements in the MBI which were oriented toward workers in other forms of public service. As in the instance of other factor analytic studies with the MBI, the three hypothesized constructs of burnout described as emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment were clearly defined in all factor solutions irrespective of whether the items were scored for fr...

TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between pornography and attitudes toward women was assessed in two correlational studies, and the effect of (nonviolent) erotica on attitudes towards women was tested experimentally.
Abstract: It is a widespread belief that pornography causes negative attitudes toward women, but tests of this belief are contradictory. A large body of research has studied the effect of violent pornography on behavior, but the effects of erotica and violence have often been confounded. Thus, the relationship between pornography and attitudes toward women was assessed in two correlational studies, and the effect of (nonviolent) erotica on attitudes towards women was tested experimentally. The dependent measure was the score on a questionnaire measuring attitudes toward women and women's issues. The questionnaire possessed high reliability; factor analysis indicated a single general factor. Participants included 184 psychology students and 20 patrons at an “adult” theater. Multiple linear regressions indicated that hours of viewing pornography was not a reliable predictor of attitudes toward women in either sample. Patrons of the adult theater, who viewed more pornography, had more favorable attitudes toward women ...

TL;DR: A large number of patients have been found to demonstrate evidence of intraosseous trabecular disruption, or edema and hemorrhage of medullary bone, or stress type injuries, all of which are radiographically occult.
Abstract: During the course of MRI examinations of the knee for possible internal derangement, the hip for avascular necrosis, and the shoulder for rotator cuff tears, we have encountered many examples of unsuspected fractures of the tibial plateau, femoral condyles, pelvis, hip and proximal humerus. These fractures were either radiographically inapparent or demonstrated very subtle abnormalities that were missed on prospective interpretation. In addition, a large number of patients have been found to demonstrate evidence of intraosseous trabecular disruption, or edema and hemorrhage of medullary bone, or stress type injuries, all of which are radiographically occult. The clinical significance of these osseous abnormalities varies and is dependent upon the degree of injury. It is believed that an awareness of these osseous abnormalities will improve the accuracy of MRI interpretation, will heighten an appreciation of the subtle radiographic abnormalities that may be present, and will improve patient evaluation and ...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a brief description of categories of instrumentation to provide the reader with a foundation within which the psychometric issues in the assessment of creativity can be viewed.
Abstract: In this first section, an overview of the remaining seven divisions of the chapter is presented. The second section affords a brief description of categories of instrumentation to provide the reader with a foundation within which the psychometric issues in the assessment of creativity can be viewed. In the third section, psychometric concerns pertaining to construct validity, content validity, and criterion-related validity are addressed. Subsequent to an abbreviated review of the meaning of reliability, concerns regarding optimal approaches to the estimation of reliability of creativity measures are considered in the fourth section. The impact upon reliability and validity of scoring procedures is examined in the fifth section with particular emphasis on the presence of fluency as a confounding factor in the interpretation of scores of measures of divergent thinking. The sixth section provides a survey of a number of the difficulties encountered in establishing normative data for the understanding of scores on measures of creativity. A cursory exploration of a few selected issues in the administration of tests of creativity follows in the seventh section, and the eighth section contributes a concluding statement.

Abstract: A microscopic voltage controlled field emission electron amplifier device consists of a dense array of field emission cathodes with individual cathode impedances employed to modulate and control the field emission currents of the device. These impedances are selected to be sensitive to an external stimulus such as light, x-rays, infrared radiation or particle bombardment; so that the field emission current varies spacially in proportion to the intensity of the controlling stimulus. When a phosphorus screen or other suitable responsive element is provided, the device functions as a solid state image convertor or intensifier.

TL;DR: Eight adults who had back pain and sciatica that was caused by Grade-III or IV isthmic spondylolisthesis of the fifth lumbar vertebra on the sacrum were treated consecutively by in situ arthrodesis without decompression, and all of the preoperative neurological deficits resolved.
Abstract: Eight adults who had back pain and sciatica that was caused by Grade-III or IV isthmic spondylolisthesis of the fifth lumbar vertebra on the sacrum were treated consecutively by in situ arthrodesis without decompression. The anterior displacement of the fifth lumbar vertebra averaged 82 per cent (range, 66 to 118 per cent). The length of follow-up averaged 5.5 years (range, two to fourteen years). All of the arthrodeses resulted in a solid fusion and excellent relief of both the back pain and the sciatica. All of the preoperative neurological deficits resolved, with the exception of a decreased or absent Achilles-tendon reflex in two patients. There were no complications, and all of the patients returned to their preoperative occupations.

TL;DR: Since July 1980, 90 patients have had 95 permanent pacemakers implanted via an iliac vein approach, with results that show lead dislogement remains a major weakness of the approach, and decreases its utility.
Abstract: Since July 1980, 90 patients have had 95 permanent pacemakers implanted via an iliac vein approach. An incision is made superior to the inguinal ligament and the iliac vein is cannulated with a single lead for the ventricle or two leads for the atrium and ventricle. The pulse generator is placed in the subcutaneous tissue of the abdomen lateral to the umbilicus via a second incision. Overall 28 pacemaker implants were for atrial pacing, 53 for ventricular pacing and 14 were dual chamber. Nine (21%) of the atrial leads displaced and required repositioning and 5 (7%) of the ventricular leads dislodged and required revision. Lead dislodgement, especially in the atrium, remains a major weakness of the approach, and decreases its utility. Eleven percent of the last 19 atrial leads have dislodged. Nevertheless, the method is simple to perform and is presented as an alternative to the usual pectoral implantation site.

TL;DR: Hierarchical multiple regression showed that the severity of hassles was directly related to depression for both groups, and there was no support for the notion that social support serves as a buffer against depression.
Abstract: Black and White American college students were compared to determine how daily hassles, coping strategies, and social support related to depression. Although the mean intensity of hassles did not differ, Black students reported a higher frequency of hassles. Cumulative severity of hassles, defined in terms of both intensity and frequency was therefore higher for Black students. White students perceived more support from friends than from family, but the opposite held for Black students. Mean scores on type of coping (active problem solving, seeking social support, or avoidance) were similar, as were the reported levels of depression. Hierarchical multiple regression showed that the severity of hassles was directly related to depression for both groups. Race did not interact with any index of social support, except perceived family support, which was related to lower depression among Black students. There was no support for the notion that social support serves as a buffer against depression.

Abstract: Method of detecting chronic exposure of an organism to a pollutant, and for evaluating biological damage due to chronic exposure to sublethal levels of pollutants and kits for carrying out the method are disclosed. The methods comprise: (a) sampling at least one organism in order to determine whether it has been chronically exposed to a sublethal concentration of one or more pollutants in its environment, under sampling conditions that do not induce any additional heat shock protein (hsp) response in the organism; (b) obtaining a sample of cells or secretions of said organism, suspected of having elevated levels of heat shock proteins and solubilizing the heat shock proteins in the sample; and (c) measuring the concentration of a heat shock protein selected from hsp 70, hsp 60 and ubiquitin, in said sample. The invention also provides methods for evaluating biological damage due to chronic exposure to a sublethal concentration of one or more pollutants comprising detecting chronic exposure of the organism by the above method and then comparing the measured concentration of hsp to a predetermined standard calibration curve which correlates hsp concentration with physiological impairment of growth or reproductive processes, and kits for carrying out the methods.

Abstract: A combination of an interactive boundary-layer procedure and ^"-method has been used to determine the locations of the onset of transition for flows over a flat plate with bumps or hollows. The details of the procedure are examined and the need for fine-grid calculations in regions of strong adverse pressure gradients emphasized. The location of initial disturbance is shown to be unimportant, provided it does not occur in the region where the critical Reynolds number is higher than the flow Reynolds number. The procedure allows good results for flows with and without separation. Possible means of improvement of the method are discussed.
