Abstract: A six-year, school-based prevention program, which modified classroom teacher practices, offered parent training, and provided child social skills training, was evaluated for its effects on school failure, drug abuse, and delinquency among low-income urban children. Compared to a low-income control group, children in the intervention group showed enhanced school commitment and class participation. The girls in the group also evidenced lower rates of substance use initiation, while the boys exhibited increased social and school work skills.

Abstract: This article interprets the five-factor model as subsuming variation in normative, species-typical systems with adaptive functions in the human environment of evolutionary adaptedness. It is argued that the evolutionary logic of personality systems is apparent in the patterning of mean sex differences in personality. Personality systems are conceptualized as evolved motivational systems with an affective core. The evolved motive dispositions at the core of personality anchor a hierarchy of levels of cognitive and behavioral functioning aimed at attaining or avoiding the affective states central to these personality systems. Personality systems are seen as often in dynamic conflict within individuals and as highly compartmentalized in their functioning between settings. While variation in personality consists of a range of viable strategies for humans, extremes on these systems tend to be maladaptive, although in at least some cases individuals who approach the maladaptive extremes of individual variation may be viewed as engaging in high-risk evolutionary strategies. Within this wide range of viable strategies, personality variation functions as a resource environment for individuals in the sense that personality variation is evaluated according to the interests of the evaluator.

Abstract: Background and Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine which of selected exercises with and without the feet free to move would enhance vastus medialis oblique muscle (VMO) activity over that of the vastus lateralis muscle (W) and whether the use of taping would increase VMO activity. Subjects. Twenty-one subjects without patellofemoral pain (PFP) syndrome and 10 subjects with PFP syndrome, aged 19 to 43 years @=26, SD= 71, participated. Metbods. Subjects were studied for the normalized, integrated electromyographic (IEMG) activity of their MO, W, and adductor magnus muscle (subjects without PFP syndrome) and the VMOm ratio using wire electrodes. Results. One exercise demonstrated greater activation of the VMO over the W when compared with similar exercises in subjects without PFP syndrome. The mean VMOhT activity ratio for terminal knee extension was 1.2 (SD= 0.5) with the hip medially rotated and 1.0 (SD= 0.4) with the hip laterally rotated. Although subjects reported that patellar taping decreased pain 94% during the step-down exercise, the VMOm ratio was not changed. Abstract: The field-induced structure in a monodisperse ferrofluid emulsion is studied. An applied magnetic field induces a magnetic dipole moment in each droplet. When the dipole-dipole interaction energy exceeds the thermal energy, a phase transition occurs as the fluid of randomly dispersed droplets changes to a solid of nearly equally sized and spaced columns. Our results show that the column spacing follows a relation ${d\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.33L}^{0.37}$ for cell thickness $3\ensuremath{\le}L\ensuremath{\le}800\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. A new theory, which treats the column shape more realistically, is developed to account for the results.

Abstract: Recent evidence suggests a larger role for personality determinants of the coping response than has been traditionally held. In the two studies presented here, we examined the influence of personality on the use of social support and other coping strategies in samples of undergraduate students. The first study surveyed a range of coping responses to naturally occurring stressors and found that Extraversion was related to social support seeking, optimism (identified as germane to coping in prior research) was related to problem solving, and both dispositions were negatively related to avoidance. The second study used an experimental approach and multiple personality measures to correct for possible methodological problems in the first. Extraversion again proved to be associated with help seeking; moreover, this relationship accounted for that of another disposition, self-esteem--a construct considered crucial in the literature. The utility of personality variables, particularly Extraversion, in predicting and explaining the choice of a coping strategy is discussed.

Abstract: Early aggressive behavior puts boys at increased risk for involvement in a variety of later problem behaviors, including delinquency and drug abuse. However, not all boys who evidence aggressive behavior in childhood continue to engage in problem behaviors in adolescence. This 3.5-year prospective study examined the role of factors hypothesized by the social development model to inhibit or increase the likelihood of subsequent involvement in serious delinquency and substance use within a sample of boys identified as aggressive by teacher report at ages 10 and 11. At ages 12 and 13, a combination of the constructs of skills for prosocial involvement, school bonding and achievement, family bonding and management practices, norms against substance use, and interaction with peers and adults involved in antisocial behavior significantly discriminated between boys who were and were not involved in serious delinquent behavior and substance use at ages 13 and 14, although family bonding and management practices appeared to contribute little to the discriminant function. Implications of the results for preventive interventions with aggressive boys are discussed.

Abstract: Background: Active nutrition therapy and the anabolic steroid oxandrolone (OX), in selected patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis, significantly improved liver status and survival. We report here on the changes in their nutritional parameters. Methods: Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) was evaluated and expressed as percent of low normal in 271 patients initially, at 1 month and at 3 months. Active therapy consisted of OX plus a high caloric food supplement vs a matching placebo and a low calorie supplement. Results: PEM was present in every patient; mean PEM score 60% of low normal. Most of the parameters improved significantly from baseline on standard care; the largest improvement seen in visceral proteins, the smallest in fat stores (skinfold thickness). Total PEM score significantly correlated with 6 month mortality (p=.0012). Processing in the system is divided into multiple processing layers, with geographical separation of tasks.

Abstract: A total of 110 patients with a diagnosis of acromiocla vicular joint separation were seen at our clinic between 1986 and 1991. Of these, 14 patients (12.7%) with grade III, IV, or V injuries required surgical reconstruc tion and were examined 2 years after surgery. All 14 patients underwent acromioclavicular reconstruction using a synthetic loop passed through drill holes in the base of the coracoid and the anterior third of the clavicle. When the loop is tightened, the clavicle is reduced ana tomically without the anterior subluxation caused by simple clavicular cerclage. At an average followup of 44.2 months, patients were evaluated using the Uni versity of California, Los Angeles, rating scale. Twelve of the 14 had good or excellent results and returned to normal sport and work activities at 6 months. Of the two initial poor results, one required revision 1 month post operatively because the patient was noncompliant, and the other required manipulation under anesthesia 3 months after surgery. Abstract: The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of equity and outcomes in customer complaint situations. The study utilized a 2 × 2 within-subjects design with equity (inequity, equity) and outcomes (low, high) as the independent variables. The dependent variables were perceived equity, behavioral intentions, resentment, and guilt. Subjects were 128 students from a large western university. It was hypothesized that high outcome situations would be perceived as more equitable than low outcome situations, regardless of equity condition; high outcome situations would yield more favorable behavioral intentions, regardless of equity condition; subjects would perceive more resentment in inequitable, low outcome situations; subjects would perceive more guilt in inequitable, high outcome situations. Hypotheses 1, 2, and 3 were supported. Hypothesis 4 was not supported. Implications for customer complaint handling practices were discussed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract: This study examined the relationship of selected cognitive and affective variables to mathematics achievement for a random sample of 60 students as they progressed through 6th, 8th,10th and 12th grades. A consistent gender difference was found for stereotyping mathematics as a male domain. No consistent significant gender difference between means was found for spatial skills, verbal skill or mathematics achievement. Confidence, verbal skill and spatial visualization were each consistently positively correlated with mathematics achievement for both males and females. No gender difference was found for these correlations. However, spatial skills alone were found to be consistent significant predictors of mathematics achievement for females each year of the study, but not for males. Verbal skill was a consistent significant predictor of mathematics achievement for males, but not for females. The results of this study could lead to a reevaluation of the hypothesis that spatial skills help boys achieve in mathematics.

Abstract: Twenty-two consecutive patients with subacromial impingement syndrome underwent arthroscopic subacromial decompression. Measurements of the subacromial space pressure and the blood pressure were recorded along with the clarity of the visual field. The clarity of the visual field was objectively determined based on the pressure at which bleeding was observed from trabecular bone or the soft tissue capillaries. A direct correlation was found between systolic blood pressure (SBP), subacromial space pressure (SASP), and the clarity of the visual field. On average, maintaining a pressure difference (SBP - SASP) of 49 mm Hg or less prevented bleeding and permitted good visualization. With a greater differential, significant bleeding occurred. Furthermore, the use of relative hypotensive anesthesia permits lower irrigation pressures and significantly reduces the risk of fluid extravasation into the subcutaneous tissues of the shoulder.

Abstract: An abnormal increase in intestinal paracellular permeability may be an important pathogenic factor in various intestinal diseases. The intracellular factors and processes that regulate and cause alteration of intestinal paracellular permeability are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to examine some of the intracellular processes involved in cytoskeletal regulation of intestinal epithelial paracellular permeability using the filter-grown Caco-2 intestinal epithelial monolayers. Cytochalasin-b and colchicine were used to disrupt the cytoskeletal elements, actin microfilaments, and microtubules. Cytochalasin-b (5 mg/ml) and colchicine (2 × 10−5M) at the doses used caused marked depolymerization and disruption of actin microfilaments and microtubules, respectively. Cytochalasin-b-induced disruption of actin microfilaments resulted in perturbation of tight junctions and desmosomes and an increase in Caco-2 monolayer paracellular permeability. The cytochalasin-b-induced disruption of actin microfilaments and subsequent changes in intercellular junctional complexes and paracellular permeability were not affected by inhibitors of protein synthesis (actinomycin-D or cycloheximide) or microtubule function (colchicine), but were inhibited by metabolic energy inhibitors (2,4-dinitrophenol or sodium azide). The cytochalasin-b-induced disturbance in Caco-2 actin microfilaments and intercellular junctional complexes and increase in paracellular permeability were rapidly reversed. The paracellular pathway “re-tightening” following cytochalasin-b removal was not affected by actinomycin-D, cycloheximide, or colchicine, but was inhibited by 2,4-dinitrophenol and sodium azide. The colchicine-induced disruption of microtubules did not have significant effect on actin microfilaments, intercellular junctions, or paracellular permeability. These findings suggest that cytochalasin-b-induced increase in Caco-2 monolayer paracellular permeability was due to actin microfilament mediated perturbation of intercellular junctional complexes. The re-tightening of paracellular pathways (following removal of cytochalasin-b) resulted from energy-mediated re-assembly of pre-existing actin microfilaments and intercellular junctional complexes. This re-closure process did not require protein synthesis or microtubule-mediated shuttling process. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Abstract: While marriages were supposed to be celebrated publicly by priests, in churches where the parties were known, many couples had reasons - among them parental disapproval, religious nonconformity, property considerations and previous entanglements - to marry in other ways. Nor was this difficult where there was no unified marriage code, where a simple exchange of vows, might constitute a valid marriage, and where unbeneficed priests were prepared to perform the ceremony in return for a drink. Clandestine marriage had represented a problem to the church and state, and to the rights of property, since the Middle Ages, eluding a variety of attempts to control it. By the 18th century it had become a scandal, with Fleet parsons marrying thousands of couples a year. In 1753 Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act nullified such irregular marriages, only to drive them to adopt other guises until the introduction of civil marriage in 1836. This study explores the nature and scale of clandestine marriage. The author describes why it attracted so many customers and why it was so hard to suppress. It aims to provide a different perspective on a central social and religious institution.

Abstract: In a series of five studies a method of assessing relationship thinking and its role in close relationship dynamics was developed. These studies were carried out with college students who responded to questionnaires. Studies 1 and 2 focused on identifying items representing the content and frequency of relationship thinking about participants' present dating relationships. Studies 3 and 4 examined personal characteristics, general relationship schema, and subjective conditions that were related to relationship thinking. Study 5 identified the ability of relationship thinking to predict individuals' perceptions of an interaction with their partners. Results uncovered three types of relationship thinking: partner, positive affect, and network. Relationship thinking was related in expected ways to several personal characteristics, subjective conditions, and general relationship schema. Relationship thinking was predictive of perceptions of distress-maintaining and relationship-enhancing interactions with the dating partners. The findings suggest increased attention to the social cognitive aspects of close relationships.

Abstract: Background: Ulcer healing, i.e. the reconstruction of the mucosal architecture, is an active process of filling the mucosal defect with proliferating and migrating epithelial cells and connective tissue. Methods: This article represents a summary of histologic and ultrastructural assessment of the cellular events occurring during healing of experimental gastric ulcer. Results: Mucosa adjacent to the ulcer crater forms a ‘healing’ zone. The gastric glands in this zone dilate and the epithelial cells lining these glands de-differentiate, express epidermal growth factor receptor, and proliferate. The latter is the result of local activation of genes encoding for EGF and its receptors. At the ulcer margin, proliferating and dividing epithelial cells migrate onto the granulation tissue to cover (re-epithelialize) the ulcer and bud into granulation tissue to reconstruct glandular structures within the ulcer scar. Abstract: A study was made to examine the effect of advanced technology engines on the performance of subsonic airplanes and provide a vision of the potential which these advanced engines offered. The year 2005 was selected as the entry-into-service (EIS) date for engine/airframe combination. A set of four airplane classes (passenger and design range combinations) that were envisioned to span the needs for the 2005 EIS period were defined. The airframes for all classes were designed and sized using 2005 EIS advanced technology. Two airplanes were designed and sized for each class: one using current technology (1995) engines to provide a baseline, and one using advanced technology (2005) engines. The resulting engine/airframe combinations were compared and evaluated on the basis on sensitivity to basic engine performance parameters (e.g. SFC and engine weight) as well as DOC+I. The advanced technology engines provided significant reductions in fuel burn, weight, and wing area. Average values were as follows: reduction in fuel burn = 18%, reduction in wing area = 7%, and reduction in TOGW = 9%. Average DOC+I reduction was 3.5% using the pricing model based on payload-range index and 5% using the pricing model based on airframe weight. Noise and emissions were not considered.

Abstract: Divergence of the interference screw placement used for femoral fixation during endoscopically assisted reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament has been described. This study is a biomechanical evaluation in 12 pairs of fresh intact bovine knees of femoral interference screws placed divergently and parallel relative to the bone block and its tunnel. One knee of each pair had the interference screw placed in a parallel fashion and the other knee had a 15 degrees divergence from the bone plug. Paired specimens were used to provide an optimal comparison of biomechanical data of the two different screw placements. No statistically significant differences were seen between the two groups when looking at ultimate load, deformation, and stiffness. Mode of failure was of more concern: in 4 of 12 divergent constructs, bone plug pullout occurred compared with only 1 of 12 in the parallel construct. The pullout strength remains high even with divergence of up to 15 degrees between the bone plug and femoral interference screws placed endoscopically.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze the projections from visually related areas of the cerebral cortex of rhesus monkey to subcortical nuclei involved in eye-movement control; i. e., the pretectal nuclear complex, the terminal nuclei of the accessory optic system (AOS), and the superior colliculus (SC). The anterograde tracer 3H-leucine was pressure injected bilaterally into the cortex of six monkeys (for a total of 12 cases) involving the primary visual cortex (area 17); the medial prestriate cortex (medial 18/19), dorsomedial area 19; the caudal portion of the cortex of the superior temporal sulcus, upper bank (cytoarchitectural area OAa) and lower bank (area PGa); the lower bank of the caudal lateral intraparietal sulcus (area POa); and the inferior parietal lobule (area 7). The results revealed that the pretectal nucleus of the optic tract received inputs from medial prestriate cortex, dorsomedial part of area 19, OAa, and PGa. The posterior pretectal nucleus received sparse projections from area 7 and the cortex lining the intraparietal sulcus (dorsomedial part of area 19 and POa). The pretectal olivary nucleus was targeted by neurons in cortex of dorsomedial arec 19, and the anterior pretectal nucleus was targeted by neurons in both dorsomedial 19 and area 7. The nuclei of the AOS (dorsal terminal; lateral terminal; and interstitial nuclei of the superior fasciculus, posterior and medial fibers) received projections exclusively from areas OAa and PGa. Furthermore, in one case with PGa injection, the medial terminal nucleus, dorsal portion, was also labeled. The visual cortical areas studied projected differentially upon the SC laminae. The primary visual area 17 projected only to the superficial laminae, i. e., stratum zonale (SZ), stratum griseum superficiale (SGS), and stratum opticum (SO). On the other hand, the medial portion of the prestriate cortex and caudal OAa and PGa targeted the superficial and intermediate laminae, i. e., SZ, SGS, SO, stratum griseum intermediale (SGI), whereas caudal area POa projected primarily to the intermediate layer SGI. Rostral area 7 (mainly 7b) neurons terminated in the stratum album intermediale (SAI); no SC terminals were found in a case in which caudal area 7 (mainly 7a) was injected. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Abstract: A hand-held massager includes an elongated handle, a contoured first massaging member or massaging head resiliently coupled to the handle, and at least one other massaging member or node mounted on the massaging head for providing an intense localized massage. The hand-held massager further includes a plurality of vibration inducing elements. A first vibration inducing element includes a main motor housed substantially within the handle is linked to a drive shaft extending from the motor into the massaging head. A massaging head eccentric cam is connected to the drive shaft within the massaging head for generally vibrating the massaging head and node relative to the handle upon rotation of the drive shaft. A second vibration inducing element includes a second motor or submotor linked to an output shaft. A second eccentric cam located substantially within the node extends from the output shaft for primarily vibrating the node upon rotation of the drive shaft. Other vibration inducing elements can be provided to vibrate additional vibratory members. Separate controls coupled to each vibration inducing element allow for independent control of each motor and the vibration induced in each massaging member. In operation, a user can adjust the relative phases of the motors to provide a wide variety of massage sensations.

Abstract: This study compared the performance of children with reading disability (RD) and normal reading achievement (NRA) on tasks of serial rapid naming, verbal fluency, letter-based word retrieval, and articulatory speed. The groups, composed of children at two discrete age levels, one younger and one older, were matched for age, gender, and neighborhood school. Analyses of the on-line measurement of the children’s serial rapid naming indicated that the children with RD had significantly larger reaction times and production durations than their NRA peers despite similar levels of accuracy. They also performed significantly worse on the categorical verbal fluency task, the letter-based word retrieval task, and the test of articulatory speed.
