Abstract: Lightning protection means for aircraft structural components includes thin, perforated, dielectric and metallic layers applied to the ordinarily lightning-accessible surfaces of composite structures. Where the outer metallic layer of the lightning protection means is formed from sprayed metal, ground connection means to the metallic layer preferably comprises a section of wire screen fused with the sprayed metal on the dielectric layer, a thin metal plate brazed to the wire screen, and a metal attachment connecting the metal plate to adjacent ground structure. Composite-to-metal or composite-to-composite structural joints are protected by making the entire bonded and bolted interface areas conductive for transfer of lightning current, or by isolating the bonded interface area to control the transfer path of the lightning current through the bolted interface area only.

Abstract: The reasons why less than 3% of cancer patients receive treatment in a clinical trial are complex and multiply determined. Because an individual cannot sign herself into a research study, an understanding of the doctor-patient interaction must be considered in addition to individual patient dynamics. Patients may be concerned that a physician's primary allegiance is to the requirements of the trial, not the specific health needs of the individual. Physicians may worry about the effects that placing an individual in a trial will have on the special doctor-patient relationship. Specific psychologic factors that may make a patient reluctant to enter a trial include self-protectiveness, time and travel constraints, concern about the quality of research versus clinical care, the nature of the informed consent, and worry about the usual low level priority assigned to quality-of-life issues in biomedical research. Enrollment in and adherence to investigative research may be served better by the construction of studies that combine questions about both medical outcome and impact of treatment on patient quality of life. Individuals who require high levels of personal control, want to feel they are a high priority with their physician, and need frequent feedback about results are not likely to be good candidates for investigative research.

Abstract: This article explores factors influencing the sustained use of Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) in math in one elementary school. General education teachers participating in research studies implemented PALS twice a week to the full class, including students both with and without disabilities. The authors examined whether teachers maintained their use of PALS after the research studies ended. They also studied how PALS was used in each classroom and assessed teachers' perceptions of its utility, their understanding of its underlying principles, and their reasons for continuing use. The continued use and fidelity of implementation remained extremely high several years after the original research projects ended. Factors influencing continued use include the high quality of professional development and support provided during the research project, the solid alignment of PALS with district and state mandates, the autonomy in teaching math that PALS allowed teachers on the days they were not using PALS...

Abstract: A viscous/inviscid interaction method is described and has been used to calculate flows around four distinctly different airfoils as a function of angle of attack. It comprises an inviscid-flow method based on conformal mapping, a boundary-layer procedure based on the numerical solution of differential equations and an algebraic eddy viscosity. The results are in close agreement with experiment up to angles close to stall. In one case, where the airfoil thickness is large, small difficulties were experienced and are described. The method is shown to be capable of obtaining results with large flow separation and quantifies the role of transition on the lift coefficient.
