TL;DR: An integrated power module for generating thermal and electrical power is provided within a housing (110) which includes inlets for fuel (156) and for air (112), a reformer chamber (116), a fuel cell stack (118), and a combustion chamber (120).
Abstract: An integrated power module for generating thermal and electrical power is provided within a housing (110) which includes inlets for fuel (156) and for air (112), a reformer chamber (116), a fuel cell stack (118), and a combustion chamber (120). Oxygen-containing gas, such as air, is introduced into the module along path (114) in one direction in heat-exchange relationship with reaction products produced in the reaction chamber traveling in an adjacent path, preferably in an opposite direction, to preheat the incoming oxygen-containing gas. A nozzle (169) having an injector for the fuel and for the oxygen-containing gas delivers these gases to the interior of the reformer chamber, where the ignition is supplied by a suitable device. The reaction products from the reformer chamber are fed to a fuel cell which will consume certain of the reaction products, such as hydrogen gas, with oxygen provided from the reaction chamber acting as an oxidizing gas. Exchange between a cathode and an anode will effect the generation of current, as well as the production of water, which normally will be absorbed as steam and passed from the fuel cell. The current generated by the fuel cell can be delivered externally to a user, while hydrogen may be combusted downstream in the combustion chamber to provide an added thermal energy source for heating. In alternative embodiments of the power module, the fuel cell is used as a shift reactor and hydrogen purification device. The primary product of this module is purified hydrogen gas in addition to heat.

Abstract: Two experiments are described in which perceptions of personal problems, optimism, and associated feelings were studied as a function of time of day and moderate exercise (walking). Over multiweek periods, participants completed self-ratings at fixed times of day representing high and low periods of energetic arousal. While ratings on individual days varied, means across all rating days indicated that problems were perceived as more serious at mid-to late afternoon, a period of low energetic arousal, than they were at late morning and after the walk, periods of high energetic arousal. Separate analyses of rated high energy and low tension states, compared to their opposites, indicated that problems were perceived as least serious in the former states. Ratings of optimism and associated feelings were consistent with the problem ratings. Also discussed are theoretical implications regarding moods as predispositional variables, state-dependent memory, and research involving naturalistic settings and aggregated measurements.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the effectiveness of the burning index (BI) for predicting wildfire occurrences in Los Angeles County, California using space-time point-process models based on an additive decomposition of the conditional intensity.
Abstract: Numerical indices are commonly used as tools to aid wildfire management and hazard assessment. Although the use of such indices is widespread, assessment of these indices in their respective regions of application is rare. We evaluate the effectiveness of the burning index (BI) for predicting wildfire occurrences in Los Angeles County, California using space–time point-process models. These models are based on an additive decomposition of the conditional intensity, with separate terms used to describe spatial and seasonal variability as well as contributions from the BI. We fit the models to wildfire and BI data from the years 1976–2000 using a combination of nonparametric kernel-smoothing methods and parametric maximum likelihood. In addition to using the Akaike information criterion (AIC) to compare competing models, we use new multidimensional residual methods based on approximate random thinning and rescaling to detect departures from the models and to ascertain the precise contribution of the BI to p...

TL;DR: This paper examined the relationship of selected cognitive and affective variables to mathematics achievement for a random sample of 60 students as they progressed through 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades.
Abstract: This study examined the relationship of selected cognitive and affective variables to mathematics achievement for a random sample of 60 students as they progressed through 6th, 8th,10th and 12th grades. A consistent gender difference was found for stereotyping mathematics as a male domain. No consistent significant gender difference between means was found for spatial skills, verbal skill or mathematics achievement. Confidence, verbal skill and spatial visualization were each consistently positively correlated with mathematics achievement for both males and females. No gender difference was found for these correlations. However, spatial skills alone were found to be consistent significant predictors of mathematics achievement for females each year of the study, but not for males. Verbal skill was a consistent significant predictor of mathematics achievement for males, but not for females. The results of this study could lead to a reevaluation of the hypothesis that spatial skills help boys achieve in mathematics.
