Abstract: Many distributed systems must be scalable, meaning that they must be economically deployable in a wide range of sizes and configurations. This paper presents a scalability metric based on cost-effectiveness, where the effectiveness is a function of the system's throughput and its quality of service. It is part of a framework which also includes a sealing strategy for introducing changes as a function of a scale factor, and an automated virtual design optimization at each scale factor. This is an adaptation of concepts for scalability measures in parallel computing. Scalability is measured by the range of scale factors that give a satisfactory value of the metric, and good scalability is a joint property of the initial design and the scaling strategy. The results give insight into the scaling capacity of the designs, and into how to improve the design. A rapid simple bound on the metric is also described. The metric is demonstrated in this work by applying it to some well-known idealized systems, and to real prototypes of communications software.

Abstract: Neural networks have recently been introduced to the microwave area as a fast and flexible vehicle to microwave modeling, simulation and optimization. In this paper, a novel neural network structure, namely, knowledge-based neural network (KBNN), is proposed where microwave empirical or semi-analytical information is incorporated into the internal structure of neural networks. The microwave knowledge complements the capability of learning and generalization of neural networks by providing additional information which may not be adequately represented in a limited set of training data. Such knowledge becomes even more valuable when the neural model is used to extrapolate beyond training data region. A new training scheme employing gradient based l/sub 2/ optimization technique is developed to train the KBNN model. The proposed technique can be used to model passive and active microwave components with improved accuracy, reduced cost of model development and less need of training data over conventional neural models for microwave design.

Abstract: This commentary outlines the origins, history, and current status of research related to children's social withdrawal and social isolation. Early research related to children's peer relationships is first explored, followed by a discussion of the relative "neglect" of social withdrawal prior to the 1980s. Increased research attention since that time is briefly reviewed; this latter research has provided a greater understanding of the causes, correlates, and consequences associated with "solitude." In the latter half of this essay, the roles of biological factors and parenting are described. The essay closes with a discussion of future directions, including the exploration of risk and protective factors for socially withdrawn children, as well as the need for more research related to prevention and intervention.

Abstract: The production cross sections of the inclusive Drell-Yan processes W-+/- -> l nu and Z/gamma* -> ll (l = e, mu) are measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector. The cross sections are reported integrated over a fiducial kinematic range, extrapolated to the full range, and also evaluated differentially as a function of the W decay lepton pseudorapidity and the Z boson rapidity, respectively. Based on an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb(-1) collected in 2010, the precision of these measurements reaches a few percent. The integrated and the differential W-+/- and Z/gamma* cross sections in the e and mu channels are combined, and compared with perturbative QCD calculations, based on a number of different parton distribution sets available at next-to-next-to-leading order.
