Abstract: Despite extensive research on the subject spanning over 70 years, uncertainty still remains as to whether happier workers are in fact more productive. This study combined longitudinal prospective and experience sampling methods to examine the relationship between happiness and self-reported productivity among Directors employed in the public and private sectors. Analyses at a trait level suggested happy people were more productive. Similarly, at the state level of analysis, people were more productive when they were happier. Among the happiness indicators examined (job satisfaction, quality of work life, life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect) positive affect was most strongly, but not exclusively, tied to productivity at both the state and trait levels. Discussion focuses on reconciling a long history of mixed findings regarding the happy-productive worker thesis.

Abstract: Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and GABA have been implicated in depression, and there is reason to believe that GABA may influence CRH functioning. The levels of CRH, and mRNA for CRH-binding protein, CRH1, and CRH2 receptors, as well as various GABAA receptor subunits (α1, α2, α3, α4, α5, δ, and γ2), were determined in several frontal cortical brain regions of depressed suicide victims and nondepressed individuals who had not died by suicide. Relative to the comparison group, CRH levels were elevated in frontopolar and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, but not in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex of suicide victims. Conversely, using quantitative PCR analyses, it was observed that, in frontopolar cortex, mRNA for CRH1, but not CRH2, receptors were reduced in suicide brains, possibly secondary to the high levels of CRH activity. In addition, mRNA of the α1, α3, α4, and δ receptor subunits was reduced in the frontopolar region of suicide victims. Interestingly, a partial analysis of the GABAA receptor functional genome revealed high cross-correlations between subunit expression in cortical regions of nondepressed individuals, suggesting a high degree of coordinated gene regulation. However, in suicide brains, this regulation was perturbed, independent of overall subunit abundance. These findings raise the possibility that the CRH and GABAA receptor subunit changes, or the disturbed coordination between these GABAA receptor subunits, contribute to depression and/or suicidality or are secondary to the illness/distress associated with it.

Abstract: Although it has been demonstrated that many of the behavioral responses to psychomotor stimulants are gender dependent and hormonally sensitive, few studies have examined the possibility that the estrous cycle interacts with drug reinforcement in laboratory animals. The present experiment assessed the effect of the estrous cycle on two aspects of cocaine self-administration behavior: the breaking point on a progressive ratio (PR) schedule and the rate of cocaine intake on a fixed ratio one (FR1) schedule. On the PR schedule, the first lever response produced a drug infusion. Subsequent response requirements escalated with each injection until the behavior extinguished. Breaking points were defined as the final ratio completed. On a FR1 schedule, the estrous cycle had no effect on the rate of drug intake. On a PR schedule, female rats reached higher breaking points during estrus than during other stages of the estrous cycle. Furthermore, female rats displayed higher breaking points than male rats. It appears that the estrous cycle influences an animal's motivation to self-administer cocaine.

Abstract: The distribution of many woodland herbs extends 1000-2000 km in a north- south direction, yet the majority of these species grow clonally, have little recruitment by seed, and possess no obvious mechanism for long-distance seed dispersal. Although aware that woodland herbs disperse poorly, ecologists have tacitly assumed that, given long periods of time, even small dispersal distances would allow woodland herbs to colonize the vast geographic region they now occupy. We examined this assumption for the understory herb Asarum canadense. To estimate long-term rates of spread by seed, we calibrated seed- dispersal diffusion models with life history data and with data on seed carries by ants. We supplemented our field observations and modeling results forA. canadensewith a literature survey on the dispersal capabilities of other plant species. Ants transported A. canadense seeds up to 35 m, the largest distance ants are known to move the seeds of any woodland herb. Empirically calibrated diffusion models indicated that over the last 16 000 yr A. canadense should only have traveled 10-11 km from its glacial refugia. In actuality, A. canadense moved hundreds of kilometers during this time. Models that examined the tail of A. canadense's seed-dispersal curve indicated that oc- casional dispersal events had to have a high frequency ($0.001 on a per seed basis) and a large magnitude (dispersal distance .1 km) for A. canadense to have traveled over 200 km in 16 000 yr. The literature survey showed that most woodland herbs and many other forest, desert, coastal, and open-habitat plant species have limited seed-dispersal capabil- ities, similar to those in A. canadense. We conclude that woodland herbs, as well as many other plants, disperse so slowly that there is no documented mechanism by which most of these species could have reached their present geographical range since the last glacial maximum. This suggests that occasional events leading to long-distance dispersal dominate the Holocene colonization of northern temperate forest by woodland herbs, and this, in turn, has implications for issues ranging from the importance of genetic analyses to the structure of metapopulation models.

Abstract: The high-frequency seismic field near the epicenter of a large earth- quake is modeled by subdividing the fault plane into subelements and summing their contributions at the observation point. Each element is treated as a point source with an o92 spectral shape, where co is the angular frequency. Ground-motion contributions from the subsources are calculated using a stochastic model. Attenuation is based on simple geometric spreading in a whole space, coupled with regional anelastic atten- uation (Q operator). The form of the co n spectrum with natural n follows from point shear-dislocation theory with an appropriately chosen slip time function. The seismic moment and comer frequency are the two parameters defining the point-source spectrum and must be linked to the subfanlt size to make the method complete. Two coefficients, Aa and K, provide this link. Assigning a moment to a subfault of specified size introduces the stress parameter, Ao-. The relationship between comer frequency (dislocation growth rate) and fault size is established through the coefficient K, which is inherently nonunique. These two parameters control the number of subsources and the ampli- tudes of high-frequency radiation, respectively. Derivation of the model from shear- dislocation theory reveals the unavoidable uncertainty in assigning ogn spectrum to faults with finite size. This uncertainty can only be reduced through empirical vali- dation. The method is verified by simulating data recorded on rock sites near epicenters of the M8.0 1985 Michoacan (Mexico), the M8.0 1985 Valparaiso (Chile), and the M5.8 1988 Saguenay (Qurbec) earthquakes. Each of these events is among the largest for which strong-motion records are available, in their respective tectonic environ- ments. The simulations for the first two earthquakes are compared to the more de- tailed modeling of Somerville et al. (1991), which employs an empirical source function and represents the effects of crustal structure using the theoretical impulse response. Both methods predict the observations accurately on average. The precision of the methods is also approximately equal; the predicted acceleration amplitudes in our model are generally within 15% of observations. An unexpected result of this study is that a single value of a parameter K provides a good fit to the data at high frequencies for all three earthquakes, despite their different tectonic environments. This suggests a simplicity in the modeling of source processes that was unanticipated.
