Abstract: An important management question today is whether the anticipated economic benefits of Information Technology IT are being realized. In this paper, we consider this problem to be measurement related, and propose and test a new process-oriented methodology for ex post measurement to audit IT impacts on a strategic business unit SBU or profit center's performance. The IT impacts on a given SBU are measured relative to a group of SBUs in the industry. The methodology involves a two-stage analysis of intermediate and higher level output variables that also accounts for industry and economy wide exogenous variables for tracing and measuring IT contributions. The data for testing the proposed model were obtained from SBUs in the manufacturing sector. Our results show significant positive impacts of IT at the intermediate level. The theoretical contribution of the study is a methodology that attempts to circumvent some of the measurement problems in this domain. It also provides a practical management tool to address the question of why or why not certain IT impacts occur. Additionally, through its process orientation, the suggested approach highlights key variables that may require managerial attention and subsequent action.

Abstract: In this paper, we describe a statistical method for 3D object detection. We represent the statistics of both object appearance and "non-object" appearance using a product of histograms. Each histogram represents the joint statistics of a subset of wavelet coefficients and their position on the object. Our approach is to use many such histograms representing a wide variety of visual attributes. Using this method, we have developed the first algorithm that can reliably detect human faces with out-of-plane rotation and the first algorithm that can reliably detect passenger cars over a wide range of viewpoints.

Abstract: An outer-approximation algorithm is presented for solving mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems of a particular class. Linearity of the integer (or discrete) variables, and convexity of the nonlinear functions involving continuous variables are the main features in the underlying mathematical structure. Based on principles of decomposition, outer-approximation and relaxation, the proposed algorithm effectively exploits the structure of the problems, and consists of solving an alternating finite sequence of nonlinear programming subproblems and relaxed versions of a mixed-integer linear master program. Convergence and optimality properties of the algorithm are presented, as well as a general discussion on its implementation. Numerical results are reported for several example problems to illustrate the potential of the proposed algorithm for programs in the class addressed in this paper. Finally, a theoretical comparison with generalized Benders decomposition is presented on the lower bounds predicted by the relaxed master programs.

Abstract: Efficient manipulation of Boolean functions is an important component of many computer-aided design tasks This paper describes a package for manipulating Boolean functions based on the reduced, ordered, binary decision diagram (ROBDD) representation The package is based on an efficient implementation of the if-then-else (ITE) operator A hash table is used to maintain a strong canonical form in the ROBDD, and memory use is improved by merging the hash table and the ROBDD into a hybrid data structure A memory function for the recursive ITE algorithm is implemented using a hash-based cache to decrease memory use Memory function efficiency is improved by using rules that detect when equivalent functions are computed The usefulness of the package is enhanced by an automatic and low-cost scheme for recycling memory Experimental results are given to demonstrate why various implementation trade-offs were made These results indicate that the package described here is significantly faster and more memory-efficient than other ROBDD implementations described in the literature
