Abstract: We report a phase I trial to determine the feasibility of collection, ex vivo culture-expansion and intravneous infusion of human bone marrow-derived progenitor stromal cells (mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs)). Ten milliliter bone marrow samples were obtained from 23 patients with hematologic malignancies in complete remission. Bone marrow mononuclear cells were separated and adherent cells were culture-expanded in vitro for 4-7 weeks. Autologous MPCs were reinfused intravenously and a bone marrow examination repeated 2 weeks later for histologic assessment and in vitro hematopoietic cultures. Patient age ranged from 18 to 68 years and 12 subjects previously had undergone an autologous or syngeneic bone marrow transplant 4-52 months prior to collection of MPCs. A median of 364 x 10(6) nucleated bone marrow cells (range: 103 to 1004 x 10(6)) were used for ex vivo expansion. Median number of MPCs which were obtained after ex vivo culture expansion was 59.0 (range: 1.1 to 347 x 10(6)) representing a median cell doubling of 16,000-fold (13 doublings). Fifteen of 23 patients completed the ex vivo expansion and underwent MPC infusion. Time to infusion of MPCs after collection ranged from 28 to 49 days. Five patients in each of three groups were given 1, 10 and 50 x 10(6) MPCs. No adverse reactions were observed with the infusion of the MPCs. MPCs obtained from cancer patients can be collected, expanded in vitro and infused intravenously without toxicity.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract: Acute heart failure syndromes (AHFS) poses unique diagnostic and management challenges. This syndrome has recently received attention from researchers, clinicians, regulatory agencies, and the pharmaceutical industry. However, there is no consensus on its definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, appropriate therapeutic options, and directions for future research. This document is the result of the First and Second International Workshop on Acute Heart Failure Syndrome that took place in May 2004 and April 2005. At these workshops, a selected group of physician scientists, epidemiologists, clinicians, regulatory and governmental funding agencies, and industry representatives from North and South America and Europe convened to develop a platform for future investigative approaches and management of AHFS. Subsequently, emergency physicians, who play a pivotal role in the early management of AHFS, contributed to this document. AHFS is defined as gradual or rapid change in heart failure (HF) signs and symptoms resulting in a need for urgent therapy. These symptoms are primarily the result of severe pulmonary congestion due to elevated left ventricular (LV) filling pressures (with or without low cardiac output). AHFS can occur in patients with preserved or reduced ejection fraction (EF). Concurrent cardiovascular conditions such as coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension, valvular heart disease, atrial arrhythmias, and/or noncardiac conditions (including renal dysfunction, diabetes, anemia) are often present and may precipitate or contribute to the pathophysiology of this syndrome.1–3 HF hospitalizations have risen steadily, with >1 million in 2004 in the United States4; a similar number has been reported in Europe. Abstract: Responding to controversies about the balance between nature and culture in determining human sexuality, the author proposes that the female sex drive is more malleable than the male in response to sociocultural and situational factors. A large assortment of evidence supports 3 predictions based on the hypothesis of female erotic plasticity: (a) Individual women will exhibit more variation across time than men in sexual behavior, (b) female sexuality will exhibit larger effects than male in response to most specific sociocultural variables, and (c) sexual attitude-behavior consistency will be lower for women than men. Several possible explanations for female erotic plasticity are reviewed, including adaptation to superior male political and physical power, the centrality of female change (from no to yes) as a prerequisite for intercourse, and the idea that women have a milder sex drive than men.

Abstract: Highly efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have been regarded as the core elements in a wide range of renewable energy technologies. Surface engineering of the electrocatalysts is one of the most popular strategies to improve their catalytic activity. Herein, we, for the first time, designed an advanced bi-functional electrocatalyst for the ORR and OER by simultaneously etching and doping a cobalt sulfides–graphene hybrid with NH3-plasma. The graphene supported Co9S8 nanoparticles were prepared (denoted as Co9S8/G) first, followed by the NH3-plasma treatment, which could not only lead to nitrogen doping into both Co9S8 and graphene, but also partially etch the surface of both Co9S8 and graphene. The heteroatom doping could efficiently tune the electronic properties of Co9S8 and graphene, and the surface etching could expose more active sites for electrocatalysis, which can contribute significantly to the enhanced electrocatalytic performance for ORR and OER. The electrochemical results revealed that the etched and N-doped Co9S8/G shows excellent ORR activity, which is close to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst, and great OER activity. The strategy developed here provides a novel and efficient approach to prepare hybrid bi-functional electrocatalysts for ORR and OER.
