A meta-analysis of the role of smoking in inflammatory bowel disease.

Abstract: A relationship between not smoking and ulcerative colitis has been examined in all English reports. This paper evaluates the ulcerative colitis/nonsmoking and the Crohn's disease/smoking association by meta-analysis and against causality criterion for chronic diseases. A review of the literature, meta-analysis of selected studies, and assessment of causality criterion all suggest that not smoking and ulcerative colitis and smoking and Crohn's disease are consistent with a causal relationship. It is not inconceivable that tobacco may contain some substance beneficial to ulcerative colitis patients. Identification of the specific product in tobacco producing a beneficial effect would be a prudent next step in the study of this association. In spite of the findings of this review and analysis, the author finds no justification for health care providers to change the Surgeon General's recommendations on smoking or tobacco use for ulcerative colitis patients specifically.

Curvilinear Effects of Consumer Loyalty Determinants in Relational Exchanges

Abstract: Drawing from need, motivation, and social exchange theories, this study conceptualizes and empirically examines the differential curvilinear effects of multiple determinants of loyalty intentions, including transactional satisfaction, trust, and value for relational exchanges. The authors conceptualize trust as a “motivator,” satisfaction as a “hygiene,” and value as a “bivalent” factor in consumer loyalty mechanisms. Using consumer data on relational exchanges in two different service contexts—retail clothing and nonbusiness airline travel—and accounting for different sources of error—namely, measurement, common method, and response style—the authors empirically investigate the hypothesized mechanisms. The data support the motivator, or the enhancing role of trust, and the hygiene, or the maintaining role of satisfaction, on loyalty intentions in both contexts. The 10 Meter South Pole Telescope

Abstract: .The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a 10 m diameter, wide-field, offset Gregorian telescope with a 966 pixel, multicolor, millimeter-wave, bolometer camera. It is located at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station in Antarctica. The design of the SPT emphasizes careful control of spillover and scattering, to minimize noise and false signals due to ground pickup. The key initial project is a large-area survey at wavelengths of 3, 2, and 1.3 mm, to detect clusters of galaxies via the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect and to measure the small-scale angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The data will be used to characterize the primordial matter power spectrum and to place constraints on the equation of state of dark energy. A second-generation camera will measure the polarization of the CMB, potentially leading to constraints on the neutrino mass and the energy scale of inflation.

In vivo video rate optical coherence tomography.

Abstract: An optical coherence tomography system is described which can image up to video rate. The system utilizes a high power broadband source and real time image acquisition hardware and features a high speed scanning delay line in the reference arm based on Fourier-transform pulse shaping technology. The theory of low coherence interferometry with a dispersive delay line, and the operation of the delay line are detailed and the design equations of the system are presented. Real time imaging is demonstrated in vivo in tissues relevant to early human disease diagnosis (skin, eye) and in an important model in developmental biology (Xenopus laevis).
