Abstract: The occipital condyle (OC) is an important area in craniovertebral surgery, but neither its anatomical features nor the procedures concerning the OC have been detailed yet. The morphological analysis of the structures were made in totally 704 sides of the occipital bones of adult skulls by 3D-Doctor Demo version. The length and width of the OC were found to be 23.9 ± 3.4 (right), 24 ± 3.3 (left) and 11.9 ± 2.3 (right), 10.7 ± 2.3 mm (left), respectively. The mean anterior intercondylar distance and the posterior intercondylar distance were measured as 20.9 ± 3.6 and 43.1 ± 4 mm, respectively. The sagittal intercondylar angle was observed as 68.7 ± 10.6o. The sagittal condylar angle was observed to be 32.9 ± 7.6o and 38.2 ± 7.3o in the right and left, respectively. The head circumference was observed to be 65.6 ± 7.8 and 64.4 ± 7.2 mm in the right and left, respectively. The head area was measured as 231.9 ± 53.3 and 214.9 ± 45.1 mm² in the right and left, respectively. The most common type was oval-like (59.67%), whereas the most unusual one was two-portioned condyle (0.32%). In Pearson correlation analysis, it was significant that a statistically strong relation was noticed between the length and area, and the circumference and area. The findings suggest that the oval type was more successful to work with, while the triangular, circular and two-portioned types were highly risky for the fixation resonance as the surface got quite smaller. As a result, we suggest that by resecting nearly half of the OC, the border of the hypoglossal canal can be involved.

Abstract: Physical characterization and oxidative stability of egg powder microencapsulated by spray drying were studied in this work. The wall material (gelatin, lactose, pullulan, and their mixtures) and liquid egg mixtures were prepared by homogenization at 22,000 rpm for 60 s. The spray drying was carried out at pilot-scale spray dryer (Niro Mobile Minor, Soborg, Denmark). The spray-dried egg powders were analyzed for moisture content, water activity, peroxide value, total cholesterol oxidation products (TCOPs), particle properties, and bulk properties. Using gelatin as wall material resulted in a significant increase in the moisture content and water activity of egg powder during storage and it improved flowability. Egg powders containing pullulan as wall material showed a fibrous structure and had the lowest bulk density. Adding lactose as wall material increased the oxidative stability, which was indicated with lowest peroxide value and TCOPs level of egg powder.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and other common treatment methods used in the process of wound healing in terms of the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In the study, 24 female and 24 male adult Wistar–Albino rats were divided into five groups: (1) the non-wounded group having no incision wounds, (2) the control group having incision wounds, (3) the TENS (2 Hz, 15 min) group, (4) the physiological saline (PS) group and (5) the povidone iodine (PI) group. In the skin sections, interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were assessed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunohistochemical methods. In the non-wounded group, the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α signaling molecules was weaker in the whole tissue; however, in the control group, significant inflammatory response occurred, and strong cytokine expression was observed in the dermis, granulation tissue, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands (P < 0.05). In the TENS group, the decrease in TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 immunoreaction in the skin was significant compared to the other forms of treatment (P < 0.05). Distinctive decreases of pro-inflammatory cytokines observed in the dermis in the TENS group suggest that TENS shortened the healing process by inhibating the inflammation phase.
