TL;DR: In this paper, modified couple stress theory (MCSTT) was used to see the effects of being micro-sized, and the nonlinear equations of motion for the fluid conveying micro beam were obtained by using Hamilton's principle.
Abstract: In this study, fluid conveying continuous media was considered as micro beam. Unlike the classical beam theory, the effects of shear stress on micro-structure's dynamic behavior not negligible. Therefore, modified couple stress theory (MCST) were used to see the effects of being micro-sized. By using Hamilton's principle, the nonlinear equations of motion for the fluid conveying micro beam were obtained. Micro beam was considered as resting on an elastic foundation. The obtained equations of motion were became independence from material and geometric structure by nondimensionalization. Approximate solutions of the system were achieved with using the multiple time scales method (a perturbation method). The effects of micro-structure, spring constant, the occupancy rate of micro beam, the fluid velocity on natural frequency and solutions were researched. MCST compared with classical beam theory and showed that beam models that based on classical beam theory are not capable of describing the size effects. Co...

TL;DR: It is concluded that intranasal corticosteroids can be used safely for prolonged periods without increasing the risk of ocular hypertension or PSCs.
Abstract: It is possible that corticosteroids administered via nasal spray might reach ocular structures in levels sufficient to provoke an ocular hypertensive response and cause posterior subcapsular cataracts (PSCs) in susceptible individuals. In the present study, 26 patients who had undergone endoscopic sinus surgery were evaluated prospectively with respect to intraocular pressure and PSC formation following the use of nasal steroids for at least three months. Eighteen patients (69%) self-administered 200 micrograms/day of budesonide nasal spray twice daily, and eight patients (31%) self-administered 200 micrograms/day of beclomethasone dipropionate nasal spray twice daily, for a period of three to 19 months (mean 8.8 +/- 3.6 months). Ophthalmologic examination, tonometry, visual field testing and biomicroscopic studies revealed no evidence of ocular hypertension or PSCs during postoperative follow-up. We conclude that intranasal corticosteroids can be used safely for prolonged periods without increasing the risk of ocular hypertension or PSCs.

TL;DR: Results may suggest that disturbance in OT is linked with deficits in metacognition and may interact with other forms of cognitive deficits, interfering with the person's abilities to form a complex and integrated sense of self and others.
Abstract: Many with schizophrenia experiences deficits in social cognition, neurocognition and metacognition. Yet the biological mechanisms which may underpin these cognitive deficits are poorly understood. Two candidate causes of these deficits are disturbances in oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP). To explore this we assessed plasma OT and VP in 34 schizophrenia patients and 31 healthy controls. We also concurrently assessed social cognition using the Reading the Mind from the Eyes test, neurocognition using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and metacognition using the Metacognitive Assessment Scale-Abbreviated. Group comparisons revealed lower plasma OT levels in the schizophrenia group. Plasma VP levels did not differ between groups. Correlations revealed that lower levels of OT were associated with poorer levels of metacognitive functioning in the schizophrenia group but not poorer social cognition or neurocognition. In a stepwise multiple regression, plasma OT level, neurocognition and social cognition contributed uniquely to the prediction of metacognition in the schizophrenia group. Results may suggest that disturbance in OT is linked with deficits in metacognition and may interact with other forms of cognitive deficits, interfering with the person's abilities to form a complex and integrated sense of self and others.
