Abstract: We compared contrast-enhanced T1-weighted and 3D constructive interference in steady state (CISS) sequences for demonstrating possible prognostic factors in hearing-preservation surgery for vestibular schwannoma. We studied 22 patients with vestibular schwannomas having hearing-preservation surgery. Postoperatively six (27%) had a facial palsy and eight (36%) had hearing loss. There was a significant correlation between the size of the tumour and facial palsy (r=-0.72). Both techniques adequately demonstrated all tumours. Involvement of the fundus of the internal auditory canal (IAC) and a small distance between the lateral border of the tumour and the fundus were correlated significantly with hearing loss (r=-0.81 and -0.75, respectively). The 3D-CISS sequence, by virtue of its high contrast resolution was superior to T1-weighted images ( P<0.05) for detection of the fundal involvement. The direction of displacement of the facial nerve did not correlate with facial palsy or hearing loss. We think that 3D-CISS images better show the features influencing surgical outcome, but that contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images are required for diagnosis.

Abstract: Obesity is associated with a number of risk factors, such as hyperlipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, hypertension, and early atherosclerosis. Evidence indicates that atherosclerosis begins in childhood and progresses over decades. In this work, we examined the relationship between cardiovascular risk factors and ultrasonographic signs of subclinical atherosclerosis in 77 obese children and adolescents compared to 40 non-obese healthy peers. Carotis intima media thickness (cIMT), carotid artery compliance (CAC), brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), and established cardiovascular risk factors were studied. In the obese patients, cIMT was significantly increased (0.57 mm vs 0.45 mm, p < 0.001) whereas CAC (1.84% vs 3.29%, p < 0.001) and FMD (9.67 % vs 14.81%, p < 0.001) were significantly decreased. In multiple linear regression analysis, a relation was observed between cIMT, CAC, brachial FMD on one hand, and body mass index (BMI) on the other. Among the lipid anomalies, only hypertriglyceridemia was found to be positively correlated with cIMT. Additionally, we found a significant association between waist circumference (WC) and FMD. These findings indicate that obesity in children is associated with arterial wall alterations and endothelial dysfunction. In hyperlipidemic situations, only hypertriglyceridemia was found to be positively correlated with cIMT. This finding has consistently indicated TG to be a risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. To our knowledge this is the first study to determine the relation between FMD and WC, which is used as a parameter of obesity in childhood.

Abstract: Objective
To examine the performance of screening for Down syndrome based on maternal age, fetal nuchal translucency (NT) and different combinations of the additional ultrasound parameters: nasal bone (NB), tricuspid flow (TF) and ductus venosus (DV)
Methods
Retrospective study at the University of Tuebingen, Germany including women who underwent chorionic villous sampling between 2008 and 2014 Prior to invasive testing, the crown rump length, NT, NB, TF and DV were measured In each case, the added value of the additional markers NB, TF and DV were compared with screening for trisomy 21 based on maternal age (MA) and NT thickness alone
Results
A total of 1916 pregnancies met the inclusion criteria, including 1823 fetuses with a normal karyotype and 93 with trisomy 21 Screening based on MA, fetal NT and one, two and three of the additional ultrasound markers resulted in a detection rate of about 80%, 87% and 94%, respectively for a false positive rate of 3%
Conclusion
Detection rates for trisomy 21 in first trimester ultrasound screening are substantially higher if all three additional markers rather than just one are assessed © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Abstract: Background: Our aim was to evaluate the effect of an intraoperative single dose of retinoic acid (RA) or mitomycin C (MMC) in preventing posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Methods: Twenty-seven rabbits were divided randomly into three groups. RA (250 µg/ml) and MMC (0.04 mg/ml) were given 0.1 ml by hydrosection and 0.9 ml into the capsular bag after phacoemulsification. The third group served as a control group. Three months after intervention PCO was graded clinically. Furthermore, proliferation of lens epithelial cells was evaluated histologically. Results: Two eyes developed corneal edema in the MMC group. On clinical assessment, RA and MMC were significantly effective in preventing PCO compared with controls (P<0.005). On histological analysis, there was significantly reduced proliferative activity on posterior capsules in the treatment groups, in contrast to multilayer cells in the control group. Conclusion: Intraoperative single-dose administration of RA and MMC significantly prevented the development of PCO in rabbit eyes. The optimal biocompatible dosage must be carefully determined by further investigation.
