Abstract: This paper aims at determining the effects of process parameters (cutting speed, feed rate, tool path pattern and depth of cut) on surface roughness and the factor levels with minimum surface roughness in pocket machining. The experiments conducted based on Taguchi’s L27 orthogonal array are assessed with analysis of variance and signal-to-noise ratio. According to this, it is observed that surface roughness correlates negatively with cutting speed and positively with feed rate and cutting depth. Minimum surface roughness is predicted as 0.5413 μm with the cutting speed of 300 m/min, feed rate of 150 mm/min, spiral tool path pattern and 1 mm depth of cut. Finally, confirmation tests verify that Taguchi method achieves the optimization of the system with sufficient accuracy at 95 % confidence level.

Abstract: Erythromelanosis follicularis faciei et colli is characterized by well-demarcated erythema, hyperpigmentation, and follicular papules. Since the original description, it has seldom been reported in the literature. We present two adolescent brothers who had this disorder associated with keratosis pilaris on the shoulders and the extensor surfaces of the arms. Dermatologic examination found brown-red pigmentation, erythema, and follicular papules on both maxillary, preauricular regions, and the cheeks. The lesions of the older brother were more prominent. Histopathologic examination of skin biopsy specimens taken from both brothers revealed hyperpigmentation of the basal layer, follicular plugging, dermal vascular dilatation and congestion, and perivascular inflammatory infiltration. We suggest that the coexistence of these two conditions in brothers implies a genetic inheritance and a possible relationship between the disorders.

Abstract: Scleroderma is a connective tissue disorder characterised by excessive accumulation of collagen in the skin and internal organs. The most likely explanation for this process is local activation of collagen synthesis from fibroblasts. Our intention was to elucidate whether TGF-β3 and mast cells play a pathogenic role in abnormal connective tissue formation in scleroderma. In this study, skin biopsies from 20 patients with scleroderma and five from healthy individuals were studied by an indirect immunoperoxidase technique to determine the immunoreactivity of TGF-β3 in the dermis. In addition, skin samples were stained with toluidine blue to count the number of mast cells in scleroderma, and tissues were examined under the electron microscope to evaluate the ultrastructural changes. Increased TGF-β3 immunoreactivities were detected in the dermis in the patient's skin, suggesting the presence of a subpopulation responsible for the increased collagen production. Mast cell counts in the skin of patients with scleroderma were significantly greater (19.2 ± 4.1/unit) than those of normal controls (4.4 ± 1.2/unit). Ultrastructural observations indicated that there is a close relationship between the mast cells and fibroblasts. These results suggest that fibrosis in scleroderma could evolve through the activation of fibroblasts and the regulatory mechanisms that appear to modulate the behavior of these cells with respect to collagen production.

Abstract: In this paper, a new robust integral of signum of error (RISE) feedback type controller is designed for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems. Unlike the previous versions of RISE feedback type controllers, the proposed controller does not require prior knowledge of upper bounds of the vector containing the uncertainties of the dynamical system plus desired system dynamics (and their derivatives) for the control gain selection. The aforementioned enhancement is made possible via the design of a time-varying compensation gain as opposed to a constant gain used in previous RISE feedback type controllers. Asymptotic stability of the error signals and the boundedness of the closed-loop system signals are ensured via Lyapunov based arguments. Numerical simulation studies are presented to illustrate the viability of the proposed method.
