TL;DR: In this paper, the plasmon resonance peak characteristic of copper nanoparticles was measured using the RBS data and nonlinear optical absorption from the Cu nanoparticles were found to be compatible with the semiconductor aspects of ZnO.
Abstract: Copper nanoparticles have been formed in a zinc oxide (ZnO) substrate by Cu implantation at 160 keV. The implant layer shows amorphised behaviour as monitored by the RBS data and optical absorption indicates the surface plasmon resonance peak characteristic of copper nanoparticles. There is nonlinear optical absorption from the Cu nanoparticles. There are numerous changes in the luminescence responses which include a variety of green and yellow emission bands. During excitation there were changes in the cathodoluminescence intensity and lifetime influenced by the surface events, including some unusual features, which may be considered in terms of interactions with surface water and ice. Radioluminescence signals oscillate between the normal emission bands and the wide red line emission from free Zn. Overall ZnO is, therefore, an unexpectedly interesting host for dispersed Cu nanoparticles, not least because the optical features may be compatible with the semiconductor aspects of ZnO.

TL;DR: Investigating the possible synergistic cytotoxic/apoptotic effects of a novel combination of docetaxel and TQ in DU-145 hormone- and drug-refractory prostate cancer cells found that the combination resulted in a significant synergism cytotoxicy and apoptosis as compared to any single agent alone, in a dose-dependent manner.
Abstract: The treatment of castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) still remains as an important challenge of daily oncology practice. Docetaxel significantly prolongs overall survival in men with CRPC. Thymoquinone (TQ), one of the flavonoid compounds isolated from Nigealla sativa, has been shown to possess cytotoxic activity against a variety of cancer cell lines. The aim of the study was to investigate the possible synergistic cytotoxic/apoptotic effects of a novel combination, docetaxel and TQ in DU-145 hormone- and drug-refractory prostate cancer cells and their effects on PI3K and ERK signaling pathways. We observed that the combination of docetaxel and TQ resulted in a significant synergistic cytotoxicy and apoptosis as compared to any single agent alone, in a dose-dependent manner. It was found that viability of the combination treated cells was not significantly changed in the presence of LY294002 as compared to inhibitor treated cells. However, in the presence of FR180204, viability of combination treated cells was significantly decreased as compared to inhibitor treated cells. In conclusion, cytotoxic effect of the docetaxel and TQ combination is correlated with the block of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in DU-145 cells. Therefore, this combination strategy may be an alternative approach for the challenging era of daily oncologic practice. Also, the combination of docetaxel and TQ might allow a reduction in docetaxel doses and diminish adverse effects of docetaxel while maintaining the therapeutic effect in patients with CRPC.

TL;DR: The first observation of $Z$ boson production in proton-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per proton nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5~\text{TeV}$ is presented in this article.
Abstract: The first observation of $Z$ boson production in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per proton-nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5~\text{TeV}$ is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $1.6~\text{nb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $Z$ candidates are reconstructed from pairs of oppositely charged muons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 and transverse momenta above $20~\text{GeV}/c$. The invariant dimuon mass is restricted to the range $60-120~\text{GeV}/c^2$. The $Z$ production cross-section is measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} \sigma_{Z\to\mu^+\mu^-}(\text{fwd})&=&13.5^{+5.4}_{-4.0}\text{(stat.)}\pm1.2\text{(syst.)}~\text{nb} \end{eqnarray*} in the direction of the proton beam and \begin{eqnarray*} \sigma_{Z\to\mu^+\mu^-}(\text{bwd}) & =&10.7^{+8.4}_{-5.1}\text{(stat.)}\pm1.0\text{(syst.)}~\text{nb} \end{eqnarray*} in the direction of the lead beam, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.
