TL;DR: It was asserted that serum magnesium and zinc levels may play an important role in the pathophysiology of FM.
Abstract: We examined the association between serum trace elements and clinical findings such as number of sensitive tender points, severity of fatigue and functional status in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). Thirty-two patients diagnosed as having FM according to the ACR 1990 criteria and 32 normal healthy controls (NHC) were included in this study. The demographic data, disease duration, number of tender points and accompanying symptoms (fatigue, sleep disorders, headache, paresthesia, irritable bowel syndrome, sicca symptoms, Raynaud’s phenomena) of the patients were noted. Visual analog scale (10 cm) was implemented to estimate daily severity of pain and fatigue. Fibromyalgia impact questionnaire was used for functional assessment. Serum selenium (μg/dL) and serum zinc (μg/dL) levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrometer. Serum magnesium (mmol/L) level was measured by the original kits of Abbott Aeroset auto-analyzer. The mean age of patients in FM group and NHC were calculated as 42.9 (SD = 7.7) years and 41.3 (SD = 9.7) years, respectively. Serum levels of zinc (P = 0.001) and magnesium (P = 0.002) were significantly decreased by FM groups, whereas there was no considerable difference with selenium levels of both groups (P > 0.05). Association between serum zinc level and number of tender points (P = 0.008) and that between fatigue and magnesium level (P = 0.003) was found as meaningful. According to the results of this study, it was asserted that serum magnesium and zinc levels may play an important role in the pathophysiology of FM.

TL;DR: The results showed that long-term exercise decreased RT and increased VO2max, T, and GH in elderly males; elevated serum T and GH levels may be advantageous for brain functions.
Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of regular exercise on maximum oxygen uptake capacity (VO2max), reaction time (RT), testosterone (T), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in athletes compared to sedentary controls. VO2max, RT, T, GH, and IGF-I levels were 31.2 +/- 6.2 ml/min/kg, 106.7 +/- 23.2 s, 8.3 +/- 1.3 ng/mL, 1.6 +/- 0.7 ng/mL, 106.5 +/- 27.0 ng/mL in master athlete group and 18.8 +/- 5.1 ml/min/kg, 148.3 +/- 39.3 s, 5.4 +/- 1.7 ng/mL, 0.8 +/- 0.3 ng/mL, 90.2 +/- 23.8 ng/mL in sedentary control group, respectively. The differences between regularly exercising males and the control group of sedentary males were found to be statistically significant. The results showed that long-term exercise decreased RT and increased VO2max, T, and GH in elderly males; elevated serum T and GH levels may be advantageous for brain functions.

TL;DR: In this paper, defatted grape seed powder and defatted poppy seeds were incorporated into biscuits at a level of 5%. Some physicochemical and sensory characteristics were evaluated during 5 months storage period.
Abstract: Blueberry, defatted grape seed powder and defatted poppy seeds were incorporated into biscuits at a level of 5%. Some physicochemical and sensory characteristics were evaluated during 5 months storage period. Diameter, a* (−a = greenness, +a = redness) values, ash, fat, crude fiber, Mg and Ca contents increased, while L* (lightness), b* (−b = blueness, +b = yellowness) values decreased significantly (P < 0.05). A significant type of fortification agent × storage time interaction (P < 0.05) existed for all physicochemical parameters analyzed. Defatted poppy seed was the most effective agent for preventing increased peroxide values, whereas defatted grape seed powder addition decreased free fatty acid formation better than blueberry and defatted poppy seeds. All fortification agents increased the total phenolic content of biscuits. Biscuits having 5% blueberry exhibited a high percentage of antioxidant activity. Sensory evaluation results revealed that fortificated biscuits cannot be consumed after 5 months. Practical Applications As the relationship between nutrition and some chronic diseases have been established, the number of research and development studies focusing on functional foods has increased rapidly. Antioxidants became popular because of their positive effects on human health. Grape seed, a by-product of the grape-processing industry, is known as a strong free radical scavenger. Poppy seeds are generally used for their high oil content. Tocopherols found in poppy seeds have strong antioxidative properties. Blueberries, rich in anthocyanins, are widely consumed in different countries. These three botanical ingredients can be used as inexpensive antioxidant sources in snack foods such as biscuits and cookies.
