TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the Pareto property is inconsistent with nondictatorship for social choice rules defined on two-dimensional choice spaces, and they considered applications of this result in higher dimensions.
Abstract: We establish that the Pareto property is inconsistent with nondictatorship for social choice rules defined on two-dimensional choice spaces. In addition, we consider applications of this result in higher dimensions.

29 Aug 2017TL;DR: In this paper, comparative space-time trajectories of 79 subjects of the Russian Federation in 1995-2013 indicate an overall increase in inequality, and enable the classification of areas into two unequal groups.
Abstract: Analysis of the comparative space–time trajectories of 79 subjects of the Russian Federation in 1995–2013 indicates an overall increase in inequality, and enables the classification of areas into two unequal groups. The first includes 80% of Russian regions with below-average gross regional product per capita (GRPPC). These regions have moved closer together, with most growing slower than average. Their development indicates a strong degree of path dependence. The second is a small group of high GRPPC regions that are very diverse and whose development was characterized by considerable instability. Identification and interpretation of these trends plays an important role in the design of effective policies for regional social–economic development.

TL;DR: In this paper, a distinction is made between the rule of law and democracy, defined as the ability to ensure order based on legal rules; it is measured by the rule-of-law, investors' risk and corruption indices.
Abstract: There are two innovations as compared to the previous literature on democratization and growth. First, not only the level of democracy is taken into account, but also changes in this level in the 1970s-1990s as measured by the political rights indices of the Freedom House. Second, the distinction is made between the rule of law and democracy, the rule of law being defined as the ability to ensure order based on legal rules; it is measured by the rule of law, investors’ risk and corruption indices. It is found that democratization in countries with strong rule of law (liberal democracies) stimulates economic growth, whereas in countries with poor rule of law (illiberal democracies) democratization undermines growth. In illiberal democracies institutions are weaker, shadow economy is larger and macroeconomic policy is less prudent.

TL;DR: In this article, the existence of Chichilnisky rules in the framework of infinite populations is investigated, where the existence depends on a topology on the set of profiles and a group of permutations of the participants.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was proved that a polytope of non-zero width in the direction of a straight line is the Minkowski sum of a parallelotope of width zero and a segment of this line.
Abstract: In 1959, Venkov introduced a concept of polytope of non-zero width in the direction of a subspace and studied parallelotopes of non-zero width. In the present paper properties of a parallelotope of non-zero width in the direction of a straight line are investigated. In particular, it is proved that a parallelotope of non-zero width in the direction of a straight line is the Minkowski sum of a parallelotope of width zero and a segment of this line. Necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring that the sum of a parallelotope and a line segment is again a parallelotope are presented.
