TL;DR: A faster version of Otsu's method for improving the efficiency of computation for the optimal thresholds of an image by determining the modified between-class variance by accessing a look-up table is quicker than that by performing mathematical arithmetic operations.
Abstract: Otsu reference proposed a criterion for maximizing the between-class variance of pixel intensity to perform picture thresholding. However, Otsu's method for image segmentation is very time-consuming because of the inefficient formulation of the be- tween-class variance. In this paper, a faster version of Otsu's method is proposed for improving the efficiency of computation for the optimal thresholds of an image. First, a criterion for maximizing a modified between-class variance that is equivalent to the criterion of maximizing the usual between-class variance is proposed for image segmen- tation. Next, in accordance with the new criterion, a recursive algorithm is designed to efficiently find the optimal threshold. This procedure yields the same set of thresholds as the original method. In addition, the modified between-class variance can be pre-computed and stored in a look-up table. Our analysis of the new criterion clearly shows that it takes less computation to compute both the cumulative probability (zeroth order moment) and the mean (first order moment) of a class, and that determining the modified between-class variance by accessing a look-up table is quicker than that by performing mathematical arithmetic operations. For example, the experimental results of a five-level threshold selection show that our proposed method can reduce down the processing time from more than one hour by the conventional Otsu's method to less than 107 seconds.

TL;DR: This study takes a meta-analysis approach to systematically reviewing the literature, thus providing a more comprehensive analysis and synthesis of 164 studies from 2003 to 2010, finding that most studies of mobile learning focus on effectiveness, followed by mobile learning system design, and surveys and experiments were used as the primary research methods.
Abstract: Two previous literature review-based studies have provided important insights into mobile learning, but the issue still needs to be examined from other directions such as the distribution of research purposes. This study takes a meta-analysis approach to systematically reviewing the literature, thus providing a more comprehensive analysis and synthesis of 164 studies from 2003 to 2010. Major findings include that most studies of mobile learning focus on effectiveness, followed by mobile learning system design, and surveys and experiments were used as the primary research methods. Also, mobile phones and PDAs are currently the most widely used devices for mobile learning but these may be displaced by emerging technologies. In addition, the most highly-cited articles are found to focus on mobile learning system design, followed by system effectiveness. These findings may provide insights for researchers and educators into research trends in mobile learning.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of annealing environment on the luminescence characteristics of ZnO thin films that were deposited on SiO2/Si substrates by reactive RF magnetron sputtering were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL).
Abstract: The effects of annealing environment on the luminescence characteristics of ZnO thin films that were deposited on SiO2/Si substrates by reactive RF magnetron sputtering were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL). An analysis of the O 1s peak of ZnO film revealed that the concentration of oxygen vacancies increased with the annealing temperature from 600 °C to 900 °C under an ambient atmosphere. The PL results demonstrated that the intensity of green light emission at 523 nm also increased with temperature. Under various annealing atmospheres, the analyses of PL indicated that only one emission peak (523 nm) was obtained, indicating that only one class of defect was responsible for the green luminescence. The green light emission was strongest and the concentration of oxygen vacancies was highest when the ZnO film was annealed in ambient atmosphere at 900 °C. The results in this investigation show that the luminescence mechanism of the emission of green light from a ZnO thin film is associated primarily with oxygen vacancies.

TL;DR: A weather-based hybrid method for 1-day ahead hourly forecasting of PV power output is presented and achieves better prediction accuracy than the simple SVR and traditional ANN methods.
Abstract: To improve real-time control performance and reduce possible negative impacts of photovoltaic (PV) systems, an accurate forecasting of PV output is required, which is an important function in the operation of an energy management system (EMS) for distributed energy resources. In this paper, a weather-based hybrid method for 1-day ahead hourly forecasting of PV power output is presented. The proposed approach comprises classification, training, and forecasting stages. In the classification stage, the self-organizing map (SOM) and learning vector quantization (LVQ) networks are used to classify the collected historical data of PV power output. The training stage employs the support vector regression (SVR) to train the input/output data sets for temperature, probability of precipitation, and solar irradiance of defined similar hours. In the forecasting stage, the fuzzy inference method is used to select an adequate trained model for accurate forecast, according to the weather information collected from Taiwan Central Weather Bureau (TCWB). The proposed approach is applied to a practical PV power generation system. Numerical results show that the proposed approach achieves better prediction accuracy than the simple SVR and traditional ANN methods.

TL;DR: A printed two-multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-antenna system incorporating a neutralization line for antenna port decoupling for wireless USB-dongle applications is proposed and it was found that the antenna port isolation can be effectively improved by removing only 1.5 mm long inwards from the top edge in the small ground portion.
Abstract: A printed two-multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-antenna system incorporating a neutralization line for antenna port decoupling for wireless USB-dongle applications is proposed. The two monopoles are located on the two opposite corners of the system PCB and spaced apart by a small ground portion, which serves as a layout area for antenna feeding network and connectors for the use of standalone antennas as an optional scheme. It was found that by removing only 1.5 mm long inwards from the top edge in the small ground portion and connecting the two antennas therein with a thin printed line, the antenna port isolation can be effectively improved. The neutralization line in this study occupies very little board space, and the design requires no conventional modification to the ground plane for mitigating mutual coupling. The behavior of the neutralization line was rigorously analyzed, and the MIMO characteristics of the proposed antennas was also studied and tested in the reverberation chamber. Details of the constructed prototype are described and discussed in this paper.
