Abstract: Malaria has been endemic in Linzhi Prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) over the past 20 years, especially in Motou County with a highest incidence in the country in recent years. Meteorological factors, such as rainfall, temperature and relative humidity in Motou County were unique compared to other areas in Tibet as well as other parts of China, thus the objective of this work was to analyse the temporal correlation between malaria incidence and meteorological factors in Motou County, in order to seek the particular interventions for malaria control. The meteorological and malaria data during 1986-2009 in Motuo County were studied to analyse the statistical relationship between meteorological data time series and malaria incidence data series. Temporal correlation between malaria incidence and meteorological factors were analyzed using several statistical methods. Spearman correlation analysis was conducted to examine the association between monthly malaria incidence and meteorological variables. Cross-correlation analysis of monthly malaria incidence series and monthly meteorological data time series revealed the time lag(s) of meteorological factors preceding malaria at which the series showed strongest correlation. Multiplicative seasonal auto-regressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) models were used in the cross-correlation analysis with pre-whitening which remove seasonality and auto-correlation of meteorological data series. Differenced data analysis which called inter-annual analysis was carried out to find underlying relationship between malaria data series and meteorological data series. It has been revealed that meteorological variables, such as temperature, relative humidity and rainfall were the important environmental factors in the transmission of malaria. Spearman correlation analysis demonstrated relative humidity was greatest relative to malaria incidence and the correlation coefficient was 0.543(P 0.4) and lagging zero to two months behind temperature and relative humidity (r > 0.5) by the cross-correlation. Correlations were weaker with pre-whitening than without. The cross-correlograms between malaria incidence and various meteorological variables were entirely different. It was fluctuated randomly for temperature but with trend for the other two factors, which showed positive correlated to malaria when lag was from 0 to 5 months and negative from 6 to 12 months. Besides, the inter-annual analysis showed strong correlation between differenced annual malaria incidence and differenced meteorological variables (annual average maximum temperature, annual average relative humidity and annual average rainfall). The correlations coefficients were -0.668 (P < 0.01), 0.451(P < 0.05) and 0.432(P < 0.05), respectively. Meteorological variables play important environmental roles in malaria transmission in Motou County. Relative humidity was the greatest influence factors, which affected the mosquito survival directly. The relationship between malaria incidence and rainfall was complex and it was not directly and linearly. The lags of temperature and relative humidity were similar and smaller than that of rainfall. Since the lags of meteorological variables affecting malaria transmission were short, it was difficult to do accurate long-term malaria incidence prediction using meteorological variables.

Abstract: RATIONALE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) has attracted increasing attention due to its common occurrence and worldwide distribution. METHODS: Direct-infusion positive and negative ion electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (DI-ESI()-FTICR MS) was applied to analyze the serum metabolites from 52 CRC patients and 52 healthy controls. Metabolites whose inter-group intensities were determined to be statistically significant by univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were further identified by a combination of the Human Metabolome Database, accurate mass measurement, isotopic abundance distribution simulation, and tandem mass spectrometry. Orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), basedonthe data from DI-ESI()-FTICRMS,revealeda remarkable discrimination among early stage patients, late stage patients, and healthy controls. RESULTS: A total of 15 differentially expressed metabolites were identified and categorized into four lipid classes. Each lipid class demonstrated specific changing trends in CRC progression. Biomarker panel 1 containing palmitic amide, oleamide, hexadecanedioic acid, octadecanoic acid, eicosatrienoic acid, LPC(18:2), LPC(20:4), LPC(22:6), myristic acid and LPC(16:0) achieved excellent diagnostic accuracy with area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.991, a sensitivity of 0.981 and a specificity of 1.000 for differentiating early stage patients from healthy controls, which was better than the carcinoembryonic antigen biomarker. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that the consideration of CRC stages would be necessary in diagnostic biomarker discovery, as well as that attention should be paid to the facile loss of methyl chloride from the [M+Cl] – form of LPC(16:0)

Abstract: Peptides are rarely reported from Chinese Baijiu (Chinese liquor) because they are often present in very low concentrations in the complex matrix. A tetrapeptide, Ala-Lys-Arg-Ala (AKRA), was recently identified by high-performance liquid chromatography and quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (HPLC-Q-TOF-MS) from sesame flavor-type Baijiu at a concentration of 8.497 ± 0.753 μg/L (P > 0.05), and this tetrapeptide showed preventive effects against 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropanimidamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. The cellular antioxidant activity assay results showed that AKRA protected AAPH-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Pretreatment of the cells for 2 h with AKRA (0.38-1.50 mg/mL) caused strong intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities and prevented a decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) and increases in oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and malondialdehyde (MDA). In addition, AKRA treatment prevented significant decreases in glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) induced by AAPH. Thus, AKRA treatment ameliorated AAPH-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. This study will be important for the design and regulation of functional Baijiu production.

Abstract: From September 2014 to March 2015, 23 outbreaks of norovirus (NoV) acute gastroenteritis occurred in Jiangsu, China. Partial sequencing of the NoV capsid gene suggested that 16 of the 23 outbreaks were related to a new GII.17 variant. This variant was first detected in sporadic specimens in October 2014, and became predominant in February 2015. Analysis of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), and complete capsid including the protruding domain P2 sequences confirmed this GII.17 variant as distinct from previously identified GII variants.
