TL;DR: In comparison with Caucasians, the relative frequencies of rare alleles (Del, X+ and E-) were found to be statistically lower in Han Chinese and the Del and X+ alleles were associated with significantly lower plasma level of HDL-C in CHD patients.

TL;DR: Cervices from routine, low-risk hysterectomies in predominately middle-aged women have an extremely low index of cancer-associated HPVs.

TL;DR: It is suggested that 3' VNTR-B allele might be involved in the development of coronary atherosclerosis, presumably through their influences on lipid metabolism.

TL;DR: Results show that accumbens was resistant to both aging and anoxia, the mechanism of which is discussed.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of aging and anoxia on the nucleus accumbens. METHODS The number of neurons in nucleus accumbens and caudate nucleus in 35 patients over 65 and 35 under 65 years, all without neurological or psychiatric disease were counted. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between the number of neurons in the accumbens in the two groups, but there was a decrease in the number of neurons in the elderly group. There was no reduction in volume of the neuronal nucleoli of the accumbens measured in 12 elderly patients compared to controls. These data suggest a sparing of the accumbens from changes associated with aging. There was relative preservation of the nucleus accumbens in 3 patients with anoxic encephalopathy. CONCLUSIONS These results show that accumbens was resistant to both aging and anoxia, the mechanism of which is discussed.

TL;DR: The results showed that the average prevalence of DM and IGT was 3.63% and 4.19% respectively, standardized by census 1990 in Beijing, and it was increased with age, and no sex difference in the prevalence was found.
Abstract: To prevent the development of DM in susceptible individuals, 29859 subjects, aged from 30 to 64 years, from 32 units of the Company were studied by using WHO protocal and diagnostic criteria. The results showed that the average prevalence of DM and IGT was 3.63% and 4.19% respectively, standardized by census 1990 in Beijing, and it was increased with age. No sex difference in the prevalence of DM was found, but the prevalence of IGT was higher in females (5.55%) than in males. The obesity, overweight, positive DM family history and giant baby history, as well as high daily intake of protein were closely related to the prevalence of the disease. Smoking was in effective.

TL;DR: It is suggested that c-fos is in different functional states at acute and chronic stages of epileptogenesis induced by KA, which indicates that Qingyangshen (QYS), a traditional Chinese medicine with antiepileptic property, had therapeutic effect on kainic acid induced experimental seizures.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the inflammation of colon mucosa is a common phenomenon in the elderly and the correlation with geriatric microecology is studied.
Abstract: AIMS To study the histological appearance of colon mucosa in the elderly.METHODS Mucosa biopsies of colon from 150 asymptomatic healthy persons over 60 years old were histopathologically reviewed.RESULTS The lesions of the colon mucosa included changes of numbers of colon glands, various inflammative cells infiltration, phagocytosis and edema or fibrosis.CONCLUSIONS Considering the various histopathological abnormal appearance of colon mucosa in the elderly and the correlation with geriatric microecology, the authors conclude that the inflammation of colon mucosa is a common phenomenon in the elderly.

TL;DR: Positive neurons in the nucleus accumbens were more abundant than in the caudate and putamen and related to the presence of a large number of NADPH-diaphorase positive neurons.
Abstract: Background In order to explain the mechanism for the sparing of the nucleus accumbens in several pathologic conditions, the accumbens, caudate and putamen were examined in an experimental model. Methods The neurons in these regions from twenty adult rats were stained for the enzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH-diaphorase) and quantified. Results Positive neurons in the nucleus accumbens were more abundant than in the caudate and putamen. Conclusions Since these neurons have been shown to be resistant to ischemia and degeneration, it is suggested that the mechanism for the sparing of the nucleus accumbens is related to the presence of a large number of NADPH-diaphorase positive neurons.
