Abstract: A 2-D systolic array algorithm for the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is presented. It is based on the inverse discrete Fourier transform (DFT) version of the Goertzel algorithm via Horner's rule. This array requires N cells and multipliers, takes square root N+2 clock cycles to produce a complete N-point DCT, and is able to process a continuous stream of data sequences. >

TL;DR: The disease entity might come to an end in three years after the first prevalent year, however, the spores must be strictly prevented because they could be infective in the water for one year.
Abstract: In an attempt to develop prophylactic and therapeutic measures of the intestinal giant-cystic disease caused by Thelohanellus kitauei in the Israel carp, Cyprinus carpio nudus, pathological observations were conducted upon the carps which were hatched in May 1988 and raised in a net cage fish farm at the Soyang lake, managed by Horim Fisheries for the period of 21 months with 1-2 months interval. After a gross inspection of the carps, necropsy was carried out periodically in order to clarify the pathological changes in various internal organs and muscular tissues. Also, the prevalence of the disease was checked during the period from 1988 to 1990. Gross inspections revealed that the infected carps showed some degree of fading in body and gill color, back-emaciation symptoms, reddish anus accompanying erosion and relaxation and pot-belly, as well as discharge of yellowish white mucoid material from the anus. However, most carps died eventually of intestinal obstruction. Other significant necropsy findings included cyst formation of various size in the intestinal mucosa, ascites, anemic condition through internal organs and muscular tissues, hyperemia and dilation of intestines with decreased tension, thinness and fragility, and full contents of semi-fluid or yellowish white mucoid material in the intestinal canals. Based on the morphological characteristics of the spores found in the cysts, parasitic location in the intestines, macro- and microscopic findings of the lesions, the parasites were identified as Thelohanellus kitauei Egusa et Nakajima, 1981. Although monthly changes of water temperature were distinct, the extrusion rates of the polar filaments of the spores stayed constant throughout the year with an exception of a lower rate in July. The lesions initiated from mucosa and submucosa in early July became large swellings and then complete mature forms following the peracute course. From late August the upper cysts were gradually opened and most of the spores were dispersed from anus into the surrounding water through December but only a few lasted until next April. The cysts were completely recovered until next September. Comparing the incidence and prevalence of the disease by year tremendous infection and death rates were checked in the first prevalent year, 1988, but the rates were significantly decreased in the second year, and showed an almost normal status in the third year, 1990. As the above summarized results showed, the disease entity might come to an end in three years after the first prevalent year, however, the spores must be strictly prevented because they could be infective in the water for one year.

Abstract: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis with protean clinical manifestations. Its diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion and is confirmed by isolation of the organism or, more commonly, by serologic tests. In the fall of 1987, after severe flooding, we saw 93 patients with leptospirosis, confirmed by a microagglutination test. Thirteen percent of the patients had no clinical or laboratory findings except fever and headache, but the rest had mild to severe manifestations. Jaundice, renal failure, and aseptic meningitis were not common, but pulmonary symptoms, when present, were striking. The mortality rate was 5%. The main cause of death was asphyxiation due to massive hemoptysis from pulmonary hemorrhage and acute respiratory failure.

TL;DR: Three bounded deviation joint path (BDJP) algorithms which generate only enough intermediate knots, sampled from a smooth Cartesian path, for piecewise cubic polynomial joint trajectories are presented.
Abstract: Presented are three bounded deviation joint path (BDJP) algorithms which generate only enough intermediate knots, sampled from a smooth Cartesian path, for piecewise cubic polynomial joint trajectories. The first algorithm is basically the one proposed by R.H. Taylor (1979), and it is based on position transformations. The second algorithm utilizes inverse velocity transformations, and direct velocity transformations are used in the third algorithm. The proposed BDJP algorithms are aimed to be used in process applications of industrial robots, such as arc welding and contour grinding, in which the desired Cartesian paths are smooth free-formed curves and it is necessary to keep the manipulator acceptably close to the desired path. >

TL;DR: The spores suspended with Tyrode's solution, frozen at -70 degrees C and thawed at 5 degrees C, showed the highest rate of extrusion of the polar filament, in the case of frozen spores, and the extrusion rates during heating tend to become higher in accordance with the increase of frozen period.
Abstract: In a basic attempt to develop the prophylactic and therapeutic measures on intestinal giantcystic disease of the Israel carp, C), prinks carpio nudum, the effects of physical and chemical factors on viability or survival of the spores of Thelchcnellus kiteuei were checked in vitro by means of extrusion test on the polar filament. When the fresh spores suspended with 0.45% and 0.9% scdium chloride solution and distilled water were laid at and for short terms, the extrusion rates increased until the 3rd day, meanwhile when son;e of them were suspended with Tyrode's solution at the rates increased gradually until the 8th day. Viabilities of the spores suspended with 0.9% saline and added antibiotics to the suspension at for long terms lasted for 997 days and 1, 256 days (presumed values) at maximum, respectively. The spores suspended with distilled water at for long terms survived 152.4 days, but the spores suspended with Tyrode's solution at for long terms showed almost the same viable pattern as early freezing stages up to 780 days. The spores suspended with Tyrode's solution, frozen at and thawed at , showed the highest rate of extrusion of the polar filament. In the case of frozen spores, the extrusion rates during heating tend to become higher in accordance with the increase of frozen period, and the critical points of 180 day-frozen spores to be killed were generally 78.5 hr. at , 23.4 hr. at , 189.1 min. at or 10.5 min. at . The longer the spores were frozen, the more time was needed for the death of spores after thawing; 20 days-17.4 days, 100 days-33.2 days, and 400 days-37.8 days. The longer the spores were frozen, the more time was needed for the death of spores at a conventional when they were dried air drying condition, 540 days-23.5 days, 160 days-21.0 days, and 20 days-14.4 days. On the other hand, the longer the spores were frozen, the more spores were dead rapidly when they were irradiated with 10W UV-ray; 100 days-26.0 hr, 300 days-21.9 hr, and 540 days-13.9 hr. The time needed for killing 200 days-frozen spores by various disinfectants at 1, 000 ppd was 5.2 min. by calcium oxide, 10.4 min. by potassium permanganate, 27.8 min. by malachite green and 14.3 hr. by formalin. Transient inhibitory effects of the extrusion of the polar filament were observed by various antiprotozoal and antifungal agents in the descending order of ketoconazole. metronidasole and dapsone. The above results presume that full drying, followed by spraying CaO and maintaining sunny condition for a few days on the concrete bottoms of knish farm may be an effective method for the prevention of intestinal giant.cystic disease.

TL;DR: A simple 1-D and 2-D systolic array for realizing the discrete cosine transform (DCT) based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) fo an input sequence are presented.
Abstract: in this paper, simple 1-D and 2-D systolic array for realizing the discrete cosine transform (DCT) based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) fo an input sequence are presented. The proposed arrays are obtained by a simple modified DFT (MDFT) and an inverse DFT (IDFT) version of the Goertzel algorithm combined with Kung's approach. The 1-D array requiresN cells, one multiplier and takesN clock cycles to produce a completeN-point DCT. The 2-D array takes √N clock cycles, faster than the 1-D array, but the area complexity is larger. A continuous flow of input data is allowed and no idle time is required between the input sequences.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the visual surface brightness method to determine the radii of seven dwarf Cepheids and derived theoretical and empirical relations with the Kurucz model atmospheres.
Abstract: In order to determine the radii of dward Cepheids by applying the visual surface brightness method, the empirical relationship betweenF V and (b−y) was derived. Seventeen stars of spectral type A to F where both angular diameters anduvbyβ photometric data are available were selected from the literature. A theoretical [F V , (b−y)] relation was derived by using the Kurucz model atmospheres. It was found that the theoretical relation is strongly dependent upon metallicity and surface gravity. To demonstrate that the visual surface brightness method is an effective way to determine the radii of dwarf Cepheids, both theoretical and empirical relations were applied to seven dwarf Cepheids. The most reliable result was obtained for AD CMi where the quality of the radial velocity data is superior.

TL;DR: The dehydriding kinetics of the Mg 2 Ni-Ni-Ni (2) system at temperatures between 553 and 593 K under hydrogen pressures from 0.8 to 3.2 bar were studied in this paper.
Abstract: The dehydriding kinetics of the Mg 2 Ni-Ni ( 2 system is studied at temperatures between 553 and 593 K under hydrogen pressures from 0.8 to 3.2 bar. In the temperature range from 553 to 563 K the nucleation of α-solid solution of hydrogen in Mg 2 Ni is found to be the rate-controlling step for the dehydriding reaction. In the temperature range from 573 to 593 K the rate-controlling steps are Knudsen flow and ordinary gaseous diffusion of hydrogen molecules through pores, interparticle channels and cracks.

TL;DR: A case of acute renal failure associated with dermatomyositis and colon cancer in which the renal necropsy showed a typical acute tubular necrosis associated with nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis is described.
Abstract: Sung Kyew Kang, MD, Department of Internal Medicine, Chonbuk National University Medical School, Chonju, Chonbuk 560-182 (Korea) Dear Sir, Dermatomyositis is a collagen disease characterized by a nonpurulent polymyositis, often accompanied by dermatitis and localized edema. When skin lesions are absent, the condition is referred to as polymyositis. The kidneys are generally spared in dermatomyositis. A few cases of acute renal failure in dermatomyositis have been reported [1–4]. This report describes a case of acute renal failure associated with dermatomyositis and colon cancer in which the renal necropsy showed a typical acute tubular necrosis associated with nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis. Case Report A 49-year-old male patient was admitted with anuria, and proximal muscle weakness. He had had surgery for colon cancer 3 years earlier. The specimen obtained showed poorly differentiated aden-ocarcinoma. On admission he appeared acutely ill. ‘Heliotrope rash’ and eyelid edema were noted on his face. There was no rash on any other part of the body. Neurologic examination showed marked weakness and hypotonia of proximal muscles, especially in the shoulders. Biceps, triceps and knee jerk were hypoactive. Sensation and superficial reflexes were normal. He was anuric. The laboratory findings revealed Hb 10.5 g/dl; WBC 6,900/mm3 with differential count showing neutrophils 75%, lymphocytes 15%. ESR was 116 mm/h. Serum Na was 140 mEq/1, K 7.0 mEq/1, P 4.0 mg/dl, uric acid 11.8 mg/dl, albumin 2.9 g/dl and globulin 3.0 g/dl. Serum creatine kinase was 144 U/l, lactic dehydrogenase 203 U/l, SGOT 265 U/l, SGPT113 U/l. BUN was 84 mg/dl and creatinine was 13.9 mg/dl. A skin biopsy of the rash on the face revealed flattening of the rete ridge and liquefactive degeneration of basal cell layer. A biopsy of the deltoid muscle showed edema between muscle fibers, variable diameter of muscle fibers, massive fiber necrosis, and perivascular infiltration of acute and chronic inflammatory cells. Electromyogram revealed myopathic findings compatible with dermatomyositis. Computed tomographic scanning of abdomen showed extensive obstructive uropathy in both midureters due to retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy but no evidence of liver metastasis. He had hemodialysis 3 times via subclavian catheter but refused further treatment. Two weeks later the patient died of uremia and sepsis with pneumonia. A renal necropsy performed just after death revealed focal, severe necrosis of the tubular epithelium with pigmented casts in the lumens. Interstitial tissue

TL;DR: The differentiation pattern of vascular cambium in the first internode of Acer sac charinum does not resemble that of Acer pseudoplatanus in the same genus because the ray initials originate from the segmentation of long cells in the later species.
Abstract: Studies were conducted on developmental anatomy in order to elucidate the differentiation pattern of vascular cambial initials in the first internode of Acer saccharinum. The procambium is transformed from an early homogeneous structure composed of short cells into a heterogeneous structure later having long and short cells. In the transformation process, some cells are elongating while the other cells form axial strands by repeated transverse divisions. The long cells with tapering ends differentiate into cambial fusiform initials and the short cells in axial strands into ray initials. The differentiation pattern of vascular cambium in the first internode of Acer sac charinum does not resemble that of Acer pseudoplatanus in the same genus because the ray initials originate from the segmentation of long cells in the later species.
