TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship between culture, personality, and deception in a simulated international management negotiation at multiple levels of analysis and found that cultural collectivism was positively related to reported use of deception in negotiations, and to greater emotional reactions (i.e. guilt, shame, and disgust).
Abstract: This article investigates the relationship between culture, personality, and deception in a simulated international management negotiation at multiple levels of analysis. `Deception' was operationalized here as the propensity to lie and bribe. As predicted, at the cultural level the results from a scenario study with 1583 participants from eight cultures suggested that cultural collectivism was positively related to reported use of deception in negotiations, and to greater emotional reactions (i.e. guilt, shame, and disgust) after the use of deception. At the individual level, however, the personality variable of allocentrism (consisting of behaviors found in collectivist cultures) was negatively related to the use of deception. Theoretical implications are discussed.

TL;DR: Overall, operative and nonoperative treatment of these suprascapular nerve injuries resulted in significant functional improvement, but the results varied depending on the etiology of the injury.
Abstract: The functional outcome of operative and nonoperative treatment of suprascapular neuropathy was compared to determine the preferred method of treatment for each etiology of nerve injury. The predictive value of preoperative electromyography also was studied. Fifty-three patients were evaluated at least 1 year (average, 28 months) from the time of operative (n = 36) or nonoperative (n = 17) treatment. A modified American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons self-assessment score was obtained at presentation and at final followup. Electromyography data were obtained at initial presentation. Minimal electromyographic changes associated with denervation were associated with a limited response to treatment, especially in patients with nerve compression secondary to spinoglenoid notch cysts. Pretreatment electromyographic findings, therefore, were predictive of treatment response. Overall, operative and nonoperative treatment of these suprascapular nerve injuries resulted in significant functional improvement, but the results varied depending on the etiology of the injury. Spinoglenoid notch cysts responded significantly better to operative treatment, with the results for open surgery being the same as the results for arthroscopic decompression. In addition, compressive lesions attributable to suprascapular notch entrapment had the best improvement with surgical decompression. Traumatic lesions, including traction and direct closed injuries, had an equal response to operative and nonoperative treatment. Overuse injuries did not improve with operative treatment. Viral neuritis improved with nonoperative treatment and never was treated with surgery. Overall, traumatic injuries resulted in significantly worse final outcomes than any other etiologic processes. In the nonoperative group, neuropathy secondary to spinoglenoid cysts resulted in significantly worse function. The outcome of treatment is dependent on the severity and etiology of the nerve injury, and the method of treatment.

TL;DR: The results show that as the cache refill time increases, the improvement increases, which indicates that accurate prediction of cache-related preemption delay by the proposed technique becomes increasingly important if the current trend of widening speed gap between the processor and main memory continues.
Abstract: Cache memory is used in almost all computer systems today to bridge the ever increasing speed gap between the processor and main memory. However, its use in multitasking computer systems introduces additional preemption delay due to the reloading of memory blocks that are replaced during preemption. This cache-related preemption delay poses a serious problem in realtime computing systems where predictability is of utmost importance. We propose an enhanced technique for analyzing and thus bounding the cache-related preemption delay in fixed-priority preemptive scheduling focusing on instruction caching. The proposed technique improves upon previous techniques in two important ways. First, the technique takes into account the relationship between a preempted task and the set of tasks that execute during the preemption when calculating the cache-related preemption delay. Second, the technique considers the phasing of tasks to eliminate many infeasible task interactions. These two features are expressed as constraints of a linear programming problem whose solution gives a guaranteed upper bound on the cache-related preemption delay. This paper also compares the proposed technique with previous techniques using randomly generated task sets. The results show that the improvement on the worst-case response time prediction by the proposed technique over previous techniques ranges between 5 percent and 18 percent depending on the cache refill time when the task set utilization is 0.6. The results also show that as the cache refill time increases, the improvement increases, which indicates that accurate prediction of cache-related preemption delay by the proposed technique becomes increasingly important if the current trend of widening speed gap between the processor and main memory continues.

TL;DR: In this article, the principal antimicrobial compounds of Allium and Brassica have been elucidated as allicin (S-allyl-L-propenethiosulfinate) and methyl methanethiusulfinate, respectively.
Abstract: Allium and Brassica vegetables have long been known for their antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Most microorganisms tested were sensitive to extracts of the Allium and Brassica vegetables and the degree of sensitivity varied depending on the strain under study and test conditions. Among the vegetables, garlic showed the most potent activity, followed by onion. Brassica, including cabbage, showed the least potent activity. The principal antimicrobial compounds of Allium and Brassica have been elucidated as allicin (S-allyl-L-propenethiosulfinate) and methyl methanethiosulfinate, respectively. Both compounds belong to the same chemical group, thiosulfinate, generated from S-allyl and S-methyl derivatives of L-cysteine sulfoxide, respectively, existing in Allium and Brassica as major non-protein sulfur-containing amino acids. There have been only few applications of garlic as a natural food preservative, in spite of numerous s...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the steepest-descent method to simulate the cases of elongation, shearing, rotation and rotated elongation of a nanowire.
Abstract: We investigated mechanical deformations of Cu{100} nanowires using the steepest-descent method. We simulated the cases of elongation, shearing, rotation and rotated elongation. Before the first yielding nanowires preserve the elastic stage, and after this mechanical deformations proceed in alternating quasi-elastic and yielding stages. In the case of rotation deformation, the torque was inversely proportional to the tension force. It was shown that a nanowire in the case of rotated elongation is deformed more easily than one in cases of both elongation and rotation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the physical and luminescent properties of europium-doped yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3 :Eu) phosphors were investigated through emission spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopic, and scanning electron microscopy.
Abstract: The phosphors of high luminous efficiency for plasma display panel (PDP) applications must have high purity, single phase, uniform particle size, and clean surfaces. Photoluminescence characteristics of europium-doped yttrium oxide phosphors of spherical shape as well as optimum synthetic conditions for maximal luminescence were investigated through emission spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the spherical Y 2 O 3 :Eu phosphors had good mechanical properties and high emission spectra for device application Optical characteristics of spherical phosphors were mainly dependent on synthetic temperature, doped activator concentrations, particle size, and annealing process. Especially, it was observed that the europium distribution in the host lattice of our samples prepared by aerosol pyrolysis was quite different from that of commercial phosphors by the solid-state reaction method. The resultant spherical phosphors show comparable luminescent properties to the commercial product (product by Nichia Co.) This paper describes the synthetic technique and discusses physical and luminescent properties of spherical phosphors in comparison to the characteristics of phosphors prepared by the solid-state reaction method.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors made simultaneous measurements of the resonance strength and excitation energy of a radioactive ion beam at the ORNL Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility, and the best fit was obtained with a center-of-mass resonance energy of $664.3$ keV.
Abstract: Knowledge of the astrophysical rate of the ${}^{18}\mathrm{F}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha}{)}^{15}\mathrm{O}\mathrm{}$ reaction is important for understanding the \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray emission expected from novae and heavy-element production in x-ray bursts. The rate of this reaction is dominated at temperatures above $\ensuremath{\sim}0.4$ GK by a resonance near 7.08 MeV excitation energy in ${}^{19}\mathrm{Ne}.$ The ${}^{18}\mathrm{F}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha}{)}^{15}\mathrm{O}$ rate has been uncertain in part because of disagreements among previous measurements concerning the resonance strength and excitation energy of this state. To resolve these uncertainties, we have made simultaneous measurements of the ${}^{1}\mathrm{H}{(}^{18}\mathrm{F}{,p)}^{18}\mathrm{F}$ and ${}^{1}\mathrm{H}{(}^{18}\mathrm{F},\ensuremath{\alpha}{)}^{15}\mathrm{O}$ excitation functions using a radioactive ${}^{18}\mathrm{F}$ beam at the ORNL Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility. A simultaneous fit of the data sets has been performed, and the best fit was obtained with a center-of-mass resonance energy of $664.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.6$ keV ${(E}_{x}=7076\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2$ keV), a total width of $39.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.6$ keV, a proton branching ratio of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}/\ensuremath{\Gamma}=0.39\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02,$ and a resonance strength of $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\gamma}=6.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3$ keV.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of plasma treatment on the surface characteristics and conductivity of polyaniline-nylon 6 composite fabrics was investigated, and the results showed that fabric conductivity increased as the monomer concentration increased up to 0.5M and then leveled off, and further increases were achieved with an increase in the number of multiple deposits.
Abstract: The effect of plasma treatment on the surface characteristics and conductivity of polyaniline–nylon 6 composite fabrics was investigated. Plasma surface modifications with oxygen, ammonia, and argon were performed on the nylon 6 fabrics to improve the adhesion and rate of polymerization. The surface morphology of the fiber was observed with scanning electron microscopy, and functional groups introduced onto the surface of nylon 6 fibers by various plasma treatments were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With oxygen plasma treatment, the fiber surface was effectively etched; polar groups such as OH and OOH were introduced onto the surface of nylon 6 fiber, and they increased surface activity, promoted oxidation polymerization, and resulted in higher add-on and electrical conductivity. However, the introduced amine and amide groups with ammonia treatment caused a reduction in conductivity. Argon did not significantly alter the surface characteristics of the nylon 6 fibers. In addition, to control fabric conductivity and cover as wide a range of conductivity as possible, we observed the effects of the monomer concentration and number of deposits on the fabric conductivity. The results showed that fabric conductivity increased as the monomer concentration increased up to 0.5M and then leveled off, and further increases were achieved with an increase in the number of multiple deposits. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. TL;DR: Intacavernosal alprostadil was effective and well tolerated in type I and type II diabetic men with erectile dysfunction of mixed aetiology and treatment was generally well tolerated with a low incidence of penile pain.
Abstract: The efficacy and safety of intracavernosal alprostadil was evaluated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men with type I or type II diabetes mellitus. This was an open-label, flexible dose-escalating study involving 336 men (77% of whom were Asian/Oriental) enrolled by 15 centres in Australia, Canada and seven countries in Asia. The effective alprostadil dose, ie the dose producing penile rigidity adequate for intercourse and lasting up to 60 min, was established by titration at the clinic prior to entry into the 6 month self-treatment home phase. All men were fully trained in the self-injection technique before entry into the home phase. Efficacy and safety were assessed using patient and partner diaries and by interview at clinic visits during the titration phase and after 1, 3 and 6 months of treatment. An effective home dose was established by titration for 94% of the 336 men (median dose 20 microg, range 2.5-60 microg). Of 278 (83%) men who entered the home phase, 277 men (247 with type II diabetes and 30 with type I diabetes) had evaluable data for alprostadil dosage and clinical response. During the home phase, a satisfactory erectile response was achieved after 99% of injections, and the median alprostadil dose remained unchanged. The initial home dose and clinical response were similar in type I and type II diabetic men. Treatment was generally well tolerated with a low incidence of penile pain (24%) In conclusion, intracavernosal alprostadil was effective and well tolerated in type I and type II diabetic men with erectile dysfunction of mixed aetiology.

TL;DR: The results suggest that β‐carbolines may attenuate the dopamine‐ or 6‐hydroxydopamine‐induced alteration of brain mitochondrial and synaptosomal functions, and viability loss in PC12 cells, by a scavenging action on reactive oxygen species and inhibition of thiol oxidation.
Abstract: The present study elucidated the protective effect of beta-carbolines (harmaline, harmalol and harmine) against oxidative damage of brain mitochondria, synaptosomes and PC12 cells induced by either dopamine or 6-hydroxydopamine. Harmaline, harmalol and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase/SOD and catalase) decreased the alteration of mitochondrial swelling and membrane potential induced by 200 microM dopamine or 100 microM 6-hydroxydopamine. Deprenyl attenuated the dopamine-induced mitochondrial dysfunction but did not reduce the effect of 6-hydroxydopamine. While beta-carbolines inhibited the electron flow in mitochondria, they did not enhance the depressant effect of catecholamines. beta-Carbolines and antioxidant enzymes reversed the depression of synaptosomal Ca2+ uptake induced by 10 microM catecholamines. The compounds inhibited the catecholamine-induced thioredoxin reductase inhibition, thiol oxidation and carbonyl formation in mitochondria and synaptosomes. beta-Carbolines decreased the reactive species-induced deoxyribose degradation. Harmaline and harmalol reduced the catecholamine-induced loss of the transmembrane potential and of cell viability in PC12 cells. beta-Carbolines alone did not show a significant cytotoxic effect on PC12 cells. The results suggest that beta-carbolines may attenuate the dopamine- or 6-hydroxydopamine-induced alteration of brain mitochondrial and synaptosomal functions, and viability loss in PC12 cells, by a scavenging action on reactive oxygen species and inhibition of thiol oxidation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the free vibrations and buckling of rectangular plates having two opposite, simply supported edges subjected to linearly varying normal stresses causing pure in-plane moments, the other two edges being free.
Abstract: This paper presents exact solutions for the free vibrations and buckling of rectangular plates having two opposite, simply supported edges subjected to linearly varying normal stresses causing pure in-plane moments, the other two edges being free. Assuming displacement functions which are sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), the simply supported edge conditions are satisfied exactly. With this the differential equation of motion for the plate is reduced to an ordinary one having variable coefficients (in y). This equation is solved exactly by assuming power series in y and obtaining its proper coefficients (the method of Frobenius). Applying the free edge boundary conditions at y=0, b yields a fourth order characteristic determinant for the critical buckling moments and vibration frequencies. Convergence of the series is studied carefully. Numerical results are obtained for the critical buckling moments and some of their associated mode shapes. Comparisons are made with known results from less accurate one-dimensional beam theory. Free vibration frequency and mode shape results are also presented. Because the buckling and frequency parameters depend upon the Poisson's ratio (ν), results are shown for 0≤ν≤0.5, valid for isotropic materials.
