Abstract: In this study, we compared the paramedian interfascial approach (PIA) and the traditional midline approach (MA) for lumbar fusion to determine which approach resulted in the least amount of postoperative back muscle atrophy. We performed unilateral transforaminal posterior lumbar interbody fusion via MA on the symptomatic side and pedicle screw fixation via PIA on the other side in the same patient. We evaluated the damage to the paraspinal muscle after MA and PIA by measuring the preoperative and postoperative paraspinal muscle volume in 26 patients. The preoperative and postoperative cross-sectional area, thickness, and width of the multifidus muscle were measured by computed tomography. The degree of postoperative paraspinal muscle atrophy was significantly greater on the MA side than on the contralateral PIA side (-20.7% and -4.8%, respectively, p<0.01). In conclusion, the PIA for lumbar fusion yielded successful outcomes for the preservation of paraspinal muscle in these 26 patients. We suggest that the success of PIA is due to less manipulation and retraction of the paraspinal muscle and further studies on this technique may help confirm whether less muscle injury has positive effects on the long-term clinical outcome.

Abstract: Ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) can be considered an attractive target for cancer treatment due to its deleterious effect on cancer cells harboring a homologous recombination defect. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential use of the ATR inhibitor, AZD6738, to treat gastric cancer.In SNU-601 cells with dysfunctional ATM, AZD6738 treatment led to an accumulation of DNA damage due to dysfunctional RAD51 foci formation, S phase arrest, and caspase 3-dependent apoptosis. In contrast, SNU-484 cells with functional ATM were not sensitive to AZD6738. Inhibition of ATM in SNU-484 cells enhanced AZD6738 sensitivity to a level comparable with that observed in SNU-601 cells, showing that activation of the ATM-Chk2 signaling pathway attenuates AZD6738 sensitivity. In addition, decreased HDAC1 expression was found to be associated with ATM inactivation in SNU-601 cells, demonstrating the interaction between HDAC1 and ATM can affect sensitivity to AZD6738. Furthermore, in an in vivo tumor xenograft mouse model, AZD6738 significantly suppressed tumor growth and increased apoptosis.These findings suggest synthetic lethality between ATR inhibition and ATM deficiency in gastric cancer cells. Further clinical studies on the interaction between AZD 6738 and ATM deficiency are warranted to develop novel treatment strategies for gastric cancer. Mol Cancer Ther; 16(4); 566-77. ©2017 AACR.

Abstract: Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted attention for gas sensor fields due to their unique properties such as high surface to volume ratio and numerous active sites. In particular, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and MoS2 are one of the most promising materials for humidity sensor due to the oxygen containing functional groups on the surface of rGO and dangling bonds at the edge site of MoS2. Herein, we present 2D rGO/2D MoS2 hybrid composites (MS-GOs) synthesized by hydrothermal method. rGO and MoS2 are mixed with different molar ratios and drop-casted on SiO2 substrate with Pt interdigitated electrode. At an optimized molar ratio of rGO/MoS2, the sensor device exhibits high sensitivity, good selectivity, rapid response and recovery, and good linearity for humidity sensing. The enhanced sensing properties are attributed to the p-n junction between rGO and MoS2. Our work provides an efficient way for realizing high-performance and fast responding humidity sensors utilizing 2D-2D heterojunction materials based chemoresistive humidity sensors for use in diverse applications.
