TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated methane emissions, along with methanotrophs and methanogens and soil chemical properties in a flooded rice ecosystem, and found normalized mcrA/pmoA transcript ratios to be a promising parameter for predicting net methane fluxes emitted from rice paddy soils.

TL;DR: A SEDMS that operates through interaction between a smart energy distribution system and a smart monitoring and control system that monitors information about power consumption, a user¿s situation and surroundings as well as controls appliances using dynamic patterns is proposed.
Abstract: Emerging green IT and smart grid technologies have changed electric power infrastructure more efficiently. These technologies enable a power system operator and a consumer to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by optimizing energy distribution and management. There are many studies of these topics with the trend of green IT and smart grid technology. However, existing systems are still not effectively implemented in home and building because of their architectural limitations. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a smart energy distribution and management system (SEDMS) that operates through interaction between a smart energy distribution system and a smart monitoring and control system. Proposed system monitors information about power consumption, a user?s situation and surroundings as well as controls appliances using dynamic patterns. Because SEDMS is connected with the existing power grid and with the newrenewable energy system, we consider integration of new renewable energy system through electric power control. We implemented proposed system in test-bed and carry out some experiments. The results show that a reduction of the service response time and the power consumption are approximately 45.6% and 9-17% respectively.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of aspect ratio on critical velocity were analyzed from smoke movement, where the aspect ratio is height/width for a tunnel of rectangular cross-section, and a good agreement has been obtained.
Abstract: In this study, the critical velocity was investigated with various aspect ratios (0.5, 0.667, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) of the tunnel cross-section in tunnel fires. Reduced-scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling using ethanol pool fire. Temperatures were measured under the ceiling and vertical direction along the center of the tunnel. The effects of aspect ratio on critical velocity were analyzed from smoke movement. It has been found that the critical velocity increases with aspect ratio, where the aspect ratio is height/ width for a tunnel of rectangular cross-section. This study used new dimensionless velocity and dimensionless heat release rate parameters considering aspect ratio of the tunnel. The critical velocity varied with the one-third power of the heat release rate for under-medium fires. The results of this study are compared with other small-scale and full-scale experiments. A good agreement has been obtained.

TL;DR: Prolonged delirium was found to be associated with a poor functional outcome and increased mortality in elderly patients after hip fracture surgery.
Abstract: Delirium in elderly patients after hip fracture surgery is believed to be a transient event, although it frequently lasts for more than 4 weeks. We determined the incidence, risk factors, morbidity, and mortality of prolonged delirium in elderly patients after hip fracture surgery. We evaluated 232 elderly patients (older than 65 years) (232 hips) who underwent hip fracture surgery for the development and duration of delirium and categorized them into three groups; nondelirium group, transient (≤ 4 weeks) delirium group, and prolonged (> 4 weeks) delirium group. Patients underwent a global geriatric evaluation, which included postoperative complications, mortality, and functional and mental status evaluations. The three groups were compared with respect to these variables. Seventy patients (30.2%) had delirium develop, and among these, 14 (20%) had prolonged delirium with a total incidence of 6%. Multivariate analysis showed preinjury dementia was a risk factor of prolonged delirium. At the final followup, five (62.5%) of the eight patients who were ambulatory outdoors in the prolonged delirium group became housebound, whereas only 18 (16.4%) of the 110 patients who were ambulatory outdoors in the nondelirium group became housebound. Survival at 40 months was 81.0% (95% confidence interval, 72.6%–89.3%) in the nondelirium group and 63.6% (95% confidence interval, 35.2%–92.1%) in the prolonged delirium group. Prolonged delirium was found to be associated with a poor functional outcome and increased mortality. Level II, prognostic study.
