TL;DR: In this article, a T-S fuzzy observer is developed to reduce the number of measured signals and a fuzzy direct MPPT controller is proposed to achieve asymptotic MPPT control in which the observer and controller gains are obtained by separately solving two sets of linear matrix inequalities.
Abstract: This paper presents maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for stand-alone solar power generation systems via the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy-model-based approach. In detail, we consider a dc/dc buck converter to regulate the output power of the photovoltaic panel array. First, the system is represented by the T-S fuzzy model. Next, in order to reduce the number of measured signals, a T-S fuzzy observer is developed for state feedback. Then, a fuzzy direct MPPT controller is proposed to achieve asymptotic MPPT control, in which the observer and controller gains are obtained by separately solving two sets of linear matrix inequalities. Different from the traditional MPPT approaches, the proposed T-S fuzzy controller directly drives the system to the maximum power point without searching the maximum power point and measuring insolation. Furthermore, when considering disturbance and uncertainty, robust MPPT is guaranteed by advanced gain design. Therefore, the proposed method provides an easier implementation form under strict stability analysis. Finally, the control performance is shown from the numerical simulation and experimental results.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the impact on a transformative model of integrating technology and peer coaching for developing technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) of pre-service science teachers.
Abstract: New science teachers should be equipped with the ability to integrate and design the curriculum and technology for innovative teaching. How to integrate technology into pre-service science teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge is the important issue. This study examined the impact on a transformative model of integrating technology and peer coaching for developing technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) of pre-service science teachers. A transformative model and an online system were designed to restructure science teacher education courses. Participants of this study included an instructor and 12 pre-service teachers. The main sources of data included written assignments, online data, reflective journals, videotapes and interviews. This study expanded four views, namely, the comprehensive, imitative, transformative and integrative views to explore the impact of TPACK. The model could help pre-service teachers develop technological pedagogical methods and strategies of integrating subject-matter knowledge into science lessons, and further enhanced their TPACK.

TL;DR: The results indicate the potential of textile-based screen-printed amperometric sensors for future healthcare, sport or military applications, which would benefit from tailoring the ink composition and printing conditions to meet the specific requirements of the textile substrate.
Abstract: The incorporation of amperometric sensors into clothing through direct screen-printing onto the textile substrate is described. Particular attention is given to electrochemical sensors printed directly on the elastic waist of underwear that offers tight direct contact with the skin. The textile-based printed carbon electrodes have a well-defined appearance with relatively smooth conductor edges and no apparent defects or cracks. Convenient voltammetric and chronoamperometric measurements of 0–3 mM ferrocyanide, 0–25 mM hydrogen peroxide, and 0–100 μM NADH have been documented. The favorable electrochemical behavior is maintained under folding or stretching stress, relevant to the deformation of clothing. The electrochemical performance and tolerance to mechanical stress are influenced by the physical characteristics of the textile substrate. The results indicate the potential of textile-based screen-printed amperometric sensors for future healthcare, sport or military applications. Such future applications would benefit from tailoring the ink composition and printing conditions to meet the specific requirements of the textile substrate.

TL;DR: Four different techniques are used to predict bankrupt and non-bankrupt firms in England and the original classification accuracy and the validation test results indicate that RBFN outperforms the other models.
Abstract: Bankruptcy prediction is one of the major business classification problems. In this paper, we use four different techniques (1) logit model, (2) quadratic interval logit model, (3) backpropagation multi-layer perceptron (i.e., MLP), and (4) radial basis function network (i.e., RBFN) to predict bankrupt and non-bankrupt firms in England. The average hit ratio of four methods range from 91.15% to 77.05%. The original classification accuracy and the validation test results indicate that RBFN outperforms the other models.

TL;DR: This work shows that the polySBMA polymer with an optimized molecular weight of about 135 kDa at physiologic temperature is presented high hydration capability to function the best nonfouling character of anticoagulant activity and antihemolytic activity in human blood.
Abstract: This work describes a tunable blood compatibility of zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) polymers at a wide range of high molecular weights from 50 kDa to 300 kDa controlled with a similar polydispersity via homogeneous free-radical polymerization. The control of molecular weights of polySBMA highly regulates the zwitterionic nonfouling nature to resist the adsorption of plasma proteins, the coagulant of human plasma, and the hemolysis of red blood cells. In this study, the upper critical solution temperatures (UCSTs) and hydrodynamic size of prepared polymers are determined to illustrate the correlations between intermolecular zwitterionic associations and blood compatibility of polySBMA suspension in human blood. The polySBMA exhibited clear shifts of UCSTs in the stimuli-responsive control of solution pH and ionic strength, which were strongly associated with the molecular weights of the prepared polymers. Plasma-protein adsorption onto the polySBMA polymers from single-protein solu...

TL;DR: Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that these compounds act as anti-influenza agents by inhibiting ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex associated activity and have the potential to be developed further, which could form the basis for developing additional defense against influenza pandemics.
Abstract: By using a cell-based high throughput screening campaign, a novel angelicin derivative 6a was identified to inhibit influenza A (H1N1) virus induced cytopathic effect in Madin-Darby canine kidney cell culture in low micromolar range. Detailed structure-activity relationship studies of 6a revealed that the angelicin scaffold is essential for activity in pharmacophore B, while meta-substituted phenyl/2-thiophene rings are optimal in pharmacophore A and C. The optimized lead 4-methyl-9-phenyl-8-(thiophene-2-carbonyl)-furo[2,3-h]chromen-2-one (8g, IC(50) = 70 nM) showed 64-fold enhanced activity compared to the high throughput screening (HTS) hit 6a. Also, 8g was found effective in case of influenza A (H3N2) and influenza B virus strains similar to approved anti-influenza drug zanamivir (4). Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that these compounds act as anti-influenza agents by inhibiting ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex associated activity and have the potential to be developed further, which could form the basis for developing additional defense against influenza pandemics.

TL;DR: Mixed-charge copolymer brushes of poly(TMA-co-SA), which, like zwitterionic homopolymer brushes, have overall charge neutrality, can be used in similar applications for protein-fouling resistance and have excellent hemocompatibility with human whole blood at physiologic temperatures are suggested.
Abstract: In this work, the hemocompatibility of a sulfobetaine-like copolymer brush resulting from a mixed-charge copolymerization of the positively charged 11-mercapto-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride (TMA) and negatively charged 11-mercaptoundecylsulfonic acid (SA) was studied. Mixed charge distribution in the prepared poly(TMA-co-SA) copolymer brushes was controlled by the regulation of the reaction rate of the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The adsorption behavior of plasma proteins on a surface grafted with poly(TMA-co-SA) was measured by a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. The effects of varying temperature, solution pH, and ionic strength on the antifouling characteristics of the mixed-charge copolymer brushes were systematically evaluated, and the protein-fouling resistance was discussed in detail, especially with respect to the effect of ionic strength on the intra- and intermolecular interactions of the poly(TMA-co-SA) with proteins. The adhesion and activation of blood cells on the poly(TMA-co-SA)-grafted surface in contact with human whole blood was also demonstrated. The results suggest that mixed-charge copolymer brushes of poly(TMA-co-SA), which, like zwitterionic homopolymer brushes, have overall charge neutrality, can be used in similar applications for protein-fouling resistance and have excellent hemocompatibility with human whole blood at physiologic temperatures.

TL;DR: The proposed model of integrating IWBs and peer coaching can develop the TPACK of science teachers in real classrooms and displayed three major findings.
Abstract: Many studies related to the use of interactive whiteboards (IWBs) in educational settings have shown that IWB technology can result in enhanced presentations and in the development of student motivation and student performance. However, the relationship between the use of IWBs and Technological Pedagogical Content and Knowledge (TPACK) by teachers is yet to be fully investigated and understood. The purpose of this study was to integrate IWB technology and peer coaching to develop the TPACK of secondary science teachers in real classrooms. An IWB-based peer coaching model was developed. Participants of this study included four in-service science teachers. The sources of data included written assignments, reflective journals and interviews. The results displayed three major findings. First, science teachers used IWBs as instructional tools to share their subject-matter knowledge and to express students' understanding. Second, the IWBs helped the science teachers who encountered teaching difficulties in the traditional classroom better implement their representational repertoires and instructional strategies. Finally, the proposed model of integrating IWBs and peer coaching can develop the TPACK of science teachers. The research implications of this study are provided along with suggestions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the chemical structure of Nafion-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-Nafion) is characterized by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrographs.
Abstract: Nafion-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-Nafion) are prepared through an ozone-mediated process. The chemical structure of MWCNT-Nafion is characterized by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Nafion chains covering on the outer surfaces of MWCNTs in MWCNT-Nafion is observed in high-resolution transmission electron micrographs. The Nafion fraction of MWCNT-Nafion is about 12 wt%. MWCNT-Nafion is effective to prepare Nafion/MWCNT-Nafion composite membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Compared to the pristine Nafion membrane, the composite membrane with a MWCNT-Nafion loading of 0.05 wt% (N/MN-0.05) exhibits an 1.5-fold increase of mechanical strength and a five-fold increase of proton conductivity. In single cell tests, the current density at 0.6 V and the maximum power density measured with the N/MN-0.05 composite membrane are 1556 mA cm−2 and 650 mW cm−2, respectively. Both of the values are 1.5-times the values measured with a pristine Nafion membrane.

TL;DR: The extent of population of an ensemble of N* structures, which are fibril-prone structures in the spectrum of conformations of an isolated protein, is the major determinant of τ(fib), which is used to determine the aggregating sequences by exhaustively exploring the sequence space, thus providing a basis for genome wide search of fragments that are aggregation prone.
Abstract: Using lattice models we explore the factors that determine the tendencies of polypeptide chains to aggregate by exhaustively sampling the sequence and conformational space. The morphologies of the fibril-like structures and the time scales (${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{fib}}$) for their formation depend on a balance between hydrophobic and Coulomb interactions. The extent of population of an ensemble of ${\mathbf{N}}^{*}$ structures, which are fibril-prone structures in the spectrum of conformations of an isolated protein, is the major determinant of ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{fib}}$. This observation is used to determine the aggregating sequences by exhaustively exploring the sequence space, thus providing a basis for genome wide search of fragments that are aggregation prone.

TL;DR: Chiral separation of racemic mixtures of pharmaceuticals through chiral or achiral polymeric membranes with or without a chiral selector represents a promising system for future commercial application.
Abstract: The optical resolution or chiral separation of one specific enantiomer from others is in demand for the production of pharmaceuticals because many pharmaceuticals exist as stereoisomers, with each enantiomer having different biological activity. There is considerable demand for separation techniques appropriate for the large-scale resolution of chiral molecules. Chiral separation of racemic mixtures of pharmaceuticals through chiral or achiral polymeric membranes with or without a chiral selector represents a promising system for future commercial application. This article reviews several polymeric materials for the chiral separation of pharmaceuticals. Several chiral separation membranes were prepared from chiral polymers where enantioselectivity was generated from chiral carbons in the main chain. However, it is rather difficult to generate excellent chiral separation membranes from chiral polymers alone, because racemic penetrants mainly encounter the flexible side chains of the membrane polymers. TL;DR: The study finds that several NPD tools and techniques have a significant effect on the overall performance of NPD and on a number of performance indicators, but that their utilization is not especially high.
Abstract: Utilization of appropriate tools and techniques in the process of new product development (NPD) can assist firms to achieve better performances in launching new products. However, in practice, many useful tools and techniques are not utilized effectively. This study undertakes an in-depth empirical investigation of the appropriate tools or techniques that can be used at each stage of the NPD process. The study also analyzes the impact of individual tools or techniques both on overall NPD performance and on individual performance indicators within the process. The study finds that several NPD tools and techniques (for example, DOE, FMEA/DFMEA, and supplier involvement) have a significant effect on the overall performance of NPD and on a number of performance indicators, but that their utilization is not especially high. In addition, the study finds that DFX, conjoint analysis, and concept test, which also have a significant effect on NPD performance, are relatively neglected by the firms. The study provides valuable guidance to firms in using such tools and techniques more appropriately and effectively.

TL;DR: The difference values of AR coefficients indicated that the AR coefficients of ideal signal for normal machine are deducted from faulty machines, which indicated the new fault diagnosis method by using the difference of AR coefficient with BPNN was proposed.
Abstract: The common diagnosis method of time series analysis is an autoregressive (AR) method, which is a kind of math model that can be established by time difference and vibration amplitude. As the AR model utilized the math method for fitting the variable, the AR coefficients represent the signal features and can be used to determine fault types. This study proposed the difference values of AR coefficients, which indicated that the AR coefficients of ideal signal for normal machine are deducted from faulty machines. It is convention that the relationship between the difference values of AR coefficients and fault types as trained by using back-propagation neural network (BPNN). The new fault diagnosis method by using the difference of AR coefficients with BPNN was proposed in this study. The diagnosis results were obtained and compared with the three methods, which include the difference of AR coefficients with BPNN, the AR coefficients with BPNN and the distance of AR coefficients method for 23 samples. And the diagnosis results obtained by using the difference of AR coefficients with BPNN were superior to AR coefficients with BPNN and distance of AR coefficients methods.

TL;DR: The GRA-based classifier could be further recommend to implement in prosthesis control, robotic manipulator or hand motion classification applications, compared with the multi-layer neural networks (MLNNs) based classifier.
Abstract: This paper proposes the portable hand motion classifier (HMC) for multi-channel surface electromyography (SEMG) recognition using grey relational analysis (GRA). SEMG provides information on motion detection of flexion and extension of fingers, wrist, forearm, and arm. A portable HMC is developed to identify hand motion from the SEMG signals with an electrode configuration system (ECS) and GRA-based classifier. The ECS consists of seven active electrodes place around the forearm to acquire the multi-channel SEMG signals of corresponding muscle groups. Six parameters are extracted from each electrode channel and various 42 (7 Channels by 6 Parameters) parameters could be constructed as specific patterns. Sequentially, these patterns are sent to the GRA-based classifier to recognize 11 hand motions. Twelve subjects including eight males and four females participate in this study. Compared with the multi-layer neural networks (MLNNs) based classifier, GRA demonstrates the processing time, computational efficiency, and accurate recognition for recognizing SEMG signals. It takes about 0.05s CPU time to identify each hand motion which is close to a real-time process. Therefore, the GRA-based classifier could be further recommend to implement in prosthesis control, robotic manipulator or hand motion classification applications.

TL;DR: Simulation results demonstrate that the effectiveness of the proposed AGA method can suppress the nonlinear noise interference under several situations without clearly identifying the secondary path.
Abstract: This paper presents an adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) for an active noise control (ANC) system. The conventional ANC system often implements the filtered extended least mean square (FXLMS) algorithm to update the coefficients of the linear finite-impulse response (FIR) and nonlinear Volterra filters, owing to its simplicity; meanwhile, the FXLMS algorithm may converge to local minima. In this paper, the FXLMS algorithm is replaced with an AGA to prevent the local minima problem. Additionally, the proposed AGA method does not require identifying the secondary path for the ANC, explaining why no plant measurement is necessary when designing an AGA-based ANC system. Simulation results demonstrate that the effectiveness of the proposed AGA method can suppress the nonlinear noise interference under several situations without clearly identifying the secondary path.
