Abstract: This paper presents maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for stand-alone solar power generation systems via the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy-model-based approach. In detail, we consider a dc/dc buck converter to regulate the output power of the photovoltaic panel array. First, the system is represented by the T-S fuzzy model. Next, in order to reduce the number of measured signals, a T-S fuzzy observer is developed for state feedback. Then, a fuzzy direct MPPT controller is proposed to achieve asymptotic MPPT control, in which the observer and controller gains are obtained by separately solving two sets of linear matrix inequalities. Different from the traditional MPPT approaches, the proposed T-S fuzzy controller directly drives the system to the maximum power point without searching the maximum power point and measuring insolation. Furthermore, when considering disturbance and uncertainty, robust MPPT is guaranteed by advanced gain design. Therefore, the proposed method provides an easier implementation form under strict stability analysis. Finally, the control performance is shown from the numerical simulation and experimental results.

Abstract: We present results of the electro-optical effect in 90° twisted nematic cells of pristine and doped liquid crystals under an applied dc voltage. The doped cells were fabricated with a minute addition of either buckminsterfullerene C60 or multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Investigated were the switching behaviors as well as the hystereses and time evolutions of both the optical transmittance and electrical capacitance of the display samples. It is shown that doping with nanotubes can effectively reduce the dc driving voltage and improve the switching behavior.

Abstract: In the drive toward green and sustainable methodologies for chemicals manufacturing, biocatalysts are predicted to have much to offer in the years to come. That being said, their practical applications are often hampered by a lack of long-term operational stability, limited operating range, and a low recyclability for the enzymes utilized. Herein, we show how covalent organic frameworks (COFs) possess all the necessary requirements needed to serve as ideal host materials for enzymes. The resultant biocomposites of this study have shown the ability boost the stability and robustness of the enzyme in question, namely lipase PS, while also displaying activities far outperforming the free enzyme and biocomposites made from other types of porous materials, such as mesoporous silica and metal–organic frameworks, exemplified in the kinetic resolution of the alcohol assays performed. Abstract: This paper proposes a new approach to detect the fall of the elderly. The detection system uses a MapCam (omni-camera) to capture images and performs image processing over the images. The personal information of each individual is considered in the processing task. The MapCam is used to capture 360deg scenes simultaneously and eliminate any blind viewing zone. The personal information is combined into the system and makes it smarter by customizing the system for each individual. With personal information such as height, weight, and electronic health history, we can adjust the detection sensitivity on a case by case basis to reduce unnecessary alarms, and put more attention on the elderly with special diseases or conditions. We perform a simple experiment to verify the feasibility of our approach. The experimental results show that the successful rates of fall detections with and without personal information are 79.8% and 68%, respectively. The Kappa value of the system is 0.798 which is higher than 0.75, showing that we have a reliable system
