Abstract: Textile dyeing wastewater is harmful to both marine organisms and human beings. This study focused on the treatment of wastewater containing an azo dye, Reactive Black 5 (RB5), using an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) combined with an aerobic membrane bioreactor (aerobic MBR). In addition the anaerobic RB5 degrading bacteria were isolated and their individual performance were tested separately. Nearly 92.3 and 5.2% of COD removal and 74.6 and 9.1% of true color removal was achieved using the anaerobic SBR and the aerobic MBR respectively. Five types of high RB5 degrading bacteria isolated were sequenced to be different subspecies of Lactococcus lactis , which could degrade more than 99% of the RB5 within 5.5 h. Twenty types of medium RB5 degrading isolation were observed to be different subspecies of Lactobacillus casei , which could degrade more than 99% of the RB5 within 36 h. Finally, the experiments also showed that the RB5 degradation performance of the L. casei was improved by the suitable addition of carbon and nitrogen source in the medium.

Abstract: In this paper, we give similarity measures between type-2 fuzzy sets and provide the axiom definition and properties of these measures. For practical use, we show how to compute the similarities between Gaussian type-2 fuzzy sets. Yang and Shih's [22] algorithm, a clustering method based on fuzzy relations by beginning with a similarity matrix, is applied to these Gaussian type-2 fuzzy sets by beginning with these similarities. The clustering results are reasonable consisting of a hierarchical tree according to different levels.

Abstract: A transesterification reaction of Jatropha curcas oil with methanol in the presence of KOH impregnated CaO catalyst was performed in a simple continuous process. The process variables such as methanol/oil molar ratio (X1), amount of catalyst (X2) and total reaction time (X3) were optimized through response surface methodology, using the Box–Behnken model. Within the range of the selected operating conditions, the optimal ratio of methanol to oil, amount of catalyst and total reaction time were found to be 8.42, 3.17% and 67.9 min, respectively. The results showed that the amount of catalyst and total reaction time have significant effects on the transesterification reaction. For the product to be accepted as a biodiesel fuel, its purity must be above 96.5% of alkyl esters. Based on the optimum condition, the predicted biodiesel conversion was 97.6% while the actual experimental value was 97.1%. The above mentioned results demonstrated that the response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box–Behnken model can well predict the optimum condition for the biodiesel production.
