Abstract: Topological transitions between considerably different phases typically require harsh conditions to collectively break chemical bonds and overcome the stress caused to the original structure by altering its correlated bond environment. In this work we present a case system that can achieve rapid rearrangement of the whole lattice of a metal–organic framework through a domino alteration of the bond connectivity under mild conditions. The system transforms from a disordered metal–organic framework with low porosity to a highly porous and crystalline isomer within 40 s following activation (solvent exchange and desolvation), resulting in a substantial increase in surface area from 725 to 2,749 m2 g–1. Spectroscopic measurements show that this counter-intuitive lattice rearrangement involves a metastable intermediate that results from solvent removal on coordinatively unsaturated metal sites. This disordered–crystalline switch between two topological distinct metal–organic frameworks is shown to be reversible over four cycles through activation and reimmersion in polar solvents. A disordered metal–organic framework converts into a more porous, crystalline phase within 40 s following solvent exchange and desolvation. The rapid domino rearrangement of the whole lattice, which involves carboxylate migration on coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, is accompanied by a substantial increase in surface area.

Abstract: In 1918, Zsigmondy and Bachmann presented a new method to induce phase separation of a homogeneous polymeric solution from a vapor phase. The so-called vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS) was born. In a century, the body of knowledge on polymer membranes and hydrogels prepared by VIPS has grown importantly, which suggests the need for a critical review. Slowness of mass transfers involved in VIPS, attributed to the resistance at the gaseous phase/liquid phase interface, permits reaching better control of polymer membrane formation than with the popular wet-immersion process. As a result, a broad variety of morphologies can be obtained and well controlled. The control of testing conditions and formulation parameters also permits tuning and tailoring morphologies, which arises in various membranes properties, and led scientists to investigate the possibility of forecasting mass transfers in VIPS. Abstract: Abnormal misfolding and aggregation of amyloid peptides into amyloid fibrils are common and critical pathological events in many neurodegenerative diseases. Most inhibitors or drugs have been developed to prevent amyloid aggregation of a specific peptide, showing sequence-dependent inhibition mechanisms. It is more challenging to develop or discover inhibitors capable of preventing the aggregation of two or more different amyloid peptides. Genistein, a major phytoestrogen in soybean, has been widely used as an anti-inflammation and cerebrovascular drug due to its antioxidation and antiacetylcholinesterase effects. Herein, we examine the inhibitory effects of genistein on the aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ, associated with Alzheimer’s disease) and human islet amylin (hIAPP, associated with type 2 diabetes) and Aβ- and hIAPP-induced neurotoxicity using a combination of experimental and computational approaches.
