TL;DR: In this paper, a bisphenol-A-type epoxy resins containing both phosphorous and silicon was prepared via the fusion process of reacting a phosphorous diol and a silicon diol with a BIP-A type epoxy, and the epoxies were cured with diaminodiphenylmethane.
Abstract: Epoxy resins containing both phosphorous and silicon were prepared via the fusion process of reacting a phosphorous diol and a silicon diol with a bisphenol-A-type epoxy. With various feeding ratios of the reactants, epoxy resins with different phosphorous and silicon contents were obtained. Through curing the epoxies with diaminodiphenylmethane, the cured epoxy resins exhibit tailored glass transition temperatures (159–77°C), good thermal stability (>320°C), and high char yields at 700°C under air atmosphere. The high char yield was demonstrated to come from the synergistic effect of phosphorous and silicon, where phosphorous enriches char formation and silicon protects the char from thermal degradation. Moreover, high flame retardancy of the epoxy resins was found by the high LOI value of 42.5. The relationship of the char yields at 700°C under air atmosphere (ρ) and the LOI values of the epoxy resins could be expressed as LOI = 0.62ρ + 19.2. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. TL;DR: In this paper, the interaction and mechanism for CO oxidation on the Mn/CeO2(111) surface have been studied by using periodic density functional theory calculations corrected with the on-site Coulomb interaction via a Hubbard term (DFT + U).
Abstract: The interaction and mechanism for CO oxidation on the Mn/CeO2(111) surface have been studied by using periodic density functional theory calculations corrected with the on-site Coulomb interaction via a Hubbard term (DFT + U). It is found that the Mn dopant facilitates oxygen vacancy formation, while the Mn adatoms may restrain oxygen vacancy formation. In addition, physisorbed CO, physisorbed CO2 ,and chemisorbed CO (carbonite, CO2–) species are observed on the Mn-doped CeO2(111) surface, in contrast, only physisorbed CO is found on the pure CeO2(111) surface. The vibrational frequency calculations as well as the calculated adsorption energies are carried to characterize these species. The Mn dopant promotes CO oxidation without any activation energy leading to O vacancy formation and CO2 desorption. The Bader charge analysis is carried to characterize the oxidation state of Mn ions along the catalytic cycle.

TL;DR: The results showed that this study provided information to enhance students' expression of sensitivity, fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration of scientific creativities, which was motivated by the online interactivities and the teacher's inquiry.
Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate how web-based technology could be utilized and integrated with real-life scientific materials to stimulate the creativity of secondary school students. One certified science teacher and 31 seventh graders participated in this study. Several real-life experience science sessions integrated with online teaching were used for one semester. The study used an interpretive methodology, which was qualitative analysis rather than quantitative analysis. The main data included students' online data, interviews, videotape recordings and the teacher's journals. The results also showed that this study provided information to enhance students' expression of sensitivity, fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration of scientific creativities. Students' creativity was motivated by the online interactivities and the teacher's inquiry. The difficulties and limitations of the teaching and learning environment included strong attraction toward the Internet, poor ability of students in word processing and discussion online, students' utilitarianism due to the pressure of entrance examination, and large amount of time spent on explorative activities.

TL;DR: In this article, a single-phased white light-emitting KCaGd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Tb3+,Mn2+ phosphors were synthesized by a solid state reaction.
Abstract: Single-phased white light-emitting KCaGd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Tb3+,Mn2+ phosphors were synthesized by a solid state reaction. By changing the doping contents of Eu2+, Tb3+ and Mn2+, the emission hue could be precisely controlled via the energy transfer mechanism. The structure refinement, luminescence properties as well as their thermal quenching and energy transfer mechanism were firstly investigated. The mechanism of transferring energy between Eu2+, Mn2+ and Tb3+ ions was also discussed in this study. The optimal-composition for white-light is K(Ca0.89Eu0.01Mn0.1)(Gd0.9Tb0.1)(PO4)2, which gives the CIE coordinates of (0.2984, 0.3171). These results indicate that the KCaGd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+,Tb3+ phosphor could be a promising single-composition phosphor for applications involving white-light NUV LEDs.
