TL;DR: It is demonstrated that low intensity ultrasound stimulation could increase the new bone formation and torsional stiffness in New Zealand White rabbits and probably is not mediated via hyperthermia.
Abstract: Low intensity ultrasound stimulation has been used as a strategy to promote fracture healing. This study investigated the mechanism of ultrasound stimulation in enhancing fracture healing. Forty-five adult New Zealand White rabbits were divided into control, microwave treated, and ultrasound stimulation groups. After anesthesia, transverse osteotomy was created at midportion of the fibula bone. Intravital staining followed by fluorescence microscopic examination of new bone formation in the osteotomy site and biomechanical tests on torsional stiffness of the osteotomy site were performed. The difference between each examination was evaluated and analyzed. After ultrasound stimulation, new bone formation in the osteotomy site of the stimulated limb was 23.1-35.8% faster than that of the sham treated limb; the torsional stiffness of the stimulated limb was 44.4-80.0% higher than that of the sham treated limb. In the group of microwave hyperthermia treatment, the new bone formation was higher than that of the sham treated limb, but the difference was not statistically significant. The difference in torsional stiffness between the microwave hyperthermia treated limbs and the sham treated limb was not quite statistically significant. We demonstrated that low intensity ultrasound stimulation could increase the new bone formation and torsional stiffness. These effects probably are not mediated via hyperthermia.

TL;DR: In this article, a new configuration for realizing voltage-mode highpass, bandpass and lowpass filters, simultaneously, using two differential difference current conveyors (DDCCs), two grounded capacitors and two grounded resistors is presented.
Abstract: A new configuration for realizing voltage-mode highpass, bandpass and lowpass filters, simultaneously, using two differential difference current conveyors (DDCCs), two grounded capacitors and two grounded resistors is presented. The proposed circuit offers the following features: realization of highpass, bandpass and lowpass signals from the same configuration, no requirements for component matching conditions, the use of only grounded capacitors and resistors, high input impedance, low active and passive sensitivities and simpler configuration due to the use of only two DDCCs and four passive components.

TL;DR: The effect of transducer characteristics on the sensitivity of the Nakagami parameter to detect the variation of scatterer concentrations was studied in this paper, where backscattered signals acquired from the scattering medium of different scatterers were calculated using both 5 MHz non-focused and focused transducers.
Abstract: The effect of transducer characteristics on the sensitivity of the Nakagami parameter to detect the variation of scatterer concentrations was studied. The rationale for this study stems from our pilot results which showed that the Nakagami parameters, estimated using a nonfocused transducer were not as sensitive as those of measurements using a commercial ultrasonic scanner in previous reports. This discrepancy may be attributed to the effects of transducer characteristics relative to the size of the resolution cell as verified by measurements of phantoms and 2-D computer simulations. The Nakagami parameter as a function of scatterer concentration was calculated using backscattered signals acquired from the scattering medium of different scatterer concentrations ranging from 2 to 32 scatterers/mm 3 using both 5 MHz nonfocused and focused transducers. Experimental and simulation results obtained from the nonfocused transducer represent that their respective Nakagami parameters increased from 1.17 to 1.31 and from 0.82 to 1.01 corresponding to the increase of scatterer concentrations. For the results obtained from the focused transducer, their average Nakagami parameters increased from 0.27 to 0.72 and from 0.33 to 0.81. These consistent results demonstrated that Nakagami parameter estimated using a focused transducer tends to be more sensitive than that by a nonfocused transducer to detect the variation of low scatterer concentration. This difference is fully due to the effect of transducer characteristics associated with the effective number of scatterers in the resolution cell. (E-mail: shyhhau@cycu.edu.tw )
