TL;DR: A procedure for the surface functionalization of nanoparticles with a controlled number of mono‐ or bifunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molecules of suitable chain length is reported.
Abstract: A concept is describe that facilitates the modification of colloidal nanoparticles of different materials with an exactly known number of variable functional groups. In particular, a procedure for the surface functionalization of nanoparticles with a controlled number of mono- or bifunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molecules of suitable chain length is reported. Conjugates of nanoparticles with one, two, and three PEG molecules per nanoparticle could be separated using gel electrophoresis. Molecules with additional functionalities could be conjugated to the free ends of the bifunctional PEG molecules. In this way the PEG molecules act as convenient spacers that allow for the sorting of nanoparticles with a discrete number of functional groups.

TL;DR: Two families of entropy measures for IFSs are proposed and the axiom definition and properties are constructed and the results show that the proposed entropy measures seem to be more reliable for presenting the degree of fuzziness of an IFS.
Abstract: In this article we exploit the concept of probability for defining the fuzzy entropy of intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs). We then propose two families of entropy measures for IFSs and also construct the axiom definition and properties. Two definitions of entropy for IFSs proposed by Burillo and Bustince in 1996 and Szmidt and Kacprzyk in 2001 are used. The first one allows us to measure the degree of intuitionism of an IFS, whereas the second one is a nonprobabilistic-type entropy measure with a geometric interpretation of IFSs used in comparison with our proposed entropy of IFSs in the numerical comparisons. The results show that the proposed entropy measures seem to be more reliable for presenting the degree of fuzziness of an IFS. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Int Syst 21: 443–451, 2006.

TL;DR: In this paper, a fuzzy multiobjective problem is formulated to determine the feeder configuration of a distribution system, taking both the normal condition and the contingencies (faults) into account, and the switch statuses are considered as preventive controls for multiple individual balanced faults.
Abstract: Determination of feeder configuration involving the switch statuses is important for the operation in the distribution system. Minimization of the megawatt loss is crucial if the system is in a normal condition; the voltage drop is expected to be as low as possible while a fault occurs in the system. This paper presents a method based on genetic algorithms (GAs) to determine the network configuration. The proposed method, formulated as a fuzzy multiobjective problem, takes both the normal condition and the contingencies (faults) into account. The switch statuses are considered as preventive controls for multiple individual balanced faults. A vertex encoding based on the Prufer number is used in GA for encoding the chromosomes (strings). The Prufer number ensures that the system structure will be radial for the distribution system. The simulation results from two distribution systems are used to show the applicability of the proposed method.

TL;DR: In this article, polyamides having various amounts of maleimide and furan pendent groups, respectively, as well as their cross-linked polymers (PA-MI/PA-F) were prepared.
Abstract: Polyamides having various amounts of maleimide (PA-MI) and furan (PA-F) pendent groups, respectively, as well as their cross-linked polymers (PA-MI/PA-F) were prepared. PA-MI/PA-F cross-linked polymers showed thermally reversible cross-linking behavior via Diels-Alder (DA) and retro-DA reactions. Cross-linked PA-MI/PA-F films exhibited enhanced toughness and mechanical properties compared to PA-MI and PA-F precursors. Moreover, PA-MI/PA-F films also showed thermal self-repairing behavior, which was observed in the micrographs and instron tests.

TL;DR: In this paper, the performance and stability of an antifouling surface with grafted zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) was demonstrated with a surface plasmon resonance sensor.
Abstract: An ideal nonbiofouling surface for biomedical applications requires both high-efficient antifouling characteristics in relation to biological components and long-term material stability from biological systems. In this study we demonstrate the performance and stability of an antifouling surface with grafted zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA). The SBMA was grafted from a bromide-covered gold surface via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization to form well-packed polymer brushes. Plasma protein adsorption on poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) grafted surfaces was measured with a surface plasmon resonance sensor. It is revealed that an excellent stable nonbiofouling surface with grafted polySBMA can be performed with a cycling test of the adsorption of three model proteins in a wide range of various salt types, buffer compositions, solution pH levels, and temperatures. This work also demonstrates the adsorption of plasma proteins and the adhesion of platelets from human blood plasma on the polySBMA grafted surface. It was found that the polySBMA grafted surface effectively reduces the plasma protein adsorption from platelet-poor plasma solution to a level superior to that of adsorption on a surface terminated with tetra(ethylene glycol). The adhesion and activation of platelets from platelet-rich plasma solution were not observed on the polySBMA grafted surface. This work further concludes that a surface with good hemocompatibility can be achieved by the well-packed surface-grafted polySBMA brushes.
