Abstract: This is the first detailed explanation of the way British Sign Language works and is the product of many years' experience of research and teaching sign linguistics to deaf and hearing people. It assumes no previous knowledge of linguistics or sign language, and is not structured around traditional headings such as phonology, morphology and syntax. Instead it is set out in such a way as to help learners and their teachers understand the linguistic principles behind the language. There are sections on BSL grammar and also on the use of BSL, including social acceptability in signing, variation, and poetry and humour in BSL. Technical terms and linguistic jargon are kept to a minimum, and the text contains many examples from English, BSL, and other spoken and sign languages. The book is amply illustrated and contains exercises, as well as a reading list for further study.An accompanying 90-minute DVD is available from Talk With Sign Books. Abstract: In this article, we introduce Applicative functors – an abstract characterisation of an applicative style of effectful programming, weaker than Monads and hence more widespread. Indeed, it is the ubiquity of this programming pattern that drew us to the abstraction. We retrace our steps in this article, introducing the applicative pattern by diverse examples, then abstracting it to define the Applicative type class and introducing a bracket notation that interprets the normal application syntax in the idiom of an Applicative functor. Furthermore, we develop the properties of applicative functors and the generic operations they support. We close by identifying the categorical structure of applicative functors and examining their relationship both with Monads and with Arrow.

Abstract: Corriger les images de la distorsion des chambres de prises de vues a ete une preoccupation importante des usagers, aussi longtemps qu'ils ont voulu utiliser ou reconstituer fidelement les informations observees. La cartographie a ete initialement la principale application. Tandis que cette tâche se poursuit de nos jours, d'autres applications necessitent egalement un etalonnage precis des chambres, telles que les determinations tridimensionnelles a courte distance et de nombreuses autres mesures a deux dimensions. Dans le passe, les chambres utilisees etaient peu nombreuses et tres onereuses tandis qu'aujourdhui une grande societe industrielle aura normalement de nombreuses cameras bon marche qu'il utilisera pour des travaux de mesures tres importants. On se sert de nos jours de cameras beaucoup plus qu'on ne le fit jamais, mais l'âge d'or de l'etalonnage des chambres de prises de vues aeriennes pour la cartographie est desormais termine. On examine dans cet article quelques uns des essais et des developpements-cles et on les remet en perspective. On y met en particulier en evidence les forces sous-jacentes qui ont preside a chaque amelioration.

Abstract: Visual analytics aims to combine the strengths of human and electronic data processing. Visualisation, whereby humans and computers cooperate through graphics, is the means through which this is achieved. Seamless and sophisticated synergies are required for analysing spatio-temporal data and solving spatio-temporal problems. In modern society, spatio-temporal analysis is not solely the business of professional analysts. Many citizens need or would be interested in undertaking analysis of information in time and space. Researchers should find approaches to deal with the complexities of the current data and problems and find ways to make analytical tools accessible and usable for the broad community of potential users to support spatio-temporal thinking and contribute to solving a large range of problems.
