Abstract: The objective of this study is to evaluate the rheological properties and chemical bonding of nano-modified asphalt binders blended with nanosilica In this study, the nanosilica was added to the control asphalt at contents of 4% and 6% based on the weight of asphalt binders Superpave binder and mixture tests were utilized in this study to estimate the characteristics of the nano-modifed asphalt binder and mixture The rotational viscosity (RV), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rhometer (BBR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), asphalt pavement analyzer (APA), dynamic modulus (DM) and flow number (FN) tests were used to analyze rheological properties and chemical bonding changes of the nano-modified asphalt binder and the performance of the nano-modified asphalt mixture In addition, the performance of nano-modified asphalt after rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) short-term and pressure-aging vessel (PAV) long-term aging was assessed as well

Abstract: The problem of oxygen starvation in fuel cells coupled with air compressor saturation limits, is addressed in this paper. We propose using a hybrid configuration, in which a bank of ultracapacitors supplements the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell during fast current transients. Our objective is to avoid fuel cell oxygen starvation, prevent air compressor surge and choke, and simultaneously match an arbitrary level of current demand. We formulate the distribution of current demand between the fuel cell and the bank of ultracapacitors in a model predictive control framework, which can handle multiple constraints of the hybrid system. Simulation results show that reactant deficit during sudden increase in stack current is reduced from 50% in stand-alone architecture to less than 1% in the hybrid configuration. In addition, the explicit constraint handling capability of the current management scheme prevents compressor surge and choke and maintains the state-of-charge of the ultracapacitor within feasible bounds

Abstract: The Afrotropical mosquito Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto, a major vector of malaria, is currently undergoing speciation into the M and S molecular forms. These forms have diverged in larval ecology and reproductive behavior through unknown genetic mechanisms, despite considerable levels of hybridization. Previous genome-wide scans using gene-based microarrays uncovered divergence between M and S that was largely confined to gene-poor pericentromeric regions, prompting a speciation-with-ongoing-gene-flow model that implicated only about 3% of the genome near centromeres in the speciation process. Here, based on the complete M and S genome sequences, we report widespread and heterogeneous genomic divergence inconsistent with appreciable levels of interform gene flow, suggesting a more advanced speciation process and greater challenges to identify genes critical to initiating that process.

Abstract: Although abundant advice is available for how to develop and validate multi-item scales based on reflective constructs, scant attention has been directed to how to construct and validate formative constructs. Such advice is important because (1) theory suggests many constructs are formative and (2) recent advances in software render testing models with formative constructs more tractable. In this tutorial, our goal is to enhance understanding of formative constructs at the conceptual, statistical and methodological levels. Specifically, we (1) provide general principles for specifying whether a construct should be conceptually modeled as reflective or formative, (2) discuss the statistical logic behind formative constructs, and (3) illustrate how to model and evaluate formative constructs. In particular, we provide a tutorial in which we test and validate professional reward structure, a formative construct, in two popular structural equation modeling programs: EQS and PLS. We conclude with a summary of guidelines for how to conduct and evaluate research using formative constructs.
