Abstract: Metal and metal sulfide nanoparticles are prepared using a method that is based on the rapid expansion of supercritical fluid solution (RESS) into a liquid solution and characterized using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. The nanoparticles form solution-like stable suspensions in the presence of a stabilization agent such as poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) polymer. The stable suspensions allow systematic nonlinear optical measurements. The nanocrystalline silver metal and silver sulfide particles in PVP polymer-stabilized ethanol suspensions of high linear transmittance exhibit excellent optical limiting properties, with the optical limiting responses toward nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm being much stronger than those of benchmark materials [60]fullerene and chloroaluminum phthalocyanine in solution. A comparison of the results with those of stable suspensions of other nanoparticles including cadmium sulfide, lead sulfide, and nickel suggests that the optical limiting ...

01 Jan 2010TL;DR: Aldrich et al. as discussed by the authors studied the formation of independent for-profit businesses for insights into the nature of organization formation, in general, realizing that other kinds of organizations, such as voluntary organizations, non-profit organizations, and governmental organizations may be founded in different ways.
Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to offer some ideas and evidence about the processes of organization formation. We look at the founding of independent for-profit businesses for insights into the nature of organization formation, in general, realizing that other kinds of organizations, such as voluntary organizations, non-profit organizations, and governmental organizations, may be founded in different ways (Aldrich & Reuf, 2006; Gartner, 1993; Gartner & Gatewood, 1993; Scott, 1997). The focus of research on entrepreneurial behavior is about exploring “how” various activities undertaken by individuals emerge into organizations. Entrepreneurial behavior is a type of organizational behavior (Bird, 1989). Entrepreneurial behavior involves the activities of individuals who are associated with creating new organizations rather than the activities of individuals who are involved with maintaining or changing the operations of on-going established organizations (Gartner et al., 1992; Gartner & Starr, 1993). This chapter does not attempt to investigate the factors and causes that might lead to the initiation of organization formation activities. Discussions of theory and evidence about “why” organizations are likely to be formed have been addressed by a number of scholars (Aldrich & Reuf, 2006; Kirchhoff, 1994; Reynolds, 1992; Reynolds & White, 1997; Reynolds et al., 2000; Schoonhoven & Romanelli, 2001; Storey, 1994), and were also the subject of two special issues of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice (1992, 1993).

TL;DR: In this paper, high-speed cyclic voltammetry was used to measure rates for ferrocene oxidation/reduction in a series of self-assembled monolayers formed by coadsorption of N-(mercaptoalkyl)ferrocenecarboxamide ((C5H5)Fe(C 5H4)CONH(CH2)nSH where n = 7−10, and 15) with mercapto alcohol (HO(CH 2)n+1SH) on gold.
Abstract: High-speed cyclic voltammetry was used to measure rates for ferrocene oxidation/reduction in a series of self-assembled monolayers formed by coadsorption of N-(mercaptoalkyl)ferrocenecarboxamide ((C5H5)Fe(C5H4)CONH(CH2)nSH where n = 7−10, and 15) with mercapto alcohol (HO(CH2)n+1SH where n = 7−10, and 15) on gold. Standard electron-transfer rate constants were obtained as a function of chain length and from these rate constants, a β value (describing the exponential decay of rate with adsorbate chain length) of 1.1 methylene-1 or 0.85 A-1 was obtained. The rate data were also used to estimate coupling factors, |VAB|, describing the long-range electronic coupling between the immobilized ferrocene groups and the underlying gold electrode. Electronic coupling factors varied from a low of 0.06 cm-1 for the long-chain monolayer (18 bonds in the pathway linking ferrocene to the electrode) to a high of 6.5 cm-1 for the short-chain monolayer (10 bonds linking ferrocene to the electrode). The latter value is in go...

TL;DR: A learning-based feedforward term is developed to solve a general control problem in the presence of unknown nonlinear dynamics with a known period and is utilized to achieve global asymptotic link position tracking for a robot manipulator.
Abstract: In this paper, a learning-based feedforward term is developed to solve a general control problem in the presence of unknown nonlinear dynamics with a known period. Since the learning-based feedforward term is generated from a straightforward Lyapunov-like stability analysis, the control designer can utilize other Lyapunov-based design techniques to develop hybrid control schemes that utilize learning-based feedforward terms to compensate for periodic dynamics and other Lyapunov-based approaches (e.g., adaptive-based feedforward terms) to compensate for nonperiodic dynamics. To illustrate this point, a hybrid adaptive/learning control scheme is utilized to achieve global asymptotic link position tracking for a robot manipulator.

TL;DR: In this article, the stiffness and damping properties of carbon nanotube-epoxy composites are examined for use in structural vibration applications, and it is observed that enhancement in damping ratio is more dominant than enhancement in stiffness by using carbon Nanotube reinforcement.
