Identifying the Specific Nanostructures Responsible for the High Thermoelectric Performance of (Bi,Sb)2Te3 Nanocomposites

Abstract: Herein, we report the synthesis of multiscale nanostructured p-type (Bi,Sb)2Te3 bulk materials by melt-spinning single elements of Bi, Sb, and Te followed by a spark plasma sintering process. The samples that were most optimized with the resulting composition (Bi0.48Sb1.52Te3) and specific nanostructures showed an increase of ∼50% or more in the figure of merit, ZT, over that of the commercial bulk material between 280 and 475 K, making it suitable for commercial applications related to both power generation and refrigeration. The results of high-resolution electron microscopy and small angle and inelastic neutron scattering along with corresponding thermoelectric property measurements corroborate that the 10−20 nm nanocrystalline domains with coherent boundaries are the key constituent that accounts for the resulting exceptionally low lattice thermal conductivity and significant improvement of ZT.

Cell and organ printing 1: Protein and cell printers

Abstract: We have developed several devices for positioning organic molecules, molecular aggregates, cells, and single-cell organisms onto solid supports. These printers can create stable, functional protein arrays using an inexpensive technology. The cell printer allows us to create cell libraries as well as cellular assemblies that mimic their respective position in organs. The printers are derived from commercially available ink-jet printers that are modified to dispense protein or cell solutions instead of ink. We describe here the modifications to the print heads, and the printer hardware and software that enabled us to adapt the ink-jet printers for the manufacture of cell and protein arrays. The printers have the advantage of being fully automated and computer controlled, and allow for the high-throughput manufacture of protein and cell arrays.

FEAR: A software package for frontier efficiency analysis with R

Abstract: This paper describes a software package for computing non-parametric efficiency estimates, making inference, and testing hypotheses in frontier models. Commands are provided for bootstrapping as well as computation of some new, robust estimators of efficiency, etc.
