TL;DR: It is concluded that life support therapy should be initiated in patients with haematological disorders and that prolonged mechanical ventilation is compatible with long term survival, however, the combination of mechanical ventilation and haemodialysis is always associated with a poor prognosis and therefore the use of both techniques simultaneously for one patient is questionable.
Abstract: The course of 260 adults with haematological malignancies admitted to a medical intensive care unit was studied to evaluate the value of life support techniques and to research predictive factors. The overall in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) and hospital mortality rates were respectively 43% (113 patients) and 57% (148 patients). Among survivors, 64% (49 patients) were still alive after 6 months and 44% (35 patients) after 1 year. Among 34 haemodialysed patients, the MICU mortality was 67% (23 patients) and among 111 mechanically ventilated patients 85% (94 patients). Prolonged mechanical ventilation, more than seven days, was performed in 11 of the 17 survivors and did not influence long term survival. No individual predictor of mortality was found comparing survivors and non-survivors. However, SAPS, intractable sepsis and failure of more than one organ system were significantly different in non-survivors (p<0.001). Among the 20 patients requiring both mechanical ventilation and haemodialysis, only two left the MICU and both died soon thereafter. We conclude that life support therapy should be initiated in patients with haematological disorders and that prolonged mechanical ventilation is compatible with long term survival. However, the combination of mechanical ventilation and haemodialysis is always associated with a poor prognosis and therefore the use of both techniques simultaneously for one patient is questionable.

TL;DR: In this paper, a microstrip antenna with large bandwidth was developed using a parasitic technique, which gave a less distorted radiation pattern with frequency and achieved an impedance bandwidth eight times that of a conventional patch antenna of the same size.
Abstract: A microstrip antenna with large bandwidth is developed using a parasitic technique. Compared to the available wideband antennas, the proposed antenna structure is very compact and gives a less distorted radiation pattern with frequency. An impedance bandwidth eight times that of a conventional patch antenna of the same size is achieved. The concept of coupled microstrip line model is extended for theoretical interpretation of the impedance loci. The experimental procedure and results are described, and a theoretical analysis is presented. >

TL;DR: Replacement of teicoplanin with vancomycin led to full recovery of both patients and their discharge from hospital, highlighting the importance of clinical and microbiological monitoring of patients with staphylococcal septicemia, even when glycopeptides are used for treatment.
Abstract: A report is given on two neutropenic patients with staphylococcal septicemia caused byStaphylococcus haemolyticus andStaphylococcus aureus (both strains methicillin-resistant) who failed to respond to therapy with teicoplanin. Both strains were resistant to teicoplanin (MIC 16 and 8 mg/l respectively), but remained sensitive to vancomycin (MIC 2 and 4 mg/l respectively). Replacement of teicoplanin with vancomycin led to full recovery of both patients and their discharge from hospital. These two cases emphasize the importance of clinical and microbiological monitoring of patients with staphylococcal septicemia, even when glycopeptides are used for treatment.

TL;DR: It is indicated that in the former species because the concentration range of Cu 2+ was far below the lethal dose, or because of the low uptake rate of copper in high salinity, Cu 2- ions might not have entered the system in sufficient quantity to cause cell mortality and/or to induce the involvement of hemocytes in the transportation ofCu 2+ ions to sites of storage and excretion.

TL;DR: In this article, the formation of crystalline, monophasic indium selenide (InSe) thin solid films by elemental evaporation on hot glass substrates (400 to 530 K) is reported.
Abstract: Formation of crystalline, monophasic indium selenide (InSe) thin solid films by elemental evaporation on hot glass substrates (400 to 530 K) is reported. The compound formation as well as the composition of the formed films are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The crystallinity of the rhombohedral InSe films can be improved by post-depositional annealing for t < 30 min at 533 K. The InSe thin films become Se-deficient at higher temperatures of deposition or longer duration of annealing. Optical studies reveal the bandgap to be around 1.29 eV. Under optimum conditions of preparations the lowest resistivity of ≈ 12.8 Ω cm is obtained.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the diatom N. palea and A. coffeaeformis can tolerate high F concentration.
Abstract: Algal bioassay studies on the effect of F concentrations on diatoms Nitzschia palea (freshwater) and Amphora coffeaeformis (brackishwater) were conducted in the laboratory. Significant enhancement of growth occurred in N. palea at F concentrations between 10 and 110 mg L−1. In A. coffeaeformis statistically significant stimulation occurred at 70 mg L−1 F and above 90 mg L−1 F the growth declined. The results indicate that the diatom N. palea and A. coffeaeformis can tolerate high F concentration.

TL;DR: A set of consistent geophysical data show the presence of cold material at depth, east of the mountain chain, in the Arakan-Yoma fold belt region.
Abstract: A set of consistent geophysical data show the presence of cold material at depth, east of the mountain chain, in the Arakan-Yoma fold belt region. There are intermediate focus earthquakes to a depth of 150 km or so and longitudinal seismic waves are faster under the chain than west of it. The pronounced gravity low, east of the chain, is well explained by cold high density material at depth in the seismic area, compensated by crustal thickening under the mountain chain and a sediment filled depression under the eastern basin. The gravity low flanking other collisional chains might also be due to compensation of cold material at depth rather than the usually invoked flexural effect.

TL;DR: In this paper, low power optical phase conjugation (OPC) in three saturable dyes (eosin, erythrosin B, and rose bengal) embedded in two polymer films, viz., gelatin and polyvinyl alcohol, is presented.
Abstract: Studies on low power optical phase conjugation (OPC) in three saturable dyes, viz., eosin, erythrosin B, and rose bengal, embedded in two polymer films, viz., gelatin and polyvinyl alcohol, are presented. Experiments are performed using the 514.5 nm line of an argon-ion laser. Saturation intensities are determined from the transmission versus intensity plots, and triplet lifetimes are estimated from the phosphorescence decay curves. OPC experiments are performed, and the variation of OPC reflectivity with intensity and absorption length is studied. Experimental results are compared with the theory of degenerate four-wave mixing in absorbing media proposed by R. L. Abrams and R. C. Lind [Opt. Lett. 2(4), 94 (1 978)]. There is fair agreement between the theory and the experimental observations. The limitations in using these films for cw OPC applications are briefly discussed.

TL;DR: The thyrotropin‐releasing hormone test was performed in 100 depressed patients, including 73 patients with a major depressive episode according to DSM‐III, and the value of the TRH test in the choice of antidepressant treatment according to the monoaminergic action was not convincing.
Abstract: The thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) test was performed in 100 depressed patients, including 73 patients with a major depressive episode (MDE) according to DSM-III. Thirty-one patients subsequently received an antidepressant with a predominant serotoninergic action (indalpine or citalopram), and 27 patients received a noradrenergic antidepressant (maprotiline). The diagnostic value of the TRH test was not conclusive for any of the subgroups of depressed patients: MDE, MDE with melancholia or MDE in bipolar patients. Similarly, the value of the TRH test in the choice of antidepressant treatment according to the monoaminergic action was not convincing. These results are discussed in the light of the data of the international literature.

TL;DR: In this article, a survey of protein content in tropical estuary and its nearshore regions was reported for two seasons (postmonsoon (November 1987) and monsoon (June 1988) using a modified dye binding method.
Abstract: A survey of the protein content in a tropical estuary and its nearshore regions are reported for two seasons—postmonsoon (November 1987) and monsoon (June 1988)—using a modified dye binding method. The content of protein varied from 0.05 to 8.0μgl‐1 in the fresh and estuarine waters with little variability between surface and bottom values. The enhanced biological production during postmonsoon months causes a higher level of protein in the lower estuary compared to low values in the freshwater, riverine end. Increased terrestrial runoff and discharge of industrial waste mainly from seafood processing units are linked to the higher concentrations of protein in monsoon, more than double the content during postmonsoon. Auxiliary data on chlorophylla, organic NO3 ‐—N, PO3 4—P, urea and dissolved organic carbon support the above contention. Interparametric relationships suggest seasonally varying correlation between protein and chlorophylla, urea and DOC, signifying the role of biological control.

Abstract: Experimental method for measuring photoacoustic(PA) signals generated by a pulsed laser beam in liquids is described. The pulsed PA technique is found to be a convenient and accurate method for determination of quantum yield in fluorescent dye solutions. Concentration dependence of quantum yield of rhodamine 6G in water is studied using the above method. The results indicate that the quantum yield decreases with increase in concentration in the quenching region in agreement with the existing reports based on radiometric measurements.

TL;DR: The rate of accumulation was found to be the maximum in gills followed by viscera, mantle and muscle + foot, and mercury loss from the external tissues like gills and mantle was faster than from the internal tissues like viscersa and muscle.
Abstract: Accumulation, distribution and depuration of inorganic mercury in the gills, viscera, mantle and adductor muscle + foot of green musselPerna viridis were investigated. Mussels were exposed to 37–5 and 75 µg 1−1 mercury as HgCl2 in a static system for 4 days. The rate of accumulation was found to be the maximum in gills followed by viscera, mantle and muscle + foot. Exposed mussels were then transferred to clean seawater in a flow-through system and maintained for 25 days to study the depuration and biological halflives (TB/2) of mercury in the different body parts. After 25 days, mercury loss from the external tissues like gills and mantle was faster than from the internal tissues like viscera and muscle. Gills and mantle showed comparatively shorter TB/2 than the viscera and muscle + foot.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for RCS reduction of metallic cylinders using periodic strip grating techniques is presented, and the RCS of a cylinder with a periodic strip-loaded dielectric surface (SLDS) is determined experimentally and is compared with a reference target having the same dimensions.
Abstract: A method for RCS (radar-cross-section) reduction of metallic cylinders using periodic strip grating techniques is presented. The RCS of a cylinder with a periodic strip-loaded dielectric surface (SLDS) is determined experimentally and is compared with a reference target having the same dimensions. A typical reduction of 30-40 dB is obtained. It is concluded from the experimental results presented that proper implementation of an SLDS over a metallic cylinder would reduce its RCS. Another important advantage of this technique is the possibility of reducing the specularly reflected power for different angles in bistatic RCS measurements. >
