Abstract: Rates of encounters between humans and wildlife are increasing in cities around the world, especially when wildlife overlap with people in time, space and resources. Coyotes (Canis latrans) can make use of anthropogenic resources and reported rates of conflict have increased in cities across North America. This increase may be linked to individual differences in the use of human food and developed areas. We compared the relationships between coyote age, sex or health and the use of anthropogenic resources, which we defined as using developed areas over large home ranges, being active during the day, and consuming anthropogenic food. To do so, we applied GPS collars to 19 coyotes and sampled hair for stable isotope analysis. Eleven coyotes appeared to be healthy and eight were visibly infested with sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei), a mite that causes hair loss. Diseased coyotes used more developed areas, had larger monthly home ranges, were more active during the day, and assimilated less protein than coyotes that appeared to be healthy. We speculate that anthropogenic food provides a low-quality but easily accessible food source for diseased coyotes, which in turn may increase reliance on it and other anthropogenic resources to promote encounters with people.

Abstract: Systematic reviews of clinical trials aim to include all relevant studies conducted on a particular topic and to provide an unbiased summary of their results, producing the best evidence about the benefits and harms of medical treatments. Relevant studies, however, may not provide the results for all measured outcomes or may selectively report only some of the analyses undertaken, leading to unnecessary waste in the production and reporting of research, and potentially biasing the conclusions to systematic reviews. In this article, Kirkham and colleagues provide a methodological approach, with an example of how to identify missing outcome data and how to assess and adjust for outcome reporting bias in systematic reviews.

Abstract: Background The impact of gr/gr deletions on male fertility is unclear. These partial deletions of the AZFc region of the Y chromosome have been detected more frequently in infertile patients. However, few individual studies have demonstrated a statistically significant association. This study aims to quantify the strength of association between gr/gr deletions and male infertility, and to explore potential sources of heterogeneity, including ethnicity and geographical location. Methods Medline was searched up to 31 December 2009 for full articles investigating the prevalence of gr/gr deletions in infertile and control men. A pooled odds ratio (OR) was estimated by a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed by the Cochran's Q test, and quantified by I(2) statistic. Results A total of 18 case-control studies, including 6388 cases and 6011 controls, met our inclusion criteria and showed that gr/gr deletions were present in 6.86% of cases and 4.69% of controls. The association between gr/gr deletions and infertility was significant (P Conclusions Our meta-analysis comprising >12 000 men demonstrates that gr/gr deletions occur more frequently in infertile than control men.
